Warner’s Aquaman took in $2.583 million on Monday to lead the daily box office for an 18th consecutive day. Aquaman declined 69.8 percent from Sunday and 74.2 percent from last Monday’s
New Year’s Eve performance. In addition to the midweek marketplace in general slowing with the end of the holidays, the marketplace in general also experienced additional slowing on Monday from competition from the College Football
Playoff National Championship game. After 18 days of release, Aquaman has grossed a very impressive $262.607 million. That places the film 4.4 percent ahead of the $251.622 million grossed by 2013’s Man of Steel
at the same point in its run. Aquaman is currently the seventh highest grossing release of 2018 domestically and before long will be zooming past Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch to move into sixth place among 2018 releases.
|
Sony’s Escape Room continued its healthy start with a second place take of $1.366 million. Escape Room was down 66.3 percent from Sunday, which represented a good first-Monday percentage hold
for a horror film in January. The four-day launch for Escape Room stands at a stronger than expected $19.604 million. That is 46.3 percent ahead of the $13.400 million four-day take of 2016’s The Forest. Going forward,
Escape Room could hold up better than usual for a horror film thanks in part to good word of mouth (the film received a very solid B rating on CinemaScore).
|
Fellow Sony release Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse placed in third with $1.268 million. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was down 65.4 percent from Sunday and down 68.5 percent from last
Monday, as the film looks to have received a bit of a boost yesterday from its Golden Globe win on Sunday for Best Animated Feature Film. With a healthy 25-day gross of $135.247 million, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is
running just 9.4 percent behind the $149.280 million 25-day gross of 2017’s The LEGO Batman Movie.
|
Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns followed closely behind in fourth with $1.198 million. That represented a 71.5 percent decline from Sunday and a very sharp 82.0 percent decline from last Monday’s
New Year’s Eve take. The 20-day total for Mary Poppins Returns stands at a less than expected, but still solid, $140.015 million. That places the film 31.5 percent ahead of the $106.497 million 20-day haul of 2014’s
Into the Woods.
|
Paramount’s Bumblebee rounded out Monday’s top five with $1.051 million. Bumblebee decreased 71.6 percent from Sunday and 75.2 percent from last Monday. The film is on the verge of passing the
$100 million domestic mark with an 18-day gross of $98.607 million. Bumblebee is running 13.7 percent ahead of $86.739 million 18-day take of 2017’s Pitch Perfect 3.
