Avengers: Infinity War Now the Highest Grossing Superhero Film of All-Time
Globally with $1.607 B
Sunday, May 13, 2018 (Morning Update)
Disney’s Avengers: Infinity War took in an estimated $61.82 million this weekend to easily remain in first place at the domestic box office. Avengers: Infinity War was down 46.1 percent from last weekend, which represents a very respectable third weekend hold for a film of this size. Avengers: Infinity War registered the fourth largest third weekend gross of all-time, behind only 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($90.24 million), 2009’s Avatar ($68.49 million) and this year’s Black Panther ($66.31 million) and ahead of 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers ($55.64 million). In addition to continuing to be helped by its very strong word of mouth, Avengers: Infinity War looks to have received a bit of an added boost this weekend from moviegoers who wanted to see the film (or see it again) before Fox’s highly anticipated Deadpool 2 enters the marketplace this coming Friday.

Avengers: Infinity War has grossed $547.83 million through 17 days of release. That places the film 19.7 percent ahead of the $457.67 million 17-day take of Marvel’s The Avengers, 9.2 percent ahead of the $501.71 million 17-day gross of Black Panther and 26.2 percent behind the $742.21 million 17-day haul of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This weekend Avengers: Infinity War passed 2016’s Finding Dory, last year’s Beauty and the Beast, 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and 2008’s The Dark Knight to move into eighth place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list.

Internationally, Avengers: Infinity War grossed an estimated $281.3 million this weekend. The film’s international performance this weekend was driven by an exceptional $200.0 million launch in China. That already makes Avengers: Infinity War the ninth highest grossing western release of all-time in China. To date, Avegners: Infinity War has grossed $1.059 billion internationally and $1.607 billion globally. Avengers: Infinity War is now the fifth highest grossing film of all-time globally and the highest grossing superhero film of all-time globally (having surpassed the $1.519 billion global gross of previous record holder Marvel’s The Avengers).

In addition to the film’s $200.0 million start in China, current international totals by market for Avengers: Infinity War include $84.6 million in South Korea, $82.1 million in the U.K., $55.6 million in Brazil, $54.8 million in Mexico, $41.0 million in India, $40.7 million in Australia, $39.8 million in France, $36.1 million in Germany, $28.6 million in Russia, $27.8 million in Japan, $24.4 million in Indonesia, $21.8 million in the Philippines, $21.3 million in Spain and $21.0 million in Italy. Avengers: Infinity War is already the highest grossing film of all-time in a handful of markets, including Brazil, Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia and is the highest grossing western release ever in India. The film is also the second highest grossing film of all-time in Mexico and Thailand and the second highest grossing western release ever in South Korea.

Avengers: Infinity War Passes $500 M Domestic Mark on Friday
Saturday, May 12, 2018 (Morning Update)
Disney’s Avengers: Infinity War passed the $500 million domestic mark on Friday after grossing an estimated $15.998 million for the day. Avengers: Infinity War reached the $500 million domestic milestone in 15 days, making it the second fastest film ever to reach the milestone, behind only 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens (10 days) and just head of last year’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi (16 days). Avengers: Infinity War was up 132.0 percent over Thursday and down a sizable, but expected 49.1 percent from last Friday.

Avengers: Infinity War has grossed $502.010 million in 15 days, which places the film 20.3 percent ahead of the $417.257 million 15-day gross of 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers and 11.1 percent ahead of the $451.658 million 15-day take of Black Panther earlier this year. Yesterday, Avengers: Infinity War passed 2016’s Finding Dory to move into eleventh place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list and by the end of the weekend, Avengers: Infinity War will also surpass last year’s Beauty and the Beast, 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and 2008’s The Dark Knight to move into eighth place on the all-time domestic list. Depending in part on just how well it performs on Mother’s Day, Avengers: Infinity War is headed for a third weekend gross anywhere from $58 million to $64 million. Anywhere in that range would represent the fourth largest third weekend gross of all-time; placing it between Black Panther ($66.307 million) and Marvel’s The Avengers ($55.644 million).

In other box office news, Warner’s Life of the Party and Universal’s Breaking In were off to respective estimated second and third place opening day starts of $4.91 million and $4.60 million. While Life of the Party is likely to hold up a bit better than Breaking In throughout the rest of the weekend, the two films could very well end up much closer to one another this weekend than had been widely anticipated. Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s Overboard and Paramount’s A Quiet Place both held up nicely on Friday with respective estimated fourth and fifth place takes of $2.18 million and $1.81 million. Because of the Mother’s Day holiday on Sunday, there will be more uncertainty than usual this weekend until weekend actuals are released on Monday.

Thanks to a significantly stronger than expected performance on Sunday, Disney’s domestic opening weekend estimate for Avengers: Infinity War has been increased to $258.2 million this morning. After shattering the single day Saturday record, Avengers: Infinity War also shattered the single day Sunday record with an estimated $69.2 million. 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens had previously held the single day Sunday record with $60.55 million. The weekend actual gross for Avengers: Infinity War will be announced later in the day.

The opening weekend gap between Avengers: Infinity War and former all-time domestic opening weekend record holder Star Wars: The Force Awakens now stands at a significant $10.23 million. It should be noted that when adjusting for ticket price inflation, Avengers: Infinity War will come in just below Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which currently has an adjusted opening weekend gross of $263.85 million (and that figure will increase a bit more as official average movie ticket prices for 2018 are announced).

The estimated international launch for Avengers: Infinity War now stands at $382.7 million. That places the film’s global launch at a record-breaking $640.9 million.

