Written Weekend Update:
Disney and Marvel's Captain America: Brave New World led the way at the domestic box office this weekend with respective three-day and four-day starts of $88.84 million and $100.02 million. The fourth Captain America film, and first featuring Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson as Captain America, opened on the high-end of consensus expectations heading into the weekend. This weekend's three-day performance for Captain America: Brave New World represented the fourth largest unadjusted opening weekend ever for the month of February (behind three fellow Marvel comic book based films – 2018's Black Panther, 2016's Deadpool and 2023's Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania). The four-day start of Captain America: Brave New World was 16.9 percent lower than the $120.39 million four-day opening weekend of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, though Captain America: Brave New World had been expected to open lower than Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. With that in mind, Captain America: Brave New World will need to hold up better than Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania did, if Captain America: Brave New World is to reach the $200 million domestic mark. Captain America: Brave New World and the marketplace in general this weekend was helped out by the dual holiday frame; Valentine's Day on Friday and Presidents' Day on Monday. Captain America: Brave New World was directed by Julius Onah and also features Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Giancarlo Esposito, Tim Blake Nelson and Harrison Ford.
Captain America: Brave New World started out with $40.91 million on Valentine's Day Friday (which included an estimated $12.0 million from Thursday preview shows that began at 2PM), declined 32.2 percent on Saturday to take in $27.72 million, decreased 27.1 percent on Sunday to gross $20.21 million and was down 44.7 percent on Presidents' Day Monday to gross $11.18 million. The film's three-day opening weekend to preview gross ratio of 7.40 to 1 in an encouraging early sign going forward, though at the same time, that ratio was also inflated from Valentine's Day falling on Friday. The audience breakdown for Captain America: Brave New World skewed 63 percent male, 37 percent female, 68 percent over 25 and 32 percent under 25. Critical reviews for Captain America: Brave New World have been mixed. The film's B- rating on CinemaScore suggests that Captain America: Brave New World is only going over slightly better with audiences than it has with critics. However, at the same time the film's initial daily holds this weekend do point towards there being potential for Captain America: Brave New World to hold stronger in the weeks ahead than the film's CinemaScore rating would typically suggest for a comic book based film. Over the four-day frame, Captain America: Brave New World grossed an estimated $10.5 million from domestic IMAX screens, which represented 10.5 percent of this weekend's overall domestic four-day gross for the film.
Internationally, Captain America: Brave New World debuted with an estimated $92.4 million from 52 international markets. Through Sunday, the estimated global total for Captain America: Brave New World stands at $181.2 million. Debuts by international market for Captain America: Brave New World this weekend included $10.5 million in China, $8.5 million in the United Kingdom, $6.6 million in Mexico, $5.6 million in South Korea, $4.7 million in France, $3.8 million in Australia, $3.6 million in Brazil, $3.6 million in Germany, $3.1 million in Japan, $2.9 million in Italy and $2.8 million in Spain. Through Monday, Captain America: Brave New World has grossed an estimated $7.5 million from international IMAX screens, for a global IMAX total of $18.0 million through Monday.
Sony's release of Studiocanal's Paddington in Peru debuted in second place with respective three-day and four-day takes of $12.76 million and $16.01 million. The third film in the Paddington series opened on the low end of consensus expectations heading into the weekend. Paddington in Peru was able to open 6.7 percent higher than the $15.00 million four-day start of Paddington 2 back in January of 2018, but at the same time opened a significant 37.2 percent below the $25.49 million four-day start of Paddington back in 2015. Although Paddington in Peru has gone over well with critics and audiences alike (the film received a strong A rating on CinemaScore), box office potential for Paddington in Peru looks to have been limited at least somewhat by the seven-year wait since Paddington 2, despite Paddington 2 having been beloved by both audiences and critics. Paddington in Peru was directed by Dougal Wilson, stars Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Olivia Colman, Antonio Banderas and features Ben Whishaw as the voice of Paddington.
Paddington in Peru began its run with $5.18 million on Friday (which included an estimated $0.60 million from Thursday preview shows that began at 2PM and an unspecified amount from early access shows the previous Saturday), decreased 19.6 percent on Saturday to gross $4.17 million, declined 18.1 percent on Sunday to take in $3.41 million and was down a slim 4.8 percent on Monday to gross $3.25 million. Internationally, where Paddington in Peru has been playing for a while, the film grossed an estimated $7.3 million this weekend from 53 international markets. Through Sunday, respective totals for Paddington in Peru stand at $115.8 million internationally and at $128.6 million globally.
