Daily Box Office Report
Wednesday, November 21, 2018

By Daniel Garris

Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet was off to a stronger than expected first place start on Wednesday with an estimated $18.50 million. Wednesday’s performance included an estimated $3.80 million from Tuesday night shows that began at 6PM. Ralph Breaks the Internet set a new opening day record for the largest Thanksgiving weekend Wednesday opener ever, as the film opened an impressive 19.2 percent ahead of the $15.52 million opening day take of previous record holder 2016’s Moana. Ralph Breaks the Internet also opened 22.0 percent ahead of the $15.16 million Wednesday start of 2013’s Frozen. While Ralph Breaks the Internet is likely to be more front-loaded than Frozen was during its first five days of wide release, given the strength of Wednesday’s performance, Ralph Breaks the Internet will have an excellent chance of topping the $93.59 million five-day Thanksgiving weekend gross of Frozen to set a new all-time five-day opening weekend record for Thanksgiving weekend.

MGM’s Creed II was also off to a terrific start on Wednesday with an estimated second place take of $11.60 million. Wednesday’s performance included an estimated $3.70 million from Tuesday night shows that began at 7PM. The opening day performance of Creed II was a massive 92.6 percent ahead of the $6.02 million Wednesday opening of 2015’s Creed. The opening day take of Creed II was even more impressive when factoring in how well Ralph Breaks the Internet did on Wednesday. While Creed II is sure to be more front-loaded than its predecessor was, Creed II is currently set to zoom past the $42.12 million five-day Thanksgiving weekend start of Creed with ease. The early performance of Creed II suggests that the star power of Michael B. Jordan has reached new heights thanks in part to his role in Black Panther earlier this year.

Universal and Illumination’s Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch was down one spot from Tuesday to place in third on Wednesday with an estimated $7.05 million. The Grinch was up 3.6 percent over Tuesday and up an exceptional 164.7 percent over last Wednesday. The film held up nicely yesterday when taking into account the new direct competition it faced from Ralph Breaks the Internet. The Grinch is on the verge of passing the $150 million domestic mark with a thirteen-day haul of $145.47 million. That is on the high end of expectations and places the film 10.0 percent ahead of the $132.19 million thirteen-day start of 2012’s Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. Going forward, The Grinch will continue to widen the percentage gap between it and The Lorax, thanks in part to the ongoing holiday season.

Warner’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald slid three spots from Tuesday to land in fourth place on Wednesday with an estimated $6.90 million. That represented a slim 0.9 percent decrease from Tuesday’s performance. With a six-day start of $81.10 million, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is running a bit below pre-release expectations and a lackluster 20.0 percent behind the $101.39 million six-day launch of 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them (which increased 17.5 percent on its first Wednesday to gross $10.93 million). It should also be reminded that Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is performing far stronger internationally than it is domestically.

Lionsgate and Summit’s Robin Hood debuted in fifth place with an estimated $3.16 million. Wednesday’s performance includes an estimated $800,000 from Tuesday night previews that began at 7PM, as well as an estimated $400,000 from additional previews on Monday night. The opening day start for Robin Hood (including Monday's previews) was 16.9 percent ahead of the $2.70 million Wednesday opening day gross of 2016’s Allied. Robin Hood currently appears headed for a five-day start in the mid-teens to high-teens. That would be a bit above consensus expectations, but still relatively soft with the film’s production budget in mind.

Fox’s Bohemian Rhapsody and Paramount’s Instant Family claimed sixth and seventh place with respective estimated daily grosses of $2.89 million and $2.32 million. Bohemian Rhapsody was up a healthy 15.6 percent over Tuesday, while Instant Family was down just 1.3 percent. Respective total grosses stand at a strong $135.52 million for Bohemian Rhapsody in 20 days and at a respectable $20.64 million for Instant Family through six days. Both films are likely to hold up very well over the weekend.
