Disney’s Beauty and the Beast continued to rule the daily box office on Wednesday with $11.539 M. Beauty and the Beast was down a sharp, but understandable 35.5 percent from Tuesday’s
performance. It should be noted that Wednesday’s daily percentage declines were large in general coming off of Tuesday’s strong holds. In comparison, 2012’s The Hunger Games declined 22.2 percent on its first
Wednesday to gross $8.052 M, while last year’s The Jungle Book fell 34.7 percent on its first Wednesday to take in $5.851 M. |
Beauty and the Beast has grossed $217.700 M in six days. That represents the sixth largest six-day start of all-time (just ahead of the $215.169 M six-day haul of last year’s Captain America: Civil War).
Beauty and the Beast is currently running 19.8 percent ahead of the $181.759 M six-day take of The Hunger Games and an especially impressive 74.0 percent ahead of the $125.094 M six-day launch of
The Jungle Book. With its continued strength during the midweek in mind, BoxOfficeReport is predicting a second weekend gross of $93.0 M for Beauty and the Beast. That would rank as the fourth largest second weekend gross of all-time. |
Warner’s Kong: Skull Island held in a distant second place with $2.107 M. Kong: Skull Island was down a hefty 43.6 percent from Tuesday, but still down a reasonable 54.4 percent from
last Wednesday (when the film was still playing in IMAX locations). Kong: Skull Island has grossed a stronger than expected $117.196 M in thirteen days. That places the film 2.8 percent behind the $120.597 M
thirteen-day gross of 2005’s King Kong (which opened on a Wednesday). BoxOfficeReport is predicting a third weekend gross of $14.5 M for Kong: Skull Island. |
Fox’s Logan grossed $1.553 M to continue to claim third place. Logan was down a sharp 35.5 percent from Tuesday and down 50.9 percent from last Wednesday. Logan has grossed
$189.910 M in 20 days, which leaves the film just $10.090 M away from reaching the $200 M domestic milestone and places the film just 2.6 percent behind the $195.050 M 20-day gross of 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.
BoxOfficeReport is predicting Logan will gross $9.0 M this weekend. |
Universal’s Get Out held steady in fourth place with $1.235 M. Get Out declined 32.6 percent from Tuesday and a solid 44.1 percent from last Wednesday. Get Out has grossed a
very impressive $137.671 M in 27 days and has now surpassed the $137.034 M current total gross of fellow Universal break-out hit Split. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a gross of $8.8 M for Get Out this weekend. |
Lionsgate’s The Shack rounded out the unchanged daily top five on Wednesday with 657 K. The Shack experienced one of the day’s stronger daily holds among wide releases, as the film
was down 30.0 percent from Tuesday and down only 34.3 percent from last Wednesday. The Shack continues to exceed expectations with $44.669 M through 20 days of release. |
