Fox’s Alita: Battle Angel started out with an estimated $2.425 million in preview grosses. The figure includes preview grosses from shows that began at 7PM on Wednesday, as well as grosses from a fan event on Tuesday.
The film’s preview grosses will be counted towards Friday’s opening day performance. Given the film’s preview grosses, Alita: Battle Angel looks to be on course to deliver the largest debut among this weekend’s three new wide
releases. That is especially welcome news for Alita: Battle Angel given the high price-tag of the film. |
Warner’s Isn’t It Romantic officially took first place on Wednesday with an opening day performance of $1.825 million. That represented a solid start given that the Rebel Wilson led film is expected to
experience a strong Valentine’s Day bump today. Back in February of 2016, How to Be Single started out with an estimated $700,000 in Thursday night previews and went on to gross $5.250 million for its entire opening day. Given
yesterday’s start, Isn’t It Romantic looks to be on course to deliver a stronger six-day launch than Happy Death Day 2U. |
After leading the daily box office for the previous five days; Warner’s The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part fell to second place on Wednesday with $1.077 million. That represented a concerning 46.4 percent
decline from Tuesday, though it should also be noted that yesterday’s daily percentage declines in general were even larger than usual for a Wednesday. The LEGO Movie 2 has grossed a significantly softer than expected
$39.254 million through six days of release. That places the film a disappointing 37.3 percent behind the $62.581 million six-day start of 2017’s The LEGO Batman Movie. |
Universal’s Happy Death Day 2U was off to a soft start yesterday with a fourth place take of $980,110. While it is likely that many moviegoers were unaware of the film’s fairly last minute release date
change from Thursday to Wednesday, the opening day performance of Happy Death Day 2U was lackluster even with that in mind. Unless Happy Death Day 2U is able to really pick up the pace over the holiday weekend, it appears
that moviegoers weren’t ready for the quick sequel to Happy Death Day (which opened in October 2017). |
Paramount’s What Men Want and Lionsgate’s Cold Pursuit claimed fourth and fifth place on Wednesday with respective daily grosses of $975,051 and $745,851. What Men Want declined a sharp
42.6 percent from Tuesday, while Cold Pursuit held up better for the day with a daily percentage decline of 38.7 percent. Respective six-day starts stand at $21.979 million for What Men Want (which is just under expectations) and
at $13.805 million for Cold Pursuit (which is in line with the film’s more modest expectations). |
