Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Reaches $840M Global Total Through Thursday
Friday, January 3, 2020 (Morning Update)
Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker rounded out its second week of domestic release with an estimated $9.2 million on Thursday. That was down a sizable, but understandable 46.1 percent from Wednesday's New Year's Day performance and down a very sharp 69.9 percent from last Thursday's inflated Boxing Day performance. The 14-day total for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker stands at $417.0 million. The film is currently the sixth highest grossing release of 2019 domestically and this weekend the film will zoom past fellow Disney releases Captain Marvel and Toy Story 4 to move into fourth place domestically among 2019 releases. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is running 10.3 percent behind the $464.70 million 14-day take of 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi (which took in $19.49 million on its second Thursday).

Internationally, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker held up nicely on Thursday with an estimated $15.1 million. That brings the film's international total to $423.0 million and current global haul to $840.0 million. Estimated international totals by market for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker through Thursday include $61.1 million in the United Kingdom, $50.2 million in Germany, $40.5 million in Japan, $40.3 million in France, $24.9 million in Australia, $18.8 million in China, $16.8 million in Spain, $13.7 million in Mexico, $13.2 million in Italy, $10.6 million in Brazil, $9.5 million in Russia and $8.7 million in Sweden.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Passes $400M Domestically, $800M Globally on New Year's Day
Thursday, January 2, 2020 (Morning Update)
Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker took in an estimated $16.9 million on New Year's Day Wednesday to remain in first place at the daily box office. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was up a solid 28.9 percent over Tuesday's New Year's Eve performance, but still down a sizable 47.5 percent from last Wednesday's Christmas Day performance. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker registered the fourth largest New Year's Day gross of all-time (behind only 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, 2009's Avatar and 2004's Meet the Fockers).

Yesterday saw Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker pass the $400 million domestic mark. In reaching the $400 million domestic mark in thirteen days, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is the seventh fastest film to ever reach the $400 million milestone. With a healthy thirteen-day take of $407.5 million, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is running 8.5 percent behind the $445.21 million thirteen-day haul of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (which took in $21.85 million on its second Wednesday). BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will gross $33.5 million in its third weekend.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker on the Verge of $400M Domestically After $13.1M Tuesday Take
Wednesday, January 1, 2020 (Morning Update)
Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker continued to lead the daily box office on New Year's Eve Tuesday after taking in an estimated $13.11 million for the day. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was down 14.3 percent from Monday and down 35.3 percent from last Tuesday's Christmas Eve performance. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has grossed a healthy $390.60 million through twelve days of release and is set to surpass the $400 million domestic mark today. Yesterday saw Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker pass the $390.53 million final gross of Spider-Man: Far From Home to move into sixth place among 2019 releases domestically. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is running 7.7 percent behind the $423.36 million twelve-day haul of 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi (which grossed $27.73 million on its second Tuesday, which fell on Boxing Day).

In other New Year's Eve box office news, Sony's Jumanji: The Next Level placed in second for the day with an estimated $8.29 million (down a slim 0.5 percent from Monday), while fellow Sony release Little Women took third place with an estimated $4.10 million (a decline of just 4.1 percent from Monday). Jumanji: The Next Level is on the verge of crossing the $200 million domestic mark with a 19-day take of $192.08 million and Little Women has grossed a very encouraging $37.61 million in its first seven days.

