Daily Box Office Report
Tuesday, August 1, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Warner’s Dunkirk grossed $4.472 M on Tuesday to remain in first place at the daily box office. Dunkirk has now led the daily box office for eleven of the past twelve days. Dunkirk was up a healthy 34.5 percent over Monday and down a solid 39.4 percent from last Tuesday. The twelve-day total for Dunkirk stands at $109.114 M. Dunkirk is running 7.2 percent ahead of the $101.757 M grossed by 2014’s Interstellar after twelve days of wide release and 29.6 percent behind the $155.017 M twelve-day take of 2010’s Inception.

Sony’s The Emoji Movie held steady in a close second with $4.157 M. The Emoji Movie increased a strong 46.7 percent over Monday’s performance. The Emoji Movie continues to perform in line with expectations (and remain largely critic proof) with a solid five-day start of $31.522 M. That places The Emoji Movie 3.1 percent ahead of the $30.580 M five-day haul of 2015’s Pixels and 27.9 percent behind the $43.721 M five-day launch of last year’s The Angry Birds Movie.

Universal’s Girls Trip continued to claim third place with $2.846 M. Girls Trip was up 34.2 percent over Monday and down just 35.9 percent from last Tuesday. Girls Trip continues to pad its status as the break-out comedy hit of the summer with a stronger than expected twelve-day gross of $70.052 M. Girls Trip is running 26.3 percent ahead of the $55.461 M twelve-day take of last year’s Bad Moms and 11.1 percent ahead of the $63.066 M twelve-day gross of 2012’s Think Like a Man.

Focus’ Atomic Blonde was up 41.3 percent and one spot over Monday to move into fourth with $2.556 M. Atomic Blonde has grossed $22.651 M in five days, which is towards the lower end of expectations. The modestly budgeted Atomic Blonde is running 30.6 percent ahead of the $17.339 five-day start of 2014’s John Wick and 40.2 percent behind the $37.871 M five-day take of John Wick: Chapter Two earlier this year.

Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming was down one place from Monday to round out Tuesday’s top five with $2.475 M. Spider-Man: Homecoming trailed Atomic Blonde by just $81,090 for the day. Spider-Man: Homecoming increased 35.7 percent over Monday and decreased a solid 40.1 percent from last Tuesday. The 26-day total for Spider-Man: Homecoming stands at a healthy $282.466 M.

Fox’s War for the Planet of the Apes and Universal’s Despicable Me 3 placed in sixth and seventh with respective daily grosses of $1.775 M and $1.607 M. War for the Planet of the Apes was up 36.4 percent over Monday and down 46.6 percent from last Tuesday. Despicable Me 3 increased 51.8 percent from Monday and decreased 43.7 percent from last Tuesday. Respective total grosses stand at $232.959 M for Despicable Me 3 in 33 days and at $121.861 M for War for the Planet of the Apes in 19 days.
