Daily Box Office Report
Wednesday, April 17, 2019

By Daniel Garris

Warner and New Line’s Shazam! grossed $1.920 million on Wednesday to lead the daily box office for a thirteenth consecutive day. Shazam! decreased 40.1 percent from Tuesday and just 26.4 percent from last Wednesday. It should be reminded that midweek grosses in general this week are receiving an added boost from Holy Week. Shazam! passed the $100 million domestic mark yesterday and has grossed $101.447 million through thirteen days. The film is running 1.0 percent ahead of the $100.490 million thirteen-day haul of last year’s Ready Player One and 13.2 percent behind the $116.814 million thirteen-day take of 2015’s Ant-Man.

Disney and Fox’s Breakthrough debuted in a very close second place on Wednesday with $1.888 million. Breakthrough trailed Shazam! by a very slim $31,489 for the day. Breakthrough represents the first Fox film to be distributed by Disney after the recent completion of Disney’s acquisition of Fox. Breakthrough opened on par with the $1.888 million opening day Wednesday gross of fellow faith-based film 2016’s Miracles from Heaven (which grossed $18.369 million during its first five days of release). It is possible that Breakthrough could be a bit more front-loaded during its first five days than Miracles from Heaven was due in part to Miracles from Heaven having opened the week before Holy Week. Breakthrough looks to be going over very well with initial audiences, as the film received a strong A rating on CinemaScore.

Universal’s Little was down one spot from Tuesday to land in third place on Wednesday with $1.035 million. On the heels of Tuesday’s very impressive percentage increase; Little was down an understandably sharp 51.7 percent on Wednesday. Little has grossed $19.702 million in six days, which is in line with expectations and represents a solid start with the film’s modest production budget in mind. The Will Packer produced Little is running just 10.4 percent behind the $21.979 million six-day start of fellow Will Packer produced film What Men Want earlier this year.

Disney’s Captain Marvel was up one spot from Tuesday to move into fourth place on Wednesday with $940,412. Captain Marvel was down just 27.5 percent from Tuesday and up a terrific 4.9 percent over last Wednesday. With a marvelous 41-day gross of $389.648 million, Captain Marvel is now just $10.352 million away from reaching the $400 million domestic milestone.

Fellow Disney release Dumbo was down two spots from Tuesday to round out Wednesday’s top five with $828,974. That represented a 41.7 percent decrease from Tuesday and a decline of only 11.5 percent from last Wednesday. While Dumbo is finally showing signs of stabilization in recent days; in the bigger picture Dumbo has grossed a softer than expected $93.321 million in 20 days.

Paramount’s Pet Sematary and Lionsgate’s Hellboy claimed sixth and seventh place with respective daily grosses of $805,325 and $750,687. Pet Sematary was down 36.7 percent from Tuesday, while Hellboy declined a sharp 44.2 percent. Respective total grosses stand at a very respectable $43.823 million for Pet Sematary in thirteen days and at a softer than expected $15.063 million for Hellboy through six days.

In other box office news, Disneynature’s Penguins debuted in tenth place on Wednesday with $500,169. Penguins is playing in 1,815 locations, which gave the nature documentary a per-location average of $276 for the day. Like Breakthrough, Penguins also received a strong A rating on CinemaScore.