Meanwhile, Disney's Frozen II placed in fourth on Tuesday with an estimated $3.99 million (down 9.7 percent from Monday), while Disney and Fox's Spies in Disguise followed in fifth with an estimated $3.64 million (up 7.1 percent over Monday's performance). With a 40-day take of $430.10 million, Frozen II has passed the $426.83 million final gross of fellow Disney release Captain Marvel to move into fourth place among 2019 releases domestically. Spies in Disguise has grossed $29.29 million in seven days, as the film continues to run in line with expectations.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Passes $750M Global Mark on Monday
Tuesday, December 31, 2019 (Morning Update)
Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker took in an estimated $15.2 million on Monday. That represented the eighth largest unadjusted second Monday gross of all-time. On a side note, Star Wars films are currently responsible for six of the nine largest second Monday grosses of all-time (the three exceptions being 2004's Shrek 2, 2009's Avatar and 2017's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle). Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker did continue to display front-loading on Monday, as the film was down 28.5 percent from Sunday and down a sizable 48.3 percent from last Monday. In the bigger picture, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has grossed a healthy $377.3 million in eleven days of domestic release and is set to surpass the $400 million domestic mark on New Year's Day (Wednesday). Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is running just 4.6 percent behind the $395.63 million eleven-day take of 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi (which grossed $27.46 million on its second Monday, which fell on Christmas Day), but will continue to fall further behind the pace of The Last Jedi as this week continues.

Internationally, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker took in an estimated $20.9 million on Monday, which brings the film's international total to $384.2 million. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker passed the $750 million global mark on Monday and has grossed $761.5 million to date globally. Estimated international totals by market for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker through Monday include $54.8 million in the United Kingdom, $46.6 million in Germany, $36.3 million in France, $33.0 million in Japan, $22.6 million in Australia, $17.7 million in China, $15.5 million in Spain, $12.7 million in Mexico, $12.3 million in Italy, $10.1 million in Brazil, $8.6 million in Russia and $8.0 million in Sweden.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Has Second Weekend Take of $72.4M to Remain #1
Monday, December 30, 2019 (Afternoon Update)
With actuals now in, Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker finished just ahead of its studio estimate with a first place take of $72.390 million in its second weekend. That represented a very sharp 59.2 percent decline from the film's opening weekend performance. With that said, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker still registered the 18th largest second weekend gross of all-time. The film's ten-day take of $362.186 million is the eighth largest ten-day start of all-time domestically (just behind the $368.168 million ten-day haul of 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi).

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Zooms Past $700M Global Mark
Sunday, December 29, 2019 (Morning Update)
Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker took in an estimated $72.00 million this weekend to remain comfortably in first place. However, after holding up well throughout the midweek; Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker did lose momentum over the weekend and was down a very sharp 59.4 percent from last weekend's debut. In comparison, 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi declined 67.5 percent in its second weekend to take in a similar $71.57 million, but The Last Jedi didn't have the advantage of any inflated post-Christmas Day grosses as part of its second weekend (and was also coming off of a significantly larger opening weekend performance).

Thanks in part to its strong midweek grosses this past week, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has grossed $361.80 million in its first ten days. That is a slim 1.7 percent behind the $368.17 million ten-day take of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (though again, The Last Jedi hadn't started to experience its post-Christmas boost yet). Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker registered the eighth largest ten-day start of all-time domestically (just behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi and just ahead of this year's The Lion King). Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker grossed an estimated $6.8 million from domestic IMAX screens this weekend. That brings the film's current domestic IMAX total to $35.8 million (which represents 9.9 percent of the film's overall domestic gross).

Internationally, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker took in an estimated $94.3 million this weekend. To date, the film has grossed $363.0 million internationally and $724.8 million globally. Estimated international totals by market for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker through Sunday include $51.4 million in the United Kingdom, $44.1 million in Germany, $34.7 million in France, $29.2 million in Japan, $21.2 million in Australia, $17.4 million in China, $14.6 million in Spain, $12.4 million in Mexico, $11.8 million in Italy, $9.6 million in Brazil, $8.3 million in Russia and $7.5 million in Sweden. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker took in an estimated $6.3 million from international IMAX screens this weekend, which brings the film's international IMAX total to $29.2 million and current global IMAX total to $65.0 million. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will open in Vietnam on Friday, January 3 and in the Philippines and South Korea the following week on Wednesday, January 8.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Passes $300M Domestic Mark After $26.2M Friday Take
Saturday, December 28, 2019 (Morning Update)
Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker continued to lead the daily box office on Friday after taking in an estimated $26.234 million for the day. After holding up nicely throughout the midweek, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker did lose some momentum on Friday, as the film was down 14.2 percent from Thursday's Boxing Day take and down an understandably sharp 70.7 percent from last Friday's opening day performance.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker passed the $300 million domestic mark yesterday and has grossed a healthy $316.031 million through eight days. That places the film a slim 1.7 percent behind the $321.365 million eight-day haul of 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi (which grossed $24.763 million on its second Friday). However, it should be reminded that Star Wars: The Last Jedi was still three days away from the Christmas holiday at the same point in its run. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker registered the seventh largest eight-day gross of all-time (just behind last year's Black Panther and just ahead of 2012's Marvel's The Avengers).

