Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was off to an estimated $5.50 M start from Thursday night preview screenings that began at 7 PM. That was 17.0 percent stronger than the
$4.70 M preview gross of 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, though it should be noted that On Stranger Tides didn’t open until midnight. The preview gross for Dead Men Tell No Tales was
32.9 percent below the $8.2 M preview gross of last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse, but Dead Men Tell No Tales is likely to be significantly less front-loaded throughout Memorial Day weekend than X-Men: Apocalypse was.
As is normally the case, the Thursday night performance of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will be counted towards Friday’s opening day gross. |
Paramount’s Baywatch claimed first place on Thursday with an opening day take of $4.607 M. The film’s opening day performance included an estimated $1.25 M from Wednesday night preview screenings
that began at 7 PM. The opening day take for Baywatch was a disappointing 60.9 percent softer than the $11.789 M Thursday start of 2013’s The Hangover Part III. While Baywatch likely won’t be quite as
front-loaded over Memorial Day weekend as The Hangover Part III was, the comparison is obviously a poor sign for Baywatch this weekend. Critical and internet reception to Baywatch has been soft
(the film as a current LoveHate Rate of 4.487), though the film looks to be going over with audiences, as it received a solid B+ rating on CinemaScore. |
Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 took second place with $2.404 M. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was down 5.2 percent from Wednesday and down a solid 35.0 percent from last
Thursday. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 placed in a very close second for the week with a weekly take of $46.578 M. That was down 44.3 percent from the previous week and brings the film’s three-week total to
$313.316 M. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is running 33.8 percent ahead of the $234.254 M 21-day gross of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and 10.0 percent behind the $348.083 M 21-day take of 2013’s Iron Man 3. |
Fox’s Alien: Covenant followed in third with $1.780 M. Alien: Covenant was down a sharp 18.1 percent from Wednesday’s performance, as the film took a clear hit from
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Baywatch both entering the marketplace. Alien: Covenant was the week’s top film with a seven-day start of $46.822 M. The film is performing on the
low end of expectations and is running an underwhelming 31.8 percent behind the $68.658 M seven-day start of 2012’s Prometheus. |
Warner’s Everything, Everything rounded out its first week of release with a fourth place take of $855 K. Everything, Everything increased an encouraging 13.2 percent from Wednesday.
Everything, Everything took third place this week with a seven-day launch of $15.356 M. That is on the high of expectations and represents a healthy start given the film’s modest $10 M production budget. |
Fox’s Snatched and Warner’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword claimed fifth and sixth place with respective daily grosses of $601 K and $540 K. For the week, Snatched was down
55.9 percent to take fourth with $11.097 M and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword was down 49.4 percent to take fifth with $10.304 M. Respective two-week totals stand at $36.280 M for Snatched and at $30.655 M
for King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. |
