Daily Box Office Report
Monday, August 21, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Lionsgate’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard took in $1.954 M on Monday to lead the daily box office for a fourth straight day. The Hitman’s Bodyguard declined 64.1 percent from Sunday’s performance. Daily midweek business in general displayed notable slowing on Monday due in part to the summer movie season now approaching its end. The Hitman’s Bodyguard continues to exceed expectations with a four-day start of $23.338 M. That is 44.2 percent stronger than the $16.187 M four-day launch of War Dogs at this time last August.

Warner’s Annabelle: Creation placed in second with $1.627 M. Annabelle: Creation was down 61.7 percent from Sunday, and down a sharp, but understandable 55.1 percent from last Monday. Annabelle: Creation also continues to exceed expectations with a strong eleven-day gross of $65.784 M. That places Annabelle: Creation 4.1 percent ahead of the $63.223 M eleven-day take of 2014’s Annabelle.

Bleecker Street and Fingerprint Releasing’s Logan Lucky claimed third place with $664 K. Logan Lucky was down 63.4 percent from Sunday and had a very slim lead of $8,534 over Dunkirk for the day. Logan Lucky has grossed a softer than expected $8.264 M in its first four days. The film is running 17.7 percent behind the $10.040 M four-day start of 2013’s Side Effects.

Warner’s Dunkirk grossed $655 K to take fourth place. Dunkirk decreased 62.4 percent from Sunday and a sizable 49.6 percent from last Monday. Dunkirk has grossed $166.078 M in 32 days, which gives the film a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 3.29 to 1. Dunkirk is running 4.4 percent ahead of the $159.096 M grossed by 2014’s Interstellar after 32 days of wide release.

Open Road’s The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature rounded out Monday’s top five with $524 K. The Nut Job 2 declined 61.0 percent from Sunday and a respectable 44.4 percent from last Monday. The Nut Job 2 has grossed a softer than expected $18.200 M in eleven days, which places the film a lackluster 55.3 percent behind the $40.672 M eleven-day take of 2014’s The Nut Job.
