| After finishing in a close second place this past weekend, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast returned to first place on Monday with $3.167 M. Beauty and the Beast declined 75.8 percent from
Sunday and a sizable 55.1 percent from last Monday (when the film was still playing on IMAX screens). It should be noted that the marketplace in general faced added competition on Monday from the NCAA Men’s Basketball
Championship Game. Beauty and the Beast has grossed a massive $396.505 M in in 18 days and in all likelihood will surpass the $400 M domestic mark today. The film is currently in 26th place on the all-time unadjusted
domestic box office chart. Beauty and the Beast is running 55.0 percent ahead of the $255.775 M 18-day gross of last year’s The Jungle Book and 29.3 percent ahead of the $306.594 M 18-day take of 2012’s
The Hunger Games. |
| Fox and DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby placed in a very close second with $3.083 M. The Boss Baby was down 78.7 percent from Sunday and trailed Beauty and the Beast by just
$84,569 for the day. The Boss Baby has grossed a stronger than expected $53.281 M though four days. In comparison to previous DreamWorks Animation films, The Boss Baby is running 8.6 percent ahead of the
$49.082 M four-day take of last year’s Trolls (which fell 82.2 percent on its first Monday to gross $2.501 M) and a slim 4.4 percent behind the $55.712 M four-day start of 2015’s Home
(which declined 75.2 percent on its first Monday to claim $3.604 M). |
| Paramount and DreamWorks’ Ghost in the Shell claimed third place with $1.324 M. Ghost in the Shell declined 69.4 percent from Sunday’s performance. The film has grossed $20.000 M in its first four days of release. Ghost in the Shell is performing poorly with its price tag in mind and below its already
scaled back expectations. Ghost in the Shell has started out very similarly to 2011’s Sucker Punch, which grossed $20.462 M in its first four days after declining 67.7 percent on its first Monday to take in $1.404 M. |
| Lionsgate’s Saban’s Power Rangers took fourth with $970 K. Power Rangers was down 76.1 percent from Sunday and down a very sharp 65.1 percent from last Monday. While it continues to
display early front-loading, Power Rangers has still grossed a solid $65.732 M through eleven days. That places the film 5.9 percent ahead of the $62.046 M eleven-day gross of last year’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. |
| Warner’s Kong: Skull Island rounded out Monday’s top five with $693 K. Kong: Skull Island decreased 71.6 percent from Sunday and a solid 45.4 percent from last Monday. Kong: Skull Island
has grossed $148.329 M in 25 days, which leaves the film just $1.671 M away from becoming the fifth release of 2017 to reach the $150 M domestic mark. |
| Meanwhile, Focus’ The Zookeeper’s Wife placed in tenth for the day with $288 K. The Zookeeper’s Wife had a healthy daily per-location average of $532, while currently playing in a
moderate 541 locations. The four-day start for The Zookeeper’s Wife stands at $3.577 M. |
