Fox’s Alien: Covenant was off to an estimated $4.20 M start on Thursday night from preview screenings that began at 7 PM. That was 5 percent stronger than the $4.00 M Thursday night start of
last year’s Independence Day: Resurgence and 13.5 percent stronger than the $3.70 M Thursday night preview gross of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. The preview gross for Alien: Covenant was also 17.9 percent
stronger than the $3.56 M preview gross of 2012’s Prometheus, though it should be noted that Prometheus didn’t open until midnight. As is normally the case, the Thursday night performance of Alien: Covenant
will be counted towards Friday’s performance. Alien: Covenant looks to be in good shape to finish in first place this weekend based on its Thursday night launch. |
Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 rounded out its second week of release with a $3.696 M take on Thursday. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 declined 6.9 percent from Wednesday and a
respectable 48.4 percent from last Thursday. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was the week’s top film with a weekly take of $83.580 M. That was down 54.4 percent from the film’s opening week performance and brings the
film’s two-week total to a strong $266.737 M. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is running 35.0 percent ahead of the $197.546 M 14-day take of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and 11.6 percent behind the $301.892 M
14-day gross of 2013’s Iron Man 3. |
Fox’s Snatched wrapped up its first week with a second place take of $1.070 M. Snatched declined a sizable 11.9 percent from Wednesday’s performance. The film placed in second for the
week with a seven-day start of $25.183 M. Snatched performed towards the higher end of expectations this week, though it did show early signs of front-loading during the midweek after Sunday’s strong Mother’s Day performance. |
Warner’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword held steady in third with $941 K. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword was down 10.7 percent from Wednesday. The film took third place for the week
with a seven-day start of just $20.351 M. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword performed below its already relatively modest expectations this week and was off to a poor start with its expensive price tag in mind. |
Universal’s The Fate of the Furious continued to occupy fourth place with $324 K. The Fate of the Furious declined 8.8 percent from Wednesday and 38.6 percent from last Thursday. The Fate of the Furious
finished in fourth this week with $6.976 M. That was down 37.3 percent from the previous week and brings the film’s five-week total to $216.710 M. |
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast rounded out Thursday’s unchanged top five with $271 K. Beauty and the Beast decreased 4.2 percent from Wednesday and just 28.6 percent from last Thursday.
Beauty and the Beast placed in fifth for the week with $6.048 M. The film was down just 9.5 percent from the previous frame and has grossed a massive $495.379 M through nine weeks. |
