By Daniel Garris

Universal’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again grossed $4.865 million on Wednesday to lead the daily box office for a third straight day. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again continued to display strong early holding power yesterday as the film was down just 27.8 percent from Tuesday. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again passed the $50 million domestic mark yesterday and has grossed $51.466 million in six days. The film is running 26.7 percent ahead of the $40.608 million six-day take of 2008’s Mamma Mia! (which declined 2.3 percent on its first Wednesday to gross $4.330 million). With its strong midweek holds in mind, BoxOfficeReport is predicting a second weekend gross of $20.5 million for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Sony’s Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation held steady in second place with $3.605 million. That represented a 32.8 percent decline from Tuesday and a decrease of only 23.7 percent from last Wednesday. Hotel Transylvania 3 has grossed a strong $103.981 million in thirteen days. That places the film 9.2 percent ahead of the $95.219 million thirteen-day haul of 2015’s Hotel Transylvania 2. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation will take in $14.0 million in its third weekend.

Fellow Sony release The Equalizer 2 remained in third place with $3.126 million for the day. The Equalizer 2 declined 37.5 percent from Tuesday, which represented the day’s sharpest daily percentage decline among wide releases. The six-day start for The Equalizer 2 stands at a stronger than expected $47.830 million. The Equalizer 2 is running 10.4 percent ahead of the $43.307 million six-day haul of The Equalizer (which decreased 29.3 percent on its first Wednesday to gross $2.568 million). BoxOfficeReport is predicting a second weekend take of $16.0 million for The Equalizer 2.

Disney’s Ant-Man and The Wasp continued to claim fourth place with $2.271 million. Ant-Man and The Wasp was down 31.5 percent from Sunday and down 32.2 percent from last Monday. Ant-Man and The Wasp has grossed $172.865 million in 20 days, which places the film a healthy 25.2 percent ahead of the $138.105 million 20-day take of 2015’s Ant-Man. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Ant-Man and The Wasp will gross $9.3 million in its fourth weekend.

Fellow Disney release Incredibles 2 rounded out the day’s unchanged top five with $1.950 million. Incredibles 2 continues to hold up very nicely, as the film decreased 22.2 percent from Tuesday and a slim 11.5 percent from last Wednesday. Incredibles 2 stands in ninth place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list with an incredible 41-day gross of $563.988 million.