In other box office news on Friday, Sony's Jumanji: The Next Level placed in second with an estimated $11.700 million, while Disney's Frozen II followed in third with an estimated $5.999 million. Jumanji: The Next Level increased 4.9 percent over Thursday and an impressive 67.3 percent over last Friday. Frozen II was up 8.2 percent over Thursday and also held up impressively in comparison to last Friday by increasing 79.3 percent. Respective total grosses stand at $410.790 million for Frozen II in 36 days and at $151.857 million for Jumanji: The Next Level in 15 days.

Sony's Little Women claimed fourth place on its first Friday with an estimated $5.745 million, while fellow new release Disney and Fox's Spies in Disguise rounded out Friday's top five with an estimated $4.632 million. Little Women declined a slim 5.0 percent from Thursday, while Spies in Disguise was up 12.2 percent over Thursday (which represented yesterday's strongest daily percentage hold among wide releases). Respective three-day starts stand at a promising $18.220 million for Little Women and at a respectable $13.520 million for Spies in Disguise.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Registers Seventh Largest Seven-Day Start Ever with $289.7M
Friday, December 27, 2019 (Morning Update)
Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker rounded out its first week of release with an estimated $30.5 million first place take on Thursday. The Boxing Day performance of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was down 5.2 percent from Wednesday's Christmas Day performance. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has grossed a strong $289.7 million in its first seven days. That represents the seventh largest seven-day start of all-time domestically (just behind 2018's Black Panther and just ahead of this year's The Lion King). Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker continues to make up ground in its comparison with 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, as The Rise of Skywalker is running a slim 2.3 percent behind the $296.602 million seven-day launch of The Last Jedi. However, it should be reminded that Star Wars: The Last Jedi was still four days away from the Christmas holiday at the same point in its run.

With the aid of Boxing Day, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker picked back up nicely internationally with an estimated $24.4 million for the day. That brings the film's international total to $282.3 million and current global haul to $572.0 million. Estimated international totals by market for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker through Thursday include $39.0 million in the United Kingdom, $32.2 million in Germany, $25.9 million in France, $21.5 million in Japan, $17.1 million in Australia, $15.1 million in China, $11.3 million in Spain, $10.0 million in Mexico, $9.4 million in Italy, $7.7 million in Brazil, $7.0 million in Russia and $6.0 million in Sweden.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Passes $500M Global Mark on Christmas Day
Thursday, December 26, 2019 (Morning Update)
Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker remained strong on Christmas Day Wednesday with an estimated $32.016 million for the day domestically. That represented a 59.5 percent increase over Tuesday's Christmas Eve performance. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker registered the second largest Christmas Day gross of all-time, behind only the $49.326 million Christmas Day performance of 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens (which fell on a Friday and that film's eighth day of release). The Christmas Day gross of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was 16.6 percent higher than the $27.460 million Christmas Day gross of 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi (which fell on a Monday and that film's eleventh day of release).

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has grossed a healthy $258.863 million through its first six days of release. That represents the eighth largest six-day start of all-time (just behind this year's The Lion King and just ahead of 2012's Marvel's The Avengers). Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is now running just 7.1 percent behind the $278.710 million six-day launch of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which declined 16.6 percent on its first Wednesday to gross $16.890 million (though Star Wars: The Last Jedi was still five days away from Christmas Day at the time).

