Daily Box Office Report
Wednesday, March 20, 2019

By Daniel Garris

Disney’s Captain Marvel took in $4.568 million on Wednesday to lead the daily box office for a thirteenth consecutive day. After leading the daily box office one more day on Thursday, Captain Marvel is widely expected to finish in second place this weekend, behind the debut of Universal’s Us. Captain Marvel was down 39.9 percent from Tuesday and down a very respectable 46.8 percent from last Wednesday. The thirteen-day total for Captain Marvel stands at an impressive $282.25 million. That is 7.3 percent ahead of the $263.04 million thirteen-day take of 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a third weekend gross of $34.5 million for Captain Marvel.

Yesterday also saw Captain Marvel pass the $800 million global mark. After grossing an estimated $10.6 million internationally on Wednesday, Captain Marvel has grossed $530.0 million to date internationally and $812.2 million globally. Current international totals by market for Captain Marvel include $137.3 million in China, $37.8 million in South Korea, $33.7 million in the United Kingdom, $26.7 million in Brazil, $26.1 million in Mexico, $19.6 million in Australia, $17.4 million in Indonesia, $17.0 million in Russia, $16.3 million in France, $14.2 million in Germany and $13.0 million in India.

Lionsgate and CBS Films’ Five Feet Apart was up one spot from Tuesday to move back into second place on Wednesday with $987,976. Five Feet Apart was down a respectable 36.3 percent from Tuesday’s performance. The six-day start for Five Feet Apart stands at a stronger than expected $16.72 million. The film is running 15.3 percent ahead of the $14.50 million six-day gross of 2017’s Everything, Everything. With the aid of strong word of mouth, BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Five Feet Apart will gross $8.0 million in its second weekend.

Paramount’s Wonder Park was down one spot from Tuesday to place in third with $984,227. Wonder Park was down a sharp 42.2 percent from Tuesday and trailed Five Feet Apart by a very slim $3,749 for the day. Wonder Park is outpacing expectations with a six-day start of $19.51 million, but in the bigger picture the film is still performing modestly with its sizable price-tag in mind. Wonder Park is running 35.6 percent ahead of the $14.39 million six-day launch of last year’s Sherlock Gnomes. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a second weekend take of $9.3 million for Wonder Park.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World held steady in fourth with $835,055. That represented a 31.9 percent decline from Tuesday and a 46.1 percent decrease from last Wednesday. Through 27 days of release, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World has grossed a very healthy $138.42 million. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World will gross $6.5 million in its fifth weekend.

Lionsgate’s Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral rounded out Wednesday’s top five with $557,706. A Madea Family Funeral was down 39.8 percent from Tuesday and down 45.7 percent from last Wednesday.
