Daily Box Office Report
Tuesday, April 11, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Fox and DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby took in $3.387 M on Tuesday to lead the daily box office for a fifth consecutive day. The Boss Baby was up a healthy 55.3 percent over Monday and down a slim 22.5 percent from last Tuesday. It should be noted that Tuesday percentage increases in general were especially strong yesterday. The Boss Baby has grossed a stronger than expected $95.005 M in twelve days, which leaves the film just $4.995 M away from reaching the $100 M domestic mark. The Boss Baby is running 31.3 percent ahead of the $72.316 M twelve-day take of last year’s Kung Fu Panda 3 and 8.8 percent behind the $104.135 M twelve-day total of 2005’s Home.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast held steady in second with $2.956 M. Beauty and the Beast increased 45.1 percent from Monday and decreased a very solid 35.3 percent from last Tuesday. Beauty and the Beast has grossed $435.939 M through 26 days of release. The film now stands in 14th place on the all-time unadjusted domestic chart, as yesterday it surpassed the $435.111 M lifetime domestic gross of 1982’s E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. In the coming days Beauty and the Beast will pass by the $441.226 M total gross of 2004’s Shrek 2 to move into 13th place on the all-time domestic list.

Warner’s Going in Style grossed $1.844 M to remain in third place. Going in Style was up an especially strong 76.9 percent over Monday’s performance, which represented the second straight impressive daily percentage hold for the film. Going in Style continues to outpace consensus expectations with a solid five-day start of $14.819 M. The film is running 11.1 percent ahead of the $13.341 M five-day gross of last year’s Dirty Grandpa and 24.5 percent behind the $19.619 M five-day take of 2013’s Last Vegas.

Sony’s Smurfs: The Lost Village took in $1.592 M to continue to claim fourth. Smurfs: The Lost Village also experienced a huge percentage jump on Tuesday, as it was up 69.9 percent over Monday. However, in the bigger picture Smurfs: The Lost Village is still off to a lackluster start with $15.740 M in its first five days. That is 41.9 percent softer than the $27.109 M five-day launch of 2013’s The Smurfs 2 (which opened on a Wednesday).

Paramount and DreamWorks’ Ghost in the Shell took fifth place with $1.050 M, while Lionsgate’s Saban’s Power Rangers followed in sixth with $869 K. Ghost in the Shell was up 45.0 percent over Monday and down 45.4 percent from last Tuesday. Power Rangers increased 50.4 percent over Monday and decreased 39.4 percent from last Tuesday. Respective total grosses stand at a disappointing $33.304 M in twelve days for Ghost in the Shell and at a solid $76.542 M in 19 days for Power Rangers.

Pure Flix’s The Case for Christ was up two spots and 56.1 percent over Monday to move into eighth place on Tuesday with $551 K. The Case for Christ has grossed $4.872 M in five days. That is in line with expectations and is 13.2 percent stronger than the $4.305 M five-day start of 2015’s Do You Believe? The Case for Christ is likely to hold up well throughout Holy Week, especially with the aid of strong word of mouth.