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker also passed the $500 million global mark on Wednesday. The film took in an estimated $16.8 million internationally for the day and should be especially strong internationally today on Boxing Day. To date, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has grossed $257.9 million internationally and $516.8 million globally. Estimated international totals by market for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker through Wednesday include $36.0 million in the United Kingdom, $29.3 million in Germany, $22.8 million in France, $19.8 million in Japan, $15.5 million in Australia, $14.6 million in China, $10.3 million in Spain, $9.3 million in Mexico, $8.1 million in Italy, $7.0 million in Brazil, $6.8 million in Russia and $5.4 million in Sweden.

In other Christmas Day box office news, Sony's Jumanji: The Next Level was up a healthy 85.0 percent over Christmas Eve Tuesday to remain in second with an estimated $12.550 million. That brings the film's thirteen-day total to $129.007 million. Fellow Sony release Little Women started off with a very nice estimated third place take of $6.425 million, while A24's Uncut Gems debuted in fourth with $5.911 million (including Tuesday night preview grosses) and Disney and Fox's Spies in Disguise arrived in fifth with an estimated $4.836 million.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Claims Second Largest All-Time Christmas Eve Gross with $20.07M
Wednesday, December 25, 2019 (Morning Update)
Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker continued to rule the box office on Tuesday with an estimated $20.074 million for the day. That represented the second largest Christmas Eve gross of all-time, behind only the $27.396 million Christmas Eve performance of 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens (which fell on a Thursday and that film's seventh day of release). The Christmas Eve gross of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker came in higher than the $17.630 million Christmas Eve gross of 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi (which fell on a Sunday and that film's tenth day of release). The Tuesday take of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was down 31.7 percent from Monday's performance. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker also registered the 20th largest Tuesday gross of all-time.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has grossed a healthy $226.847 million through five days. That represents the tenth largest five-day start of all-time (just behind 2018's Incredibles 2 and just ahead of 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron). Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker continues to make up ground in the comparison with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, as The Rise of Skywalker is running 13.4 percent behind the $261.820 million five-day launch of The Last Jedi (which declined 6.0 percent on its first Tuesday to gross $20.254 million).

In other daily box office news on Tuesday, Sony's Jumanji: The Next Level held steady in second place with an estimated $6.785 million, while Disney's Frozen II took in an estimated $3.405 million to remain in third. Jumanji: The Next Level held up very nicely on Christmas Eve, as the film declined a slim 7.8 percent from Monday. Frozen II was down 23.2 percent from Monday's performance. Respective total grosses through Tuesday stand at $395.053 million for Frozen II in 33 days and at $116.457 million for Jumanji: The Next Level in twelve days.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Passes $200M Domestically, $400M Globally on Monday
Tuesday, December 24, 2019 (Morning Update)
Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker took in an estimated $29.2 million on Monday. That represented the sixth largest Monday gross of all-time and the fourth largest first-Monday gross of all-time (behind only last year's Black Panther, 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens and this year's Avengers: Endgame). Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker declined 27.5 percent from Sunday's performance, as the film continued to stabilize for a second straight day after Saturday's very sharp percentage decline, thanks in part to the holidays and in part to good word of mouth.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker passed the $200 million domestic mark on Monday and has grossed a healthy $206.58 million through four days. That represents the ninth largest four-day domestic start of all-time (just behind the $212.82 million four-day take of The Lion King earlier this year and just ahead of the $206.32 million four-day launch of last year's Incredibles 2). Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is running 14.6 percent behind the $241.57 million four-day haul of 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi (which declined 58.0 percent on its first Monday to gross $21.56 million, though that Monday fell on December 19 as opposed to December 23).

