|
With actuals, Disney and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 outpaced this weekend's studio estimate with a second weekend take of $62.009 million. That was down a very respectable 47.6 percent from
last weekend's debut.
|
Universal, Illumination and Nintendo's The Super Mario Bros. Movie finished below its studio estimate with a weekend take of $12.612 million.
|
Other weekend actuals for the frame include: Book Club: The Next Chapter ($6.678 million), Evil Dead Rise ($3.720 million), Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret ($2.518 million),
Hypnotic ($2.402 million), John Wick: Chapter 4 ($2.083 million), Love Again ($1.451 million), Air ($0.884 million), Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves ($0.793 million),

Weekend Estimates Update:
|
Disney and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 took in an estimated $60.50 million this weekend to easily lead the domestic box office for a second consecutive frame. The James Gunn directed sequel
declined 48.9 percent this weekend, which represented the best second weekend percentage hold for a film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since the re-opening of domestic theatres in 2020. Since re-opening, most films within
the MCU have had second weekend declines in the range of 60 to 70 percent, with one previous exception being Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which declined 54.0 percent in its second weekend back in September of 2021.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 also had a better second weekend hold than each of the previous two Guardians of the Galaxy films; Guardians of the Galaxy declined 55.3 percent for a second weekend take of
$42.12 million back in August of 2014 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 decreased a similar 55.5 percent to gross $65.26 million in its second weekend during May of 2017.
|
Heading into the weekend, it appeared that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would have a very solid second weekend hold for a comic book based sequel and the film ultimately went beyond those expectations this weekend. Good
critical reviews, strong word of mouth (the film received an A rating on CinemaScore), facing weaker new competition than both previous Guardians of the Galaxy films faced in their respective second weekends
(which helped lead to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 holding onto a higher than usual percentage of its showtimes this weekend) and the Mother's Day holiday on Sunday all contributed towards this weekend's hold for
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
|
Thanks in part to relatively strong holding power thus far, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 passed the $200 million domestic mark this weekend and has grossed $213.20 million through ten days of domestic
release. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is running 14.2 percent behind the $248.42 million ten-day take of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is quite respectable given that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hadn't been
expected to match Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 domestically. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is also already on the verge of surpassing the $214.15 million current total domestic gross of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. Next weekend,
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will face much tougher new competition with the release of Universal's Fast X.
|
This weekend also saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 zoom past the $500 million global mark. The film grossed an estimated $91.9 million internationally this weekend. That brings the international total
for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to $315.6 million and the film's current global haul to $528.8 million. Estimated totals for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by international market through Sunday include
$58.4 million in China, $29.6 million in the United Kingdom, $24.7 million in Mexico, $22.1 million in South Korea, $18.3 million in France, $13.4 million in Germany, $13.1 million in Australia, $12.4 million in Brazil,
$8.8 million in Italy, $7.8 million in Indonesia, $7.3 million in Japan and $7.0 million in Spain.
|
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 grossed an estimated $11.7 million from global IMAX screens this weekend, which brings the global IMAX total for the film to $43.6 million. This weekend saw the film gross
$4.5 million from domestic IMAX screens, $4.2 million from international IMAX screens (not including China) and $3.0 million from IMAX screens in China. Through Sunday, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has grossed $17.9 million from
domestic IMAX screens and $25.7 million from international IMAX screens (with $10.4 million of that total coming from China). Next weekend Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will lose its IMAX screens to Fast X.
|
Universal, Illumination and Nintendo's The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed an estimated $13.00 million to hold steady in second place. On the heels of last weekend's sharp decline, the computer animated
blockbuster re-stabilized very nicely this weekend by declining 29.9 percent. The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues to pad its status as the highest grossing release of 2023 thus far domestically with a 40-day take of
$535.96 million. This weekend saw The Super Mario Bros. Movie surpass 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and 2008's The Dark Knight to move into 15th place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list. Before much longer,
The Super Mario Bros. Movie will surpass the $543.64 million total domestic gross of 2019's The Lion King to move into 14th place on the all-time domestic list. The current total gross to opening weekend ratio for
The Super Mario Bros. Movie stands at a healthy 3.66 to 1.
|
The Super Mario Bros. Movie did experience more slowing internationally this weekend, but still grossed an estimated $26.1 million from 80 international markets for the frame. Respective totals for
The Super Mario Bros. Movie stand at $674.5 million internationally and at a massive $1.210 billion globally. This weekend in Japan, The Super Mario Bros. Movie declined 55 percent to gross an estimated $8.2 million. The film's
total gross in Japan through Sunday stands at $59.8 million. Additional totals for The Super Mario Bros. Movie by international market through Sunday include $82.4 million in Mexico, $63.2 million in the United Kingdom,
$54.9 million in France, $50.1 million in Germany, $33.2 million in Australia, $25.9 million in Spain, $25.2 million in Brazil, $23.8 million in China and $21.5 million in Italy.

