| Universal’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw grossed $2.316 million on Wednesday to lead the daily box office for a fifth consecutive day. Hobbs & Shaw was down 44.6 percent from Tuesday and
down a sharp 50.3 percent from last Wednesday. It should be noted that in general daily percentage declines were even sharper than usual for a Wednesday yesterday, due in part to more and more schools starting back up this week.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw has grossed a solid $117.586 million in thirteen days, which places the film 10.4 percent ahead of the $106.553 million thirteen-day haul of 2015’s San Andreas. |
| Disney’s The Lion King held steady in a close second place with $2.272 million. The Lion King trailed Hobbs & Shaw by a slim $43,262 on Wednesday. The Lion King continues to fall off
relatively quickly for a family film, as the film declined 44.1 percent from Tuesday and a sharp 53.7 percent from last Wednesday. In the bigger picture, The Lion King has grossed a massive $482.252 million in 27 days, which
currently places the film in 15th place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list. Before much longer, The Lion King will zoom past the $486.296 million total gross of 2016’s Finding Dory to move into 14th place on the list. |
| Lionsgate and CBS Films’ Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was up one spot from Tuesday to move back into third place on Wednesday with $1.979 million. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was down a
respectable 38.2 percent from Tuesday’s performance. Also of note is that on Wednesday Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark continued to register the highest daily per-location average among current wide releases.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark has grossed a stronger than expected $28.486 million in six days, which places the film 54.9 percent ahead of the $18.387 million six-day start of last year’s Goosebumps 2. |
| Sony’s The Angry Birds Movie 2 was up one place from Tuesday to move into fourth on Wednesday with $1.705 million. The Angry Birds Movie 2 was down 34.5 percent from Tuesday’s opening day performance.
That represented a very solid hold, especially since family films in general experienced very sharp percentage declines yesterday. Yesterday’s hold also suggests that a portion of the film’s potential audience indeed wasn’t aware of
the last-minute release date change to Tuesday. However, in the bigger picture, the two-day start for The Angry Birds Movie 2 stands at a modest $4.309 million. |
| Paramount’s Dora and the Lost City of Gold was down two spots from Tuesday to land in fifth on Wednesday with $1.511 million. On the heels of Tuesday’s really strong daily hold,
Dora and the Lost City of Gold came back down to Earth on Wednesday by declining a concerning 55.0 percent for the day. Dora and the Lost City of Gold has grossed a respectable $24.184 million through six days, which is
towards the lower end of consensus expectations. |
| Sony’s Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood followed very closely behind in sixth place with $1.503 million. That represented a 27.4 percent decrease from Tuesday and a solid 35.4 percent decrease from last
Wednesday, as the well-received film continues to stabilize nicely. Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood has grossed a healthy $105.434 million in 20 days. |