After grossing an estimated $28.0 million internationally on Monday, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker also passed the $200 million international and $400 million global marks yesterday. To date, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has grossed $226.8 million internationally and $433.4 million globally. Estimated international totals by market for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker through Monday include $32.1 million in the United Kingdom, $26.1 million in Germany, $19.7 million in France, $16.5 million in Japan, $14.2 million in Australia, $12.9 million in China, $9.0 million in Spain, $8.0 million in Mexico, $7.0 million in Italy, $6.4 million in Brazil, $6.1 million in Russia, $4.9 million in Sweden, $3.9 million in Poland, $3.7 million in the Netherlands and $3.4 million in Denmark.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Debuts with $177.38M Domestically
Monday, December 23, 2019 (Afternoon Update)
With actuals now in, Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ultimately debuted with $177.384 million this weekend. That represented the third largest opening weekend of 2019, the third largest opening weekend ever for the month of December and the twelfth largest unadjusted opening weekend of all-time.

Thanks to a stronger than estimated Sunday hold, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker came in a bit higher than its studio estimate. The daily breakdown for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was $89.615 million for Friday (including an estimated $40.0 million from Thursday night preview shows), $47.468 million for Saturday (which represented a very sharp 47.0 percent decline from Friday including previews) and $40.301 million for Sunday (which represented a decline of just 15.1 percent from Saturday). Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker had an opening weekend to previews gross ratio of 4.43 to 1, which was much closer to the 4.35 to 1 ratio of 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens than it was to the 4.89 to 1 ratio of 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi. However, The Rise of Skywalker also had a better first-Sunday percentage hold than The Last Jedi did (which fell 19.8 percent on its first Sunday), which is a positive sign for The Rise of Skywalker as it heads into the holidays.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Starts With $175.5M Domestically, $373.5M Globally
Sunday, December 22, 2019 (Afternoon Update)
Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker debuted with an estimated $175.50 million domestically this weekend. While that represented the twelfth largest unadjusted opening weekend performance of all-time, it also was a concerning 20.2 percent below the $220.01 million debut of 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In comparison, Star Wars: The Last Jedi slowed 11.3 percent from the $247.97 million launch of 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker did open 13.2 percent ahead of the $155.08 million start of 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, though going forward, The Rise of Skywalker is highly likely to be more front-loaded than Rogue One was. Heading into the weekend, expectations for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker had ranged anywhere from $160 million to $215 million. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker registered the third largest opening weekend ever for the month of December (behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) and the eleventh largest debut ever for Disney. Currently, Disney now claims thirteen of the fourteen largest opening weekend performances of all-time.

The audience breakdown for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker skewed 59 percent male, 41 percent female, 64 percent over the age of 25 and 37 percent under the age of 25. Family audiences represented an estimated 20 percent of the film's overall audience. Of note, is that the film's audience breakdowns were quite similar to the audience breakdowns of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which suggests that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker experienced slowing among all demographics. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker grossed an estimated $18.4 million from domestic IMAX screens this weekend, which represented 10.5 percent of this weekend's overall gross.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was off to a very good start on Friday with an estimated $90.00 million (which included an estimated $40.0 million from Thursday preview shows). However, the film was down a sharper than expected 47.2 percent on Saturday to take in $47.50 million and is estimated to decline 20.0 percent on Sunday to take in $38.00 million. With Sunday falling just three days before Christmas, it is possible that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker could hold up a bit better than estimated on Sunday, though that remains to be seen. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has an estimated weekend to previews gross ratio of 4.39 to 1, which is much closer to the 4.35 to 1 ratio of Star Wars: The Force Awakens than it was to the 4.89 to 1 ratio of The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker being the final chapter of both the current trilogy and the Skywalker saga has no doubt helped lead to early front-loading and the film's mixed critical reviews likely haven't helped matters either. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker does look to be going over better with audiences than it has with critics, as the film received a solid B+ rating on CinemaScore. Though as mentioned yesterday, that is also low by recent Star Wars standards as The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and Rogue One all received A ratings on CinemaScore. The current 86 percent verified Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes does suggest that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker isn't facing the same type of online backlash that Star Wars: The Last Jedi did. Another factor that could lead to relative stabilization for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker going forward is that this year's Christmas Day releases as a whole (Sony' Little Women, Disney and Fox's Spies in Disguise and A24's Uncut Gems) aren't expected to be as strong as the Christmas Day releases that Star Wars: The Last Jedi faced back in 2017 (The Greatest Showman, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Pitch Perfect 3).

