Weekend Box Office Report
January 11 - January 13, 2019

By Daniel Garris

Weekend Actuals Update:

With actuals now in, STXfilms’ The Upside finished higher than yesterday’s studio estimate with a stronger than expected first place debut of $20.355 million. The Upside is the second STXfilms release to open with at least $20 million (joining 2016’s Bad Moms).

Warner’s Aquaman came in slightly ahead of its weekend estimate with a fairly close second place take of $17.351 million, while Sony’s A Dog’s Way Home finished just under its weekend estimate with a third place start of $11.251 million.

Other weekend actuals for the frame include: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse ($9.051 million), Escape Room ($8.928 million), Mary Poppins Returns ($7.651 million), Bumblebee ($7.208 million), On the Basis of Sex ($6.071 million), The Mule ($5.674 million), Vice ($3.236 million), Bohemian Rhapsody ($3.202 million), If Beale Street Could Talk ($2.407 million), Replicas ($2.375 million), Ralph Breaks the Internet ($2.258 million) and Green Book ($2.147 million).

Weekend Estimates Update:

STXfilms’ The Upside pulled off an upset victory at the box office this weekend with an estimated debut of $19.59 million. Heading into the weekend, The Upside had been widely expected to open in second place (behind Aquaman) with a debut anywhere from $10 million to the mid-teens. The long-delayed remake of 2011’s Les Intouchables was driven largely by the teaming together of stars Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston. Hart has been one of the more consistent box office draws over the past decade and proved that again this weekend with the successful launch of The Upside. In comparison to Hart’s previous films, the opening weekend take of The Upside was most similar to the $20.65 million three-day start of 2015’s The Wedding Ringer. The Upside registered the first ever first place weekend performance ever for STXfilms (which is still a fairly young distributor) and the second largest debut ever for the distributor (behind only the $23.82 million start of 2016’s Bad Moms).

The Upside started out with $6.95 million on Friday (which included an estimated $1.10 million from Thursday night shows that began at 7PM), increased a promising 13.7 percent on Saturday to gross an estimated $7.90 million and is estimated to decline 40.0 percent on Sunday to take in $4.74 million. While critical reviews have been largely negative for the film, The Upside looks to be going over far better with audiences as the film received a strong A rating on CinemaScore. With that in mind, The Upside will have a very good chance of holding up better than usual for a Kevin Hart film. The Upside is also likely to receive an added boost next weekend from the Martin Luther King holiday frame. The audience breakdown for The Upside skewed 59 percent female, 41 percent male, 74 percent over the age of 25 and 26 percent under the age of 25.

While it had to settle for a close second place this weekend, Warner’s Aquaman still held up reasonably well with an estimated $17.27 million. That represented a 44.3 percent decline from last weekend. It should also be noted that holdovers in general this weekend held up softer than had been widely anticipated. After 24 days of release, Aquaman has grossed an exceptional $287.86 million. The film is now just $12.14 million away from reaching the $300 million milestone; a milestone which the film hadn’t been expected to reach before its release. Aquaman is running 6.1 percent ahead of the $271.19 million gross of 2013’s Man of Steel at the same point in its run.

This weekend also saw Aquaman reach the $1 billion global milestone (making the film the first DCEU film to do so). Aquaman represents the second film for director James Wan to surpass the $1 billion global mark (joining 2015’s Furious 7). Aquaman grossed an estimated $27.9 million internationally this weekend. That brings the film’s international total to $732.4 million and current global haul to a massive $1.020 billion. Current international totals by market for Aquaman include $287.3 million in China, $38.2 million in South Korea, $32.0 million in Brazil, $28.6 million in Mexico, $25.8 million in the United Kingdom, $24.1 million in France, $23.5 million in Australia, $20.4 million in Germany, $18.9 million in Russia and $17.5 million in Indonesia.

