After placing in second on Saturday and Sunday, Universal’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again returned to first place at the daily box office on Monday with $4.907 million. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
held up especially well yesterday, as the film was down just 49.6 percent from Sunday. In comparison, 2008’s Mamma Mia! fell a similar 49.1 percent on its first Monday to gross $4.093 million. Thanks to strong word of mouth
and an audience breakdown that skews heavily towards female and older moviegoers, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again looks to be in store for very strong summer midweek business, just as Mamma Mia! experienced back in 2008.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again has grossed $39.859 million in four days, which is in line with expectations and 25.2 percent ahead of the $31.844 million four-day start of Mamma Mia!
(without taking into account ticket price inflation). |
Sony’s The Equalizer 2 placed in second with $3.689 million. The Equalizer 2 was down 62.8 percent from Sunday, which represented the day’s largest daily percentage decline among wide releases. In
the bigger picture The Equalizer 2 continues to exceed expectations with a strong four-day start of $39.701 million. That places the film 7.0 percent ahead of the $37.108 million four-day launch of 2014’s
The Equalizer (which declined a similar 63.6 percent on its first Monday to gross $2.970 million). Beginning this coming weekend, The Equalizer 2 will face new competition from Paramount’s highly anticipated
Mission: Impossible – Fallout. |
Fellow Sony release Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation followed in third with $3.311 million. That represented a 57.2 percent decline from Sunday and a very solid 34.1 percent decrease from last
Monday. Hotel Transylvania 3 has grossed $95.016 million after eleven days of wide release and is set to surpass the $100 million domestic mark either today or Wednesday. Hotel Transylvania 3 is running 3.1 percent
ahead of the $92.130 million eleven-day gross of 2015’s Hotel Transylvania 2. |
Disney’s Ant-Man and The Wasp took fourth place with $2.273 million. Ant-Man and The Wasp was down 58.0 percent from Sunday and down a solid 36.3 percent from last Monday
(when the film was still playing on IMAX screens). Ant-Man and The Wasp has grossed $167.278 million in 18 days, which places the film a healthy 24.6 percent ahead of the $134.219 million 18-day haul of 2015’s Ant-Man. |
Fellow Disney release Incredibles 2 rounded out the day’s top five with $1.820 million. Incredibles 2 continues to hold up nicely, as the film declined 54.0 percent from Sunday and a slim
19.0 percent from last Monday. Incredibles 2 stands in ninth place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list with an incredible 39-day gross of $559.530 million. |
Universal releases Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Skyscraper claimed sixth and seventh place with respective daily grosses of $1.558 million and $1.520 million. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
has grossed a mighty $385.723 million in 32 days, which leaves the film just $14.277 million away from reaching the $400 million domestic milestone. Skyscraper has grossed a softer than expected $48.669 million through eleven days, though
the film continues to perform stronger internationally. |
