Weekend Box Office Report
September 29 - October 1, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Weekend Actuals Update:

With actuals now in, Fox’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle ultimately took first place this weekend with $16.936 M. Warner’s IT finished in an extremely close second with $16.902 M, while Universal’s American Made debuted just behind in third with $16.776 M. A very slim $159 K separated third place from first place this weekend.

Other weekend actuals for the frame include: The LEGO Ninjago Movie ($11.644 M), Flatliners ($6.574 M), Battle of the Sexes ($3.417 M), American Assassin ($3.316 M), Home Again ($1.727 M), ‘Til Death Do Us Part ($1.522 M), mother! ($1.449 M), Victoria & Abdul ($1.092 M) and A Question of Faith ($1.025 M).

Weekend Estimates Update:

It was a close three-way battle for first place this weekend between Warner’s IT, Universal’s American Made and Fox’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle. IT currently has the slight edge for first based on today’s studio estimates. The three films are close enough that the final order of finish could still change tomorrow when actuals are released, though it should also be noted that IT has the largest estimated Sunday percentage decline of the three films.

Warner’s IT returned to first place this weekend with an estimated $17.31 M. IT has now led the weekend box office for three of the past four frames. IT stabilized very nicely this weekend, as the film was down a solid 41.8 percent from last weekend. IT continues to venture into uncharted waters for a horror film, as the film has grossed a massive $291.18 M through 24 days of release. That leaves IT just $8.82 M away from reaching the $300 M domestic milestone. With the aid of healthy word of mouth and the pre-Halloween season, IT is likely to hold up well throughout the month of October. Internationally, IT took in an estimated $35.6 M this weekend from 64 markets. That brings the film’s international total to $262.0 M and current global haul to $553.1 M.

Universal’s American Made debuted with an estimated $17.02 M. That was on the high end of expectations, which had tended to range from $13 M to $17 M heading into the weekend. American Made was helped out this weekend by strong critical reviews. The film has a current score of 7.829 on our LoveHate Rate aggregate measurement of critical and online user ratings. American Made also looks to be going over well with audiences, as the film received a solid B+ rating on CinemaScore. American Made debuted 25.7 percent below the $22.87 M start of last year’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, but going forward is likely to display stronger holding power than Jack Reacher: Never Go Back did. Having grossed $64.7 M to date internationally (where the film has been playing for several weeks), American Made has grossed $81.7 M so far globally.

Fox’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle took in an estimated $17.00 M in its second weekend. That represented a sharp 56.4 percent decline from last weekend’s debut. In comparison, last year’s Kingsman: The Secret Service decreased 49.3 percent in its second frame to take in $18.35 M. While it is running a bit below expectations, Kingsman: The Golden Circle has still grossed a solid $66.70 M in ten days. That places the film a slim 1.8 percent behind the $67.93 M ten-day gross of Kingsman: The Secret Service. Going forward, Kingsman: The Golden Circle is highly unlikely to hold up as well as Kingsman: The Secret Service did, especially with Warner’s anticipated Blade Runner 2049 entering the marketplace this coming Friday.

Warner’s The LEGO Ninjago Movie placed in fourth with an estimated $12.00 M. The LEGO Ninjago Movie was down a solid 41.3 percent from last weekend’s softer than expected start. The LEGO Ninjago Movie continues to run significantly below expectations with a ten-day haul of $35.56 M. That places The LEGO Ninjago Movie a discouraging 7.6 percent behind the $38.49 M ten-day start of last year’s Storks (which declined 36.8 percent in its second weekend to take in $13.48 M). On Friday, The LEGO Ninjago Movie will face new competition for family audiences with the release of Lionsgate’s My Little Pony: The Movie.

Sony’s Flatliners rounded out the weekend’s top five with an underwhelming estimated debut of $6.70 M. Flatliners opened just below its already modest expectations, which had tended to range from $7 M to $9 M. At the end of the day, there simply wasn’t much interest for a reboot of 1990’s Flatliners. Arriving in the marketplace only a few weeks after IT didn’t help matters for Flatliners either, nor did the film’s poor critical reviews (the film currently has a LoveHate Rate of just 3.245, which is one of the lower scores of 2017 to date). Flatliners does look to be going over better with its target audience, as the film received a B- rating on CinemaScore. With that said, Flatliners is likely to disappear quickly from theatres regardless. On the brighter side, the reported production budget for Flatliners was just $19 M.

On the heels of last weekend’s healthy platform start, Fox Searchlight’s Battle of the Sexes was unable to maintain momentum this weekend upon expanding into semi-wide release with an estimated sixth place take of $3.40 M. Battle of the Sexes performed below expectations and was only able to register a so-so per-location average of $2,803 from 1,213 locations. While Battle of the Sexes has received good critical reviews (the film has a current LoveHate Rate of 7.637), this weekend’s lackluster expansion will make it difficult for the film to display strong holding power going forward. The ten-day total for Battle of the Sexes stands at $4.07 M.
