Daily Box Office Report
Wednesday, May 31, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales led the daily box office for a sixth straight day on Wednesday with $4.251 M for the day. Dead Men Tell No Tales was down a sharp 37.9 percent from Tuesday, which represented the day’s largest daily percentage decline among wide releases. The film continues to perform in line with scaled back expectations with a six-day start of $89.574 M. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is running 17.9 percent behind the $109.054 M six-day take of 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and a slim 1.1 percent behind the $90.610 M six-day gross of last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a second weekend gross of $24.0 M for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales this weekend.

Paramount’s Baywatch grossed $1.647 M to remain in second place. Baywatch declined a sizable 35.0 percent from Tuesday's performance. Baywatch has grossed a softer than expected $31.894 M in its first seven days of release. The film is running 54.1 percent behind the $69.449 M seven-day start of 2013’s The Hangover Part III and 9.1 percent ahead of the $29.237 M seven-day take of last year’s Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a second weekend gross of $8.7 M for Baywatch this weekend.

Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 followed closely behind in third with $1.612 M. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailed Baywatch by a slim $34,987 for the day. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was down 27.3 percent from Tuesday and down a solid 36.4 percent from last Wednesday. With a 27-day gross of $344.335 M, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is running an impressive 34.1 percent ahead of the $256.735 M 27-day gross of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a fourth place take of $10.3 M for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 this weekend.

Fox’s Alien: Covenant held steady in fourth place with $954 K. Alien: Covenant declined 28.0 percent from Tuesday and a sharp 56.1 percent from last Wednesday, as the film remains very front-loaded. Alien: Covenant has grossed $62.483 M in thirteen days, which is below expectations and a disappointing 35.3 percent softer than the $96.624 M thirteen-day haul of 2012’s Prometheus.

Warner’s Everything, Everything and Fox’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul claimed fifth and sixth place with respective daily grosses of $602 K and $414 K. Respective thirteen-day grosses stand at a solid $24.450 M for Everything, Everything and at a lackluster $16.253 M for Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul.
