Daily Box Office Report
Tuesday, August 14, 2018

By Daniel Garris

Warner’s The Meg continued to impress on Tuesday with a first place take of $6.036 million. That represented a 32.6 percent jump over Monday’s performance. The Meg has led the daily box office for the past five days, but there is a strong chance that the film will fall to second place today behind the opening day take of fellow Warner Bros. release Crazy Rich Asians. Regardless, the five-day start for The Meg stands at a far stronger than expected $55.991 million. The film is running an impressive 34.4 percent ahead of the $41.674 million five-day launch of fellow Warner Bros. release Rampage earlier this year (which increased 35.5 percent on its first Tuesday to gross $3.407 million). BoxOfficeReport is predicting that The Meg will claim $21.5 million in its second weekend of release.

Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout held steady in second place with $3.286 million. On the heels of taking a hit from The Meg over the weekend, Mission: Impossible – Fallout stabilized nicely on Tuesday by increasing 55.7 percent over Monday and decreasing a solid 42.0 percent from last Tuesday. Mission: Impossible – Fallout has grossed a stronger than expected $166.716 million in 19 days, which places the film 16.9 percent ahead of the $142.606 million 19-day haul of 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a fourth weekend gross of $11.5 million for Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

Disney’s Christopher Robin grossed $2.609 million to remain in third place. Christopher Robin was up 44.2 percent over Monday and down a solid 41.8 percent from last Tuesday. The twelve-day total for Christopher Robin stands at a softer than expected, but still respectable $54.968 million. Christopher Robin is running 20.9 percent ahead of the $45.454 million twelve-day take of 2016’s Pete’s Dragon. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Disney’s Christopher Robin will gross $7.9 million in its third weekend.

Focus’ BlacKkKlansman was up one spot on Tuesday to move into fourth place with $1.582 million, while Sony’s Slender Man was down one spot to land in fifth place for the day with $1.439 million. BlacKkKlansman was up a solid 24.8 percent over Monday. Slender Man was up a much softer 4.6 percent over Monday, which could be a sign that poor word of mouth is starting to kick in. Respective five-day totals stand at $14.186 million for Slender Man and at $13.696 million for BlacKkKlansman. Both films are performing in line with consensus expectations. BoxOfficeReport is predicting second weekend grosses of $6.4 million for BlacKkKlansman and $4.9 million for Slender Man.
