Written Weekend Update:

Warner Bros.'s highly anticipated and long awaited Beetlejuice Beetlejuice delivered in a big way at the box office this weekend with a first place debut of $111.00 million. The sequel to the 1988 classic horror comedy Beetlejuice lived up to the massive opening weekend
expectations that had surrounded the film. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice delivered the second largest opening weekend ever for the month of September (behind only the $123.40 million start of fellow Warner Bros. release IT back in 2017), the third largest opening weekend of 2024 thus far
(behind only Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2) and the eleventh largest opening weekend ever for Warner Bros. There was immense initial demand for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice as fans had been waiting decades to see director Tim Burton and stars Michael, Keaton, Winona Ryder and
Catherine O'Hara return for a sequel. New cast member Jenna Ortega also helped build up further anticipation for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, especially with younger moviegoers.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice started out with $41.82 million on Friday (including an estimated $13.0 million from Thursday preview shows that began at 3PM and early access shows on Wednesday night), held up exceptionally well on Saturday by being essentially unchanged from Friday
with $41.80 million and declined 34.5 percent on Sunday to gross $27.38 million. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice having an opening weekend to preview gross ratio of 8.54 to 1 is a very encouraging early sign for the film going forward, especially since the film's preview gross includes the early access shows
from Wednesday night. With that said, it should also be noted that there being opening week NFL games on both Thursday night and Friday night no doubt led to some moviegoers waiting until Saturday to catch Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The audience breakdown for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice skewed
54 percent female, 46 percent male, 76 percent over 25 and 24 percent under 25. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice also had strong appeal with Hispanic American audiences (representing 31 percent of the film's overall audience).

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has gone over well with critics and the film also looks to be going over fairly well with audiences after receiving a B+ rating on CinemaScore. In addition to benefiting from good critical reviews and good word of mouth, going forward
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice should also benefit from skewing towards older moviegoers and from the ongoing lead-up to the Halloween holiday next month. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice grossed an estimated $9.3 million from domestic IMAX screens this weekend, which represented 8.4 percent of this weekend's
overall domestic gross. All premium formats (including IMAX) were responsible for an estimated 33 percent of this weekend's overall domestic gross.

Internationally (where the film isn't expected to be nearly as strong), Beetlejuice Beetlejuice started out with $36.2 million this weekend from 69 international markets. That places the film's global launch at $147.2 million. Debuts for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice this weekend
by international market included $9.7 million in the United Kingdom, $6.4 million in Mexico, $2.6 million in Australia, $2.5 million in Spain, $1.8 million in Italy and $1.2 million in Brazil. In the coming week Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will open in France on Wednesday (September 11) and in Germany on
Thursday (September 12). It will be interesting to see if Beetlejuice being a less popular property internationally could potentially lead to especially strong international holding power for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. International IMAX screens were responsible for $1.3 million of this weekend's
international performance for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which places the global IMAX total for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice at $11.0 million through Sunday.

After leading the domestic box office for five of the previous six frames, Disney's Deadpool & Wolverine dropped to second place this weekend with $7.00 million. Deadpool & Wolverine was down a sharp 54.7 percent from last weekend, but that decline was quite reasonable given
the new competition from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and that last weekend's performance for Deadpool & Wolverine was inflated by the Labor Day holiday frame. Deadpool & Wolverine and the marketplace in general also had to deal with the start of the NFL season this weekend. In the bigger
picture, the 45-day domestic total for Deadpool & Wolverine stands at $613.84 million. Deadpool & Wolverine is currently in fifteenth place on the all-time domestic list and before too much longer will surpass 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi to move into fourteenth place. In all likelihood,
Deadpool & Wolverine will also re-stabilize next weekend. Internationally, Deadpool & Wolverine grossed an estimated $8.4 million this weekend. That brings the film's international total to $673.2 million and current global haul to a massive $1.287 billion.

ShowBiz Direct's Reagan placed in third with a second weekend take of $4.83 million. The Ronald Reagan biopic had a very nice second weekend hold by declining 36.9 percent from last weekend's three-day start. While Reagan hasn't gone over well with critics, the film clearly
looks to be going over very well with audiences given the film's strong A rating on CinemaScore and the film's strong initial holding power thus far. With a ten-day domestic total of $18.13 million, the current total gross to opening weekend ratio for Reagan already stands at 2.37 to 1. In addition to the
film's strong word of mouth, going forward Reagan should also continue to be helped out by skewing towards older moviegoers and by playing well in more rural areas of the United States.

It was a very close race for fourth place this weekend between Disney and 20th Century's Alien: Romulus and Sony's It Ends With Us. Alien: Romulus ended up taking fourth with $3.93 million, while It Ends With Us placed in fifth with $3.71 million.
It Ends With Us did have the better percentage hold between the two films this weekend; It Ends Was Us declined a so-so 49.9 percent in comparison to a sharp 57.5 percent decline for Alien: Romulus this weekend. Alien: Romulus was not only hurt by the new competition from
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice this weekend, but also by losing the remainder of its IMAX screens and showtimes to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Respective total domestic grosses stand at $141.33 million for It Ends With Us through 31 days and at $97.22 million for Alien: Romulus through 24 days.
|
This weekend also saw Alien: Romulus and It Ends With Us both pass the $300 million global mark. Alien: Romulus grossed an estimated $13.7 million internationally this weekend from 52 international markets, which brings respective totals for the film to $217.2 million
internationally and $314.4 million globally. It Ends With Us grossed an estimated $10.8 million internationally this weekend from 60 international markets; for respective totals of $168.0 million internationally and $309.3 million globally.
|
Sony / AFFIRM's The Forge held up well this weekend by declining a very solid 35.0 percent to place in sixth with $3.00 million. That brings the ten-day total for The Forge to $20.82 million. Faith-based dramas from the Kendrick Brothers typically display strong holding power at the box office
and that has been the case for The Forge thus far, as the film has a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 3.13 to 1.