Universal and DreamWorks Animation's Dog Man placed in third over the four-day frame with $13.40 million. Over the three-day frame, Dog Man took fourth place with $9.79 million. Dog Man was down 29.1 percent over the three-day weekend, while the film's four-day gross declined a very slim 2.9 percent from last weekend's three-day performance. This weekend's hold for Dog Man was especially impressive given the new direct competition the film faced for family audiences from Paddington in Peru. Dog Man passed the $70 million domestic mark this weekend and has grossed $70.49 million through 18 days domestically. Dog Man is already within shouting distance of the $73.92 million final domestic gross of 2017's Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. Internationally, Dog Man grossed $4.3 million this weekend from 47 international markets. Through Sunday, respective totals for Dog Man stand at $17.7 million internationally and at $84.6 million. The United Kingdom remains the top international market for Dog Man with $7.0 million through Sunday.
Sony & Spyglass' Heart Eyes had an absolutely terrific hold this weekend to place in fourth over the four-day frame with $10.87 million. Over the three-day frame, Heart Eyes inched past Dog Man for third place with $9.88 million. Thanks in part to Valentine's Day falling on Friday, last weekend's debut having been deflated by Super Bowl LIX, strong critical reviews and good word of mouth, this weekend's three-day gross for Heart Eyes increased by 19.0 percent over last weekend. This weekend's four-day gross was up 30.9 percent over last weekend's three-day start. Through Monday, the eleven-day domestic total for the modestly budgeted Heart Eyes stands at a promising $22.40 million. That is just 8.3 percent behind the $24.43 million eleven-day gross of 2023's Thanksgiving. It will be interesting to see if the well-received Heart Eyes will continue to hold up well going forward, now that the Valentine's Day holiday is behind us.
This weekend also saw CMC Pictures' release of Enlight Pictures' Ne Zha 2 have a very impressive launch in moderate release to round out this weekend's top five. While weekend actuals for Ne Zha 2 aren't currently available, the latest unofficial industry estimates for the film place the film's three-day start at $7.65 million and the film's four-day start at $9.50 million. Ne Zha 2 was only playing in 660 locations this weekend, which gave the film an estimated per-location average of $14,394 over the four-day frame. That average is made even more impressive when considering that Ne Zha 2 was only playing on a single screen at many of its locations this weekend and that the film didn't have wide ranging PLF screens domestically. Ne Zha 2 also held up very nicely as the holiday weekend went on, as the film's four-day weekend to three-day weekend ratio of 1.24 to 1 was very healthy when considering that Ne Zha 2 had two days of previews (Wednesday and Thursday) that are counted towards the three-day weekend. Not enough showtimes to fully meet demand in certain cities, good word of mouth and more and more people learning about Ne Zha 2 in North America are factors that all contributed to the film's initial strong daily holds this weekend. The Jiaozi directed Ne Zha 2 (the computer animated follow-up to 2019's Ne Zha), has become an absolute box office phenomenon in China, as through Tuesday the film is approaching the $1.7 billion mark in China (since the film's release back on January 29). Over the three-day weekend, Ne Zha 2 grossed an estimated $22.0 million from IMAX screens in China alone. Through Monday, the estimated IMAX total for Ne Zha 2 in China stands at $106.0 million.
Meanwhile, Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King placed in sixth with respective three-day and four-day grosses of $4.24 million and $5.33 million. Mufasa: The Lion King continued to display very strong holding power this weekend, as the film's three-day gross was up 5.8 percent over last weekend and the film's four-day gross was up 32.9 percent over last weekend's three-day frame. Through Monday, the 60-day domestic total for Mufasa: The Lion King stands at $241.93 million. That gives Mufasa: The Lion King a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 6.83 to 1. Internationally, Mufasa: The Lion King grossed $5.8 million this weekend from 52 international markets. Through Sunday, respective totals for Mufasa: The Lion King stand at $445.5 million internationally and at $686.3 million globally.
After a modest start last weekend, Universal's Love Hurts held up very nicely this weekend in its own right. The action comedy placed in seventh with respective three-day and four-day grosses of $4.20 million and $4.70 million. For the three-day frame, Love Hurts declined 27.7 percent from last weekend, while the film's four-day gross was down just 19.0 percent from last weekend's three-day debut. Through Monday, the eleven-day total for Love Hurts stands at $12.62 million.
In international box office news, Universal's Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy debuted with $35.5 million from 71 international markets. Debuts by international market for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy this weekend included an impressive $15.5 million in the United Kingdom, $3.4 million in Australia, $2.8 million in France, $2.0 million in Poland, $1.9 million in the Netherlands and $1.0 million in Spain. Domestically, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy debuted on streaming via Peacock this past Thursday.
