Weekend Actuals Update:

With actuals now in, Disney’s The Lion King debuted with $191.771 million, as the film came in significantly higher than its weekend estimate thanks to a stronger than expected Sunday hold. The Lion King delivered the eighth largest opening weekend of all-time domestically, as the film finished just ahead of the $191.271 million start of 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. With an updated international total of $351.8 million through Sunday, The Lion King has grossed $543.6 million to date globally.

Meanwhile, Sony’s Spider-Man: Far From Home finished just ahead of its weekend estimate with a second place take of $21.202 million, while Disney’s Toy Story 4 also came in ahead of its studio estimate with a healthy third place take of $15.551 million.

Other weekend actuals for the frame include: Crawl ($6.096 million), Yesterday ($5.021 million), Stuber ($4.115 million), Aladdin ($4.085 million), Annabelle Comes Home ($2.602 million), Midsommar ($1.596 million), The Secret Life of Pets 2 ($1.535 million), Avengers: Endgame ($1.515 million), The Farewell ($1.145 million from 35 locations), The Art of Self-Defense ($1.081 million from 550 locations) and Rocketman ($964,239).

Weekend Estimates Update:

Disney’s historic summer continued this weekend with the estimated $185.00 million first place debut of The Lion King. The highly anticipated reimagining registered the ninth largest opening weekend take of all-time. With the addition of The Lion King, Disney now claims twelve of the thirteen largest opening weekend grosses of all-time. The Lion King set new all-time opening weekend records for a July release (the previous record belonged to 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 with an opening of $169.19 million), for a PG-rated film (the previous record belonged to last year’s Incredibles 2 with a launch of $182.69 million) and for a Disney reimagining (the previous record belonged to 2017’s Beauty and the Beast with a start of $174.75 million). The Lion King opened 1.3 percent ahead of Incredibles 2 and 5.9 percent ahead of Beauty and the Beast (and it is quite possible that those percentage leads could increase a bit tomorrow when actuals are released).

Interest in 2019’s The Lion King was obviously extremely high to begin with thanks in part to 1994’s The Lion King being one of the most successful films ever from Walt Disney Animation Studios (especially when taking into account ticket price inflation). Anticipation for the reimagining was built up even more by a strong marketing campaign, an impressive vocal cast (that includes Donald Glover, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, James Earl Jones, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Seth Rogen) and by the goodwill from director Jon Favreau’s previous reimagining of The Jungle Book back in 2016. Critical reviews for The Lion King have been mixed, but other than potentially not breaking out even further, The Lion King proved to be critic-proof this weekend. The Lion King had clear four-quadrant appeal this weekend, as the film’s audience skewed 53 percent female, 47 percent male, 50 percent over the age of 25 and 50 percent under the age of 25. Family audiences represented an estimated 54 percent of the film’s overall audience. The Lion King also looks to be going over far better with audiences than it has with critics, as the film received a strong A rating on CinemaScore (a similar situation having just played out with the studio’s blockbuster reimagining of Aladdin).

The Lion King started out with $78.52 million on Friday (which included an estimated $23.0 million from Thursday shows that began at 5PM for select fan event screenings and at 6PM for traditional screenings), decreased a significant, but understandable 22.3 percent on Saturday to take in $61.00 million and is estimated to decline 25.4 percent on Sunday to gross $45.48 million. IMAX grosses were responsible for an estimated $12.6 million (6.8 percent) of this weekend’s overall domestic gross. With the aid of strong word of mouth and only one sure-fire blockbuster on this August’s release schedule (Universal’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), The Lion King is likely to hold up well throughout the rest of the summer.

Internationally, The Lion King grossed an estimated $269.4 million this weekend. With the addition of the film’s launch in China last week, The Lion King has grossed $346.0 million to date internationally and an impressive $531.0 million globally. The Lion King grossed $21.0 million in China this weekend, where the film has grossed $97.5 million to date. International debuts for The Lion King this weekend included $19.9 million in the United Kingdom, $19.6 million in France, $18.7 million in Mexico, $17.9 million in Brazil, $17.7 million in South Korea, $17.1 million in Australia, $16.7 million in Russia, $12.3 million in Germany, $9.0 million in India, $8.4 million in Spain and $6.0 million in the Netherlands. The Lion King is currently playing throughout the globe, with the exception of three major markets: Hong Kong (where the film opens this coming Thursday), Japan (where the film opens on August 9) and Italy (where the film opens on August 21). The Lion King grossed an estimated $12.6 million from international IMAX screens this weekend, which places the film’s global IMAX performance for the weekend at $25.2 million.

Disney had more historic news this weekend, as the studio’s Avengers: Endgame passed 2009’s Avatar to become the highest grossing film of all-time globally. Through Sunday, Avengers: Endgame has grossed an estimated $2.7902 billion globally, which is $500,000 ahead of the $2.7897 billion lifetime global total gross of Avatar (a figure that has just been revised slightly upwards with the addition of minor reissue grosses in recent years). After grossing an estimated $1.20 million this weekend domestically (to place in eleventh), the 87-day domestic total for Avengers: Endgame stands at $854.22 million. With the aid of recently near-finalized grosses in a number of international territories, the international total for Avengers: Endgame stands at $1.9360 billion. In addition to being the highest grossing film of all-time globally, Avengers: Endgame is the second highest grossing film of all-time domestically (behind only 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and the second highest grossing film of all-time internationally (behind only Avatar). Disney and Fox’s Avatar 2 is currently scheduled for release on December 17, 2021.

