Daily Box Office Report
Tuesday, May 9, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continued to rule the box office on Tuesday with a first place take of $12.097 M. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was up a healthy 22.7 percent over Monday. In comparison, 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy increased 1.6 percent on its first Tuesday to gross $11.908 M, while 2013’s Iron Man 3 was up a slim 0.2 percent to gross $11.287 M. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has grossed $168.470 M in five days, which is in line with the film’s lofty expectations. The film is running an impressive 42.8 percent ahead of the $117.951 M five-day take of Guardians of the Galaxy and 14.4 percent behind the $196.699 M five-day start of Iron Man 3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is already the sixth highest grossing release of 2017 so far domestically and is set to move into fourth place for the year today.

Universal’s The Fate of the Furious held steady in second place with $852 K. That represented a 41.7 percent increase over Monday and a sizable 54.4 percent decrease from last Tuesday. The Fate of the Furious has grossed $208.639 M in 26 days, which currently ranks as the third highest total domestic gross among 2017 releases (behind only Beauty and the Beast and Logan). The Fate of the Furious is running 6.0 percent behind the $221.951 M 26-day take of 2013’s Fast & Furious 6.

Lionsgate and Pantelion’s How to Be a Latin Lover grossed $579 K to remain in third. How to Be a Latin Lover was up 47.6 percent over Monday and down 47.4 percent from last Tuesday. How to Be a Latin Lover has grossed $21.520 M through twelve days. How to Be a Latin Lover is running just ahead of the $21.458 M twelve-day take of 2013’s Instructions Not Included, but will soon fall behind the pace of that film.

STX Entertainment and EuropaCorp’s The Circle was up one spot from Monday to move into fourth place on Tuesday with $546 K. The Circle increased a very strong 71.4 percent from Monday, but still decreased 46.6 percent from last Tuesday. The twelve-day total for The Circle stands at a softer than expected $16.519 M.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast was down one spot to round out Tuesday’s top five with $499 K. Beauty and the Beast was up 48.2 percent over Monday and down just 28.8 percent from last Tuesday. The 54-day total for Beauty and the Beast stands at $488.574 M. That leaves the film just $11.426 M away from reaching the $500 M domestic milestone.
