Daily Box Office Report
Wednesday, January 2, 2019

By Daniel Garris

Warner’s Aquaman grossed $7.379 million on Wednesday to lead the daily box office for a thirteenth consecutive day. Aquaman was down 54.9 percent from Tuesday’s inflated New Year’s Day performance and down a sharp 56.3 percent from last Wednesday’s inflated Boxing Day performance. Aquaman has grossed an excellent $222.817 million after thirteen days of release. That already places the film on the verge of surpassing the $229.024 million final gross of 2017’s Justice League. BoxOfficeReport expects Aquaman to hold up nicely again this weekend with a predicted third weekend gross of $30.5 million.

Internationally, Aquaman took in an estimated $14.7 million on Wednesday. To date, Aquaman has grossed $623.5 million internationally and a massive $846.3 million globally. Current international totals by market for Aquaman include $277.2 million in China, $30.8 million in South Korea, $25.1 million in Brazil, $24.1 million in Mexico, $20.3 million in the United Kingdom, $17.7 million in France, $16.6 million in Indonesia, $16.0 million in Russia, $14.0 million in Germany, $13.3 million in Australia and $12.7 million in Taiwan.

Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns held steady in second place with $4.414 million. Mary Poppins Returns declined 49.0 percent from Tuesday and a very sharp 59.5 percent from last Wednesday. The 15-day total for Mary Poppins Returns stands at a less than expected, but still solid, $119.006 million. Mary Poppins Returns is running 96.0 percent ahead of the $60.722 million 15-day take of 2017’s The Greatest Showman and 41.2 percent behind the $202.351 million grossed by 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle through 15 days of release. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a third weekend take of $18.0 million for Mary Poppins Returns.

Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was up one spot from Tuesday to move into third on Wednesday with $3.412 million. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was down 44.8 percent from Tuesday and down a very solid 42.2 percent from last Wednesday. It should be noted that family films in general experienced some of yesterday’s stronger daily percentage holds. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has grossed $117.744 million in 20 days. That places the film just 13.6 percent behind the $136.201 million 20-day haul of 2017’s The LEGO Batman Movie. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will gross $12.7 million in its fourth weekend.

Paramount’s Bumblebee was down one spot from Tuesday to land in fourth on Wednesday with $3.076 million. That represented a 57.2 percent decline from Tuesday and a sizable 50.9 percent decline from last Wednesday. Bumblebee passed the $80 million domestic mark yesterday and has grossed a respectable $81.696 million in thirteen days, which is in line with expectations. The film is running 10.7 percent ahead of the $73.829 million thirteen-day gross of 2017’s Pitch Perfect 3. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a third weekend haul of $13.7 million for Bumblebee.

Warner’s The Mule rounded out Wednesday’ top five with $1.737 million. The Mule decreased 57.3 percent from Tuesday’s New Year’s Day performance and a sizable 50.5 percent from last Wednesday. The Mule passed the $70 million domestic mark yesterday and has grossed a very solid $70.524 million in 20 days. That places the film 5.1 percent ahead of the $67.116 million 20-day haul of 2012’s Jack Reacher. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a fourth weekend take of $8.5 million for The Mule.