In other Disney and Marvel Cinematic Universe news this weekend, release dates for Phase 4 of the MCU were announced on Saturday evening at Comic-Con International: San Diego. Theatrical release dates were announced for Black Widow (May 1, 2020), The Eternals (November 6, 2020), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (February 12, 2021), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 7, 2021) and Thor: Love and Thunder (November 5, 2021). In addition, Disney+ dates for upcoming MCU streaming series were announced for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (Fall 2020), Loki (Spring 2021), WandaVision (Spring 2021), What If…? (Summer 2021) and Hawkeye (Fall 2021).

In even more MCU news this weekend, Sony’s Spider-Man: Far From Home placed in second with an estimated $21.00 million. Spider-Man: Far From Home was down a sharp 53.7 percent from last weekend, due in part to losing IMAX and other PLF screens to The Lion King. In the bigger picture, Spider-Man: Far From Home has grossed a spectacular $319.66 million through 20 days of release. That is in line with the film’s lofty expectations and is an impressive 21.0 percent ahead of the $262.13 million 20-day haul of 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. Spider-Man: Far From Home is now just $14.54 million away from the $334.20 million final domestic gross of Spider-Man: Homecoming. With the continued aid of strong word of mouth and the launch of The Lion King now behind us, Spider-Man: Far From Home is likely to re-stabilize going forward.

Spider-Man: Far From Home grossed an estimated $37.2 million internationally this weekend. The film has grossed $651.1 million internationally to date and is quickly approaching the $1 billion global milestone with a current global haul of $970.8 million. Current international totals by market for Spider-Man: Far From Home include $201.1 million in China, $55.4 million in South Korea, $34.1 million in the United Kingdom, $28.7 million in Mexico, $24.8 million in Japan, $23.1 million in Australia, $23.1 million in Brazil, $19.5 million in Russia, $18.3 million in France and $16.5 million in Indonesia.

Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 4 held up nicely this weekend with an estimated third place take of $14.60 million. That represented a decline of just 30.3 percent from last weekend. In addition to continuing to benefit from strong word of mouth, Toy Story 4 received an additional boost this weekend from drive-in double features with The Lion King. With a healthy 31-day gross of $375.53 million, Toy Story 4 is running 3.5 percent ahead of the $362.97 million 31-day take of 2010’s Toy Story 3. After this weekend’s strong hold, Toy Story 4 shouldn’t have a problem eventually surpassing the $400 million domestic mark.

Internationally, Toy Story 4 grossed an estimated $25.8 million this weekend. That brings the film’s international total to $483.9 million and current global total to $859.4 million. To date, international totals by market for Toy Story 4 include $69.3 million in Mexico, $59.6 million in the United Kingdom, $36.8 million in Japan, $29.6 million in Brazil, $29.1 million in China, $26.8 million in Australia, $25.3 million in Argentina, $23.9 million in South Korea, $21.6 million in France and $19.9 million in Spain.

Paramount’s Crawl claimed fourth place with an estimated $6.00 million. Crawl was down a sizable 50.0 percent this weekend, which represents a respectable second weekend hold for a horror film. The ten-day take for Crawl stands at a solid $23.83 million, which is in line with expectations. Crawl is running a very slim 0.3 percent behind the $23.91 million ten-day start of 2017’s 47 Meters Down (which declined just 36.7 percent in its second weekend to gross $7.09 million). Internationally, Crawl grossed an estimated $2.7 million this weekend from select markets. To date, Crawl has grossed $9.9 million internationally and a promising $33.7 million globally.

Universal’s Yesterday rounded out the weekend’s top five with an estimated $5.10 million. Yesterday held up very well this weekend, as the film was down only 24.0 percent. Yesterday continues to exceed expectations with a 24-day take of $57.60 million. Internationally, Yesterday took in an estimated $4.3 million this weekend. That brings the international total for Yesterday to $40.6 million and current global haul to $98.2 million.

Meanwhile, Disney’s Aladdin placed in seventh this weekend (just behind Disney and Fox’s Stuber) with an estimated $3.80 million. Aladdin was down a solid 38.4 percent this weekend, though the film did finally experience some relative slowing with the addition of The Lion King in the marketplace. The 59-day total for Aladdin stands at a significantly stronger than expected $340.04 million. Aladdin took in an estimated $9.2 million internationally this weekend. Aladdin has grossed $648.8 million to date internationally and is now on the verge of reaching the $1 billion global milestone with a current global take of $988.8 million.

On the platform front, A24’s The Farewell continued to perform well in its second weekend with an estimated $1.17 million from 35 locations. That placed The Farewell in twelfth place among all films this weekend and gave the film a strong per-location average of $33,473 for the frame. Through ten days of platform release, the critically acclaimed Lulu Wang directed film starring Awkwafina has grossed a very promising $1.67 million. The Farewell will expand to additional cities next weekend, before receiving a nationwide expansion the following week on August 2.