With the exception of China, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was arguably just as impressive internationally as it was domestically this weekend. The film debuted with an estimated $198.0 million internationally, which places the global launch for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker at a healthy $373.5 million. International debuts for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker this weekend included $26.8 million in the United Kingdom, $21.8 million in Germany, $15.2 million in France, $14.6 million in Japan, $12.6 million in Australia, $12.1 million in China, $7.6 million in Spain, $7.4 million in Mexico, $5.9 million in Brazil, $5.9 million in Italy, $5.8 million in Russia and $4.6 million in Sweden. The film opened throughout most of the world this weekend, with a few exceptions in Asia, including South Korea, where it will open on January 8. Internationally, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker grossed an estimated $17.1 million from IMAX screens, which places the film's global IMAX launch at $35.5 million.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Takes Off with $90.0M on Friday
Saturday, December 21, 2019 (Morning Update)
Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker grossed an estimated $90.0 million on Friday. As is normally the case, Friday's opening day performance includes the film's Thursday night preview gross (of $40.0 million). Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker registered the sixth largest opening day gross of all-time (behind only this year's Avengers: Endgame, 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, last year's Avengers: Infinity War, 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi and 2011's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2).

The opening day performance of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was 14.0 percent below the $104.684 million opening day take of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, though heading into the weekend it had been widely expected that The Rise of Skywalker would open below The Last Jedi. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker had an opening day gross to preview gross ratio of 2.25 to 1, which was slightly more front-loaded than the 2.33 to 1 ratio of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (but not as front-loaded as the 2.09 to 1 ratio of Star Wars: The Force Awakens). Some of the extra opening day front-loading for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker towards its preview grosses is due in part to the film being the final chapter in both the current trilogy and the Skywalker saga.

Critical reviews for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker have been mixed. The film appears to be going over better with audiences, as Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker received a solid B+ rating on CinemaScore, though that is also low by recent Star Wars standards (The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and 2016's Rogue One all received A ratings on CinemaScore). At the same time, it also feels like the online backlash towards The Rise of Skywalker isn't as strong as it was towards The Last Jedi two years ago and as far as this weekend goes, The Rise of Skywalker is also likely to get a bit of a relative boost on Sunday from opening several days closer to Christmas Day than The Last Jedi did. At this point, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker looks to be headed for an opening weekend take in the $185 million to $195 million range.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Claims Fifth Largest All-Time Preview Gross with $40.0M
Friday, December 20, 2019 (Morning Update)
Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was off to a healthy start on Thursday night with an estimated $40.0 million from Thursday night preview shows. Fan event preview shows for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker started at 5PM, while regular preview shows started at 6PM. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker registered the fifth largest preview gross of all-time (behind only this year's Avengers: Endgame, 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi and 2011's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2). The preview gross for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker came in just ahead of the $39.0 million preview gross of last year's Avengers: Infinity War and 11.1 percent below the $45.0 million preview gross of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Going forward, if Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker can keep pace with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it would be headed towards an opening weekend performance in the area of $195 million. As the final chapter in the Skywalker saga and given that critical reviews for The Rise of Skywalker have been significantly weaker than those of The Last Jedi, it is likely that The Rise of Skywalker will be at least a bit more front-loaded towards its Thursday night preview grosses between now and the end of the weekend than The Last Jedi was. At the same time, The Rise of Skywalker is also likely to get a bit of a relative boost on Sunday from opening several days closer to Christmas Day than The Last Jedi did.