Avengers: Infinity War Sets New All-Time Opening Weekend Record with $250.0 M
Sunday, April 29, 2018 (Morning Update)
Disney’s Avengers: Infinity War opened with an estimated $250.00 million this weekend to set a new all-time opening weekend record. Avengers: Infinity War topped the $247.967 million take of previous record-holder 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens by $2.033 million and could very well widen that gap by the time actuals are released tomorrow. Avengers: Infinity War averaged a massive $55,878 for the frame from 4,474 locations. Avengers: Infinity War opened in 340 more locations than Star Wars: The Force Awakens did and that certainly helped Avengers: Infinity War establish the new opening weekend record.

Other domestic milestones for Avengers: Infinity War included topping the $207.439 million start of 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers by 20.5 percent to set a new opening weekend record for a film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and topping the $147.187 million launch of 2015’s Furious 7 by a whopping 69.9 percent to establish a new opening weekend record for the month of April. Avengers: Infinity War marks the second Disney release of 2018 to open with at least $200 million, as it joins Black Panther, which opened with $202.00 million during its first three days back in February. The exceptionally strong reception to Black Panther among moviegoers appears to have given an added boost to Avengers: Infinity War this weekend. Disney currently claims 9 of the 10 largest domestic opening weekends of all-time (the one exception being the $208.81 million debut of 2015’s Jurassic World).

After debuting with $105.97 million on Friday (which included an estimated $39.0 million from Thursday night shows that began at 6PM), it appeared that Avengers: Infinity War was likely on pace for the second largest opening weekend of all-time domestically. But the film had an exceptional hold on Saturday to take in $83.02 million for the day. That was down just 21.7 percent from Friday when including Thursday previews and up 24.0 percent over Friday without including Thursday previews. The film’s Saturday performance shattered the previous all-time Saturday record, which had been held by 2015’s Jurassic World with $69.64 million. Avengers: Infinity War is estimated to decline 26.5 percent on Sunday to take in $61.016 million, which is very likely a conservative estimate and would represent the largest Sunday gross of all-time (topping the $60.55 million first-Sunday gross of The Force Awakens).

The audience breakdown for Avengers: Infinity War skewed towards male moviegoers (58 percent) and towards moviegoers over the age of 25 (58 percent). Family audiences made up 17 percent of the film’s overall audience. Avengers: Infinity War grossed an estimated $22.5 million from domestic IMAX locations, while 3D grosses were responsible for 26 percent of this weekend’s performance. Avengers: Infinity War looks to be going over very well with moviegoers, as in addition to Saturday’s strong hold, the film received a strong A rating on CinemaScore.

Internationally, Avengers: Infinity War had an estimated five-day debut of $380.0 million. That represented the second largest international start of all-time, behind only 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, which had the added advantage of opening in China during its first weekend. Even without opening in China this weekend, Avengers: Infinity War set a new all-time global opening record with a global launch of $630.0 million.

Current international totals for Avengers: Infinity War include $42.2 million in the U.K., $39.2 million in South Korea, $25.1 million in Mexico, $23.0 million in Australia, $18.8 million in Brazil, $18.6 million in India, $17.7 million in France, $14.7 million in Germany, $12.5 million in the Philippines, $11.0 million in Italy and $10.0 million in Thailand. Markets the film set new opening weekend records in include South Korea, Mexico, Brazil, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia ($9.6 million) and Malaysia ($8.4 million). Avengers: Infinity War will open in Russia on May 3 and in China on May 11.

Avengers: Infinity War Has Second Largest Opening Day of All-Time with $105.97 M
Saturday, April 28, 2018 (Morning Update)
Disney’s Avengers: Infinity War lived up to its massive hype on Friday with an estimated opening day gross of $105.967 million. That represented the second largest opening day gross of all-time, behind only 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($119.119 million). The opening day gross of Avengers: Infinity War was just ahead of the $104.684 million opening day take of Star Wars: The Last Jedi this past December.

Avengers: Infinity War easily set a new opening day high-water mark for a film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), as it topped the $84.425 million opening day take of 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron by an impressive 25.5 percent. In comparison to the opening days of other high-profile Marvel Cinematic Universe films, the opening day performance of Avengers: Infinity War was 31.1 percent ahead of 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers ($80.814 million), 39.5 percent ahead of this year’s Black Panther ($75.941 million) and 40.3 percent ahead of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War ($75.502 million).

After a strong $39.0 million from Thursday night previews that began at 6PM, Avengers: Infinity War grossed an exceptional $66.967 million on Friday itself. While Avengers: Infinity War didn’t top the opening day gross of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the film’s performance on Friday itself was 7.8 percent stronger than the $62.119 million grossed by The Force Awakens on Friday itself when removing its massive $57.0 million preview gross from its overall opening day gross. That is a very strong sign for Avengers: Infinity War as it heads into Saturday and Sunday, though it should also be noted that in general preview grosses represent larger percentages of opening day grosses for Star Wars films than they do for Marvel films.

Disney is currently projecting an opening weekend range of $225 million to $240 million for Avengers: Infinity War (with the higher end of that range looking much more likely to BoxOfficeReport at this point). Avengers: Infinity War War received a strong A rating on CinemaScore, which is another good early sign for the film going forward.

Internationally, Avengers: Infinity War grossed an estimated $83.5 million on Friday. That brings the three-day international total for Avengers: Infinity War to $178.5 million and the film’s current global haul to $284.5 million.