Sony’s A Dog’s Way Home debuted in third with an estimated $11.30 million. That was in line with pre-release expectations, which had tended to range from $9 million to $14 million. A Dog’s Way Home opened 87.7 percent ahead of the $6.02 million start of last year’s Show Dogs and 38.0 percent behind the $18.22 million opening of 2017’s A Dog’s Purpose (though A Dog’s Way Home hadn’t been expected to reach the opening weekend heights of A Dog’s Purpose). A Dog’s Way Home started with $3.28 million on Friday (which included an estimated $535,000 from Thursday shows that began at 5PM), increased 46.8 percent on Saturday to gross $4.82 million and is estimated to decrease 33.4 percent on Sunday to take in $3.21 million. Critical reviews for A Dog’s Way Home have been lukewarm, but like The Upside, A Dog’s Way Home also looks to be going over better with audiences as the film received a healthy A- rating on CinemaScore. A Dog’s Way Home is likely to hold up very well over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, especially with no new family films entering the marketplace next weekend.

Fellow Sony release Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse followed in fourth with an estimated $9.00 million. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse continued to hold up well this weekend, as the film declined by just 31.4 percent. The film is now on the verge of reaching the $150 million domestic mark, with a strong 31-day gross of $147.78 million. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is running just 7.0 percent behind the $158.82 million 31-day haul of 2017’s The LEGO Batman Movie. Look for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to hold up well again over Martin Luther King weekend. Internationally, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse took in an estimated $9.4 million this weekend, including a $2.8 million debut in Brazil. To date, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has grossed $154.6 million internationally and $302.4 million globally.

Sony also claimed fifth place this weekend as Escape Room took in an estimated $8.90 million. Escape Room held up relatively well for a horror film in its second weekend, as the film declined 51.2 percent. The ten-day total for Escape Room stands at a stronger than expected $32.43 million. That places the film a sizable 52.2 percent ahead of the $21.31 million ten-day start of The Forest back in January of 2016. Internationally, Escape Room grossed an estimated $1.5 million this weekend from 15 mostly smaller markets. With an early international total of $2.5 million, Escape Room has grossed $34.9 million globally to date. Escape Room will open in China this coming Friday (January 18) and in Mexico the following Friday (January 25).

Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns and Paramount’s Bumblebee both experienced sharper than expected declines this weekend with respective estimated sixth and seventh place takes of $7.22 million and $6.78 million. Mary Poppins Returns was down a sharp 54.5 percent from last weekend, while Bumblebee declined a sizable 48.7 percent. Respective total grosses stand at $150.66 million for Mary Poppins Returns in 26 days and at $108.47 million for Bumblebee through 24 days. Internationally, Bumblebee remained strong this weekend with an estimated $35.6 million, while Mary Poppins grossed an estimated $10.6 million. Respective total grosses to date stand at $256.3 million internationally and $364.8 million globally for Bumblebee and at $137.2 million internationally and $287.9 million globally for Mary Poppins Returns.

In its first weekend of wide release, Focus’ On the Basis of Sex placed in eighth with an estimated $6.23 million. That represented a 286.9 percent increase over last weekend, when the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biographical film starring Felicity Jones was playing in just 112 locations. The 20-day total for On the Basis of Sex stands at a respectable $10.56 million. Critical reviews for On the Basis of Sex have been solid and the film looks to be going over well with audiences, as On the Basis of Sex received a strong A rating on CinemaScore.

In other box office news, Entertainment Studios’ Replicas debuted in twelfth with a softer than expected $2.50 million. The Keanu Reeves led sci-fi thriller had been expected to open in the area of $4 million to $7 million. Critical reviews for Replicas have been very poor, while the film received a lackluster C audience rating on CinemaScore.

Meanwhile, Annapurna Pictures’ If Beale Street Could Talk placed in thirteenth with an estimated $2.39 million in its first weekend of semi-wide release (in 1,018 locations). After an additional four weeks of platform release, the critically acclaimed If Beale Street Could Talk has grossed $7.69 million through 31 days.
