3-Day Weekend Estimates Update: |
Lionsgate’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard took in an estimated $10.25 M over the three-day frame to lead the box office for a third consecutive weekend. The film was down a very slim 0.1 percent from
last weekend. The Hitman’s Bodyguard and holdovers in general were aided this weekend by the lack of new high profile wide releases entering the marketplace and by last weekend’s grosses having been deflated by both
Hurricane Harvey and the Mayweather vs. McGregor boxing match last Saturday. The Hitman’s Bodyguard passed the $50 M mark this weekend and continues to exceed expectations with a 17-day gross of $54.94 M. That is
7.3 percent ahead of the $51.18 M 17-day gross of 2014’s Let’s Be Cops (which opened on a Wednesday). The current four-day weekend studio estimate for The Hitman’s Bodyguard is $12.90 M. |
Warner’s Annabelle: Creation held steady in second place with an estimated $7.30 M over the three-day frame. Annabelle: Creation was down just 5.0 percent from last weekend.
Annabelle: Creation likely received an added boost this weekend from moviegoers who wanted to catch the film before Warner’s highly anticipated IT arrives in theatres this coming Friday. The 24-day total for
Annabelle: Creation stands at a stronger than expected $88.98 M. Annabelle: Creation has now zoomed past the $84.27 M final domestic gross of 2014’s Annabelle and is currently running 11.9 percent
ahead of the $79.50 M 24-day gross of Annabelle. Annabelle: Creation is headed for a four-day take in the neighborhood of $9.0 M. |
The Weinstein Company’s Wind River was up one spot and a strong 27.4 percent over last weekend to claim third place this weekend with an estimated three-day take of $5.86 M. Wind River
continued to benefit from strong reviews and strong word of mouth this weekend, in addition to expanding into an additional 507 locations. The 31-day total for Wind River stands at a promising $18.29 M, which places
the film just 7.1 percent behind the $19.69 M 31-day haul of last year’s Hell or High Water. The current four-day studio estimate for Wind River is $7.31 M. |
The Weinstein Company also claimed fourth place this weekend, as Leap! grossed an estimated $4.89 M over the three-day frame. Leap! increased 3.3 percent over last weekend’s debut,
which represented a very impressive hold, even with the holiday weekend in mind. Leap! has grossed a respectable $11.38 M through ten days of release, which is in line with the film’s modest expectations. With no
new family films entering the marketplace until Warner’s The LEGO Ninjago Movie does so on September 22, Leap! will hope to continue to hold up well over the next few weeks. The current four-day studio
estimate for Leap! is $6.65 M. |
Bleecker Street and Fingerprint Releasing’s Logan Lucky rounded out the weekend’s top five with an estimated three-day gross of $4.42 M. That represented a 4.2 percent increase over last
weekend. Logan Lucky has grossed $21.50 M through 17 days of release. While that is below expectations, Logan Lucky continues to display healthy holding power
(the film already has a total gross to opening weekend ratio of 2.83 to 1). Logan Lucky is running 14.3 percent behind the $25.10 M 17-day take of 2013’s Side Effects. The current four-day studio estimate
for Logan Lucky is $5.55 M. |
Warner’s Dunkirk followed closely behind in sixth place with an estimated $4.13 M over the three-day frame. Dunkirk was up 4.5 percent over last weekend, despite losing most of its
IMAX shows with the release of IMAX's Marvel’s Inhumans. The 45-Day total for Dunkirk stands at a strong $178.75 M. That places the film 4.2 percent ahead of the $171.54 M grossed by 2014’s
Interstellar after 45 days of wide release. Dunkirk is headed for a four-day gross in the area of $5.2 M. |
Sony’s Spider-Man Homecoming claimed seventh with an estimated three-day take of $3.65 M. Spider-Man: Homecoming was up a terrific 29.4 percent over last weekend.
Spider-Man: Homecoming has grossed a spectacular $324.05 M in 59 days, which ranks the film as the third highest grossing release of this summer
(behind only the $408.94 M take of Wonder Woman and the $389.64 M haul of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2). The current four-day studio estimate for Spider-Man: Homecoming is $4.70 M. |
Coming as no real surprise, the weekend’s four new moderate releases all failed to make an impact this weekend and were tightly bunched together with one another. Sony’s
Close Encounters of the Third Kind 40th Anniversary was the strongest of the group with respective estimated three-day and four-day grosses of $1.80 M and $2.30 M from 901 locations. The re-issue of
Close Encounters of the Third Kind was aided by playing in 445 PLF locations. |
The Weinstein Company’s long delayed Tulip Fever debuted softly with respective estimated three-day and four-day takes of $1.21 M and $1.51 M from 765 locations. |
IMAX’s Marvel’s Inhumans grossed an estimated $1.50 M over the four-day frame from 393 IMAX locations (unofficial three-day estimates for Inhumans range from $1.20 M - $1.25 M). |
Lionsgate and Pantelion’s Hazlo Como Hombre arrived with respective estimated three-day and four-day grosses of $1.13 M and $1.40 M from 382 locations. |