Focus's Book Club: The Next Chapter debuted in third place with an estimated $6.50 million. The Bill Holderman directed sequel starring Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen opened
below its already modest pre-release expectations. Book Club: The Next Chapter also opened significantly below the $13.58 million opening of the original Book Club back in May of 2018, as well as the $12.70 million start of
80 For Brady this past February (which also starred Fonda). It seems as though potential for Book Club: The Next Chapter was limited at least somewhat by the decision to open the film so soon after 80 For Brady. The audience
breakdown for Book Club: The Next Chapter skewed 77 percent female, 23 percent male, 66 percent over the age of 45 and 34 percent under the age of 45. Book Club: The Next Chapter doesn't look to be going over as well with audiences as Book Club did, as
Book Club: The Next Chapter received a B rating on CinemaScore, in comparison to the A- rating received by Book Club. As was the case with Book Club, critical reviews for Book Club: The Next Chapter have been mixed. 2018's Book Club had
exceptional holding power, as the film went on to gross $68.57 million domestically, for a total gross to opening weekend ratio of 5.05 to 1. As a sequel, Book Club: The Next Chapter is highly unlikely to match the holding power of its predecessor, but the film will still
have a decent chance of holding up well going forward.
|
Internationally, Book Club: The Next Chapter started out with an estimated $3.1 million this weekend from 35 international markets. That places the film's global total at $9.7 million. Debuts by
international market for Book Club: The Next Chapter this weekend included $0.77 million in Australia, $0.47 million in Germany and $0.41 million in the United Kingdom.
|
Warner Bros. and New Line's Evil Dead Rise placed in fourth with an estimated $3.73 million. Evil Dead Rise declined 36.6 percent this weekend, which represented a very nice hold for a horror film
part of an established franchise. Thanks in part to very solid holding power, Evil Dead Rise passed the $60 million domestic mark this weekend and has grossed a stronger than expected $60.19 million through 24 days. Internationally,
Evil Dead Rise also held up well this weekend by taking in an estimated $6.7 million from 65 international markets. Respective totals for the modestly budgeted Evil Dead Rise stand at $71.6 million internationally and at $131.8 million globally. Estimated totals for
Evil Dead Rise by international market through Sunday include $6.3 million in the United Kingdom, $6.2 million in Mexico, $4.5 million in India, $4.2 million in Brazil, $4.1 million in Indonesia, $4.1 million in France,
$3.5 million in Spain, $3.4 million in Malaysia, $3.2 million in Germany and $3.1 million in Italy.
|
Lionsgate's Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret rounded out the weekend's top five with an estimated $2.50 million. With the aid of Mother's Day and continued strong word of mouth,
Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret declined only 23.0 percent this weekend. However, despite this weekend's healthy hold, the 17-day domestic take for Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret stands at a modest
$16.48 million.
|
Ketchup Entertainment's Hypnotic debuted in sixth place with an estimated $2.36 million. That was in line with the low expectations for the film, which were kept in check by Hypnotic being a lower
profile wide release from a smaller distributor. Hypnotic, an action thriller directed by Robert Rodriguez and starring Ben Affleck, was able to attract at least a few moviegoers thanks to the film's star and director. Critical reviews
for Hypnotic have been mostly negative and the film doesn't look to be going over that much better with audiences after receiving a modest C+ rating on CinemaScore. After a per-location average of $1,112 this weekend (from 2,118 locations); it will
be difficult for Hypnotic to hold onto locations and showtimes for long.
|
Lionsgate's John Wick: Chapter 4 grossed an estimated $1.93 million to place in seventh. John Wick: Chapter 4 declined a slim 17.8 percent this weekend, which represented the best percentage hold of any
holdover in wide release this weekend. The 52-day domestic total for John Wick: Chapter 4 stands at a strong $182.96 million.
