Daily Box Office Report
Wednesday, May 10, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 took in $7.528 M on Wednesday to easily lead the daily box office for a sixth consecutive day. The film was down 37.8 percent from Tuesday’s performance. In comparison, 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy declined 26.0 percent on its first Wednesday to gross $8.808 M, while 2013’s Iron Man 3 was down 28.1 percent to take in $8.112 M. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has grossed $175.998 M in six days, which already makes the film the fourth highest grossing release of 2017 so far (behind only Beauty and the Beast, Logan and The Fate of the Furious). Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is running an impressive 38.8 percent ahead of the $126.759 M six-day start of Guardians of the Galaxy and 14.1 percent behind the $204.811 M six-day haul of Iron Man 3. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a strong second weekend take of $65.0 M for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 this weekend.

Universal’s The Fate of the Furious took in $569 K to remain in second place. The Fate of the Furious declined 33.3 percent from Tuesday and 51.3 percent from last Wednesday. The 27-day total for The Fate of the Furious stands at $209.207 M. That places the film 6.2 percent behind the $222.928 M 27-day take of 2013’s Fast & Furious 6. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a fourth place finish of $6.0 M for The Fate of the Furious this weekend.

Lionsgate and Pantelion’s How to Be a Latin Lover grossed $539 K to remain in third. How to Be a Latin Lover was down a slim 6.9 percent from Tuesday and down just 17.7 percent from last Wednesday. Mother’s Day is celebrated on May 10 in Mexico, which appears to have boosted the film’s domestic performance yesterday. With a healthy thirteen-day take of $22.059 M, How to Be a Latin Lover is running just ahead of the $21.918 M thirteen-day gross of 2013’s Instructions Not Included, but will soon fall behind the pace of that film.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast was up one spot from Tuesday to place in fourth on Wednesday with $377 K. Beauty and the Beast was down 24.3 percent from Tuesday and down only 20.6 percent from last Wednesday. The 55-day total for Beauty and the Beast stands at a massive $488.951 M. That leaves the film just $11.049 M away from reaching the $500 M domestic milestone.

STX Entertainment and EuropaCorp’s The Circle fell one spot from Tuesday to round out Wednesday’s top five with $346 K. The Circle declined 36.7 percent from Tuesday and a 36.7 percent from last Wednesday as well. The thirteen-day total for The Circle stands at a softer than expected $16.865 M.
