Weekend Actuals Update:

Thanks to a much stronger than expected Sunday hold, Universal, Illumination and Nintendo's The Super Mario Bros. Movie finished significantly higher than estimated this weekend with a first place take of $92.347 million. That represented the seventh largest second weekend gross of all-time and brings the film's twelve-day domestic total to $353.171 million. Internationally, The Super Mario Bros. Movie also came in significantly higher than estimated with a weekend take of $102.5 million from 71 international markets. That brings the film's international total to $339.8 million and global haul through Sunday to a massive $693.0 million.

Other weekend actuals for the frame include: The Pope's Exorcist ($9.006 million), John Wick: Chapter 4 ($8.047 million), Renfield ($8.026 million), Air ($7.847 million), Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves ($7.529 million), Suzume ($5.002 million), Mafia Mamma ($2.032 million), Scream VI ($1.481 million), Nefarious ($1.316 million), Creed III ($1.018 million), His Only Son ($0.547 million) and Sweetwater ($0.351 million).

Weekend Estimates Update:

Universal, Illumination and Nintendo's The Super Mario Bros. Movie took in an estimated $87.00 million this weekend to continue to lead the domestic box office with ease. The computer animated blockbuster was down just 40.6 percent from last weekend, which is an exceptional second weekend hold for a film of this magnitude. Clearly, overall word of mouth is very strong for The Super Mario Bros. Movie (which received an A rating on CinemaScore). The Super Mario Bros. Movie outpaced the $85.98 million second weekend gross of 2019's Frozen II to set a new record for the largest ever second weekend gross for an animated film. This weekend's performance for The Super Mario Bros. Movie also represented the ninth largest second weekend gross of all-time for any film. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is already nearing the $350 million domestic mark, as the film has grossed $347.82 million through twelve days of release. Furthermore, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is already the fourth highest grossing film of all-time domestically for Illumination, and before much longer the film will zoom past the $369.70 million final gross of last year's Minions: The Rise of Gru to become the highest grossing film ever for Illumination domestically.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie also continued to impress internationally this weekend with an estimated $94.1 million from 71 international markets. That brings the film's international total to $330.1 million and current global haul to a massive $678.0 million. Estimated international totals for The Super Mario Bros. Movie through Sunday by market include: $52.0 million in Mexico, $43.8 million in the United Kingdom, $29.7 million in Germany, $21.2 million in France, $19.7 million in Australia, $16.9 million in China, $15.4 million in Spain, $13.8 million in Italy, $12.0 million in Brazil, $11.6 million in Central America and $7.1 million in the Netherlands. Later this month, The Super Mario Bros. Movie will open in South Korea on Wednesday, April 26 and in Japan on Friday, April 28. The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed an estimated $6.4 million from global IMAX screens this weekend, which places the film's global IMAX haul at $32.8 million. This weekend The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed an estimated $4.4 million from domestic IMAX screens (for a domestic IMAX total of $24.5 million) and $2.0 million from international IMAX screens (for an international IMAX total of $8.3 million).

Sony's The Pope's Exorcist debuted in a distant second place this weekend with an estimated $9.15 million. While the Julius Avery directed R-rated horror film starring Russell Crowe only opened in line with modest pre-release expectations, The Pope's Exorcist was able to outpace Universal's Renfield, which had been widely expected to be this weekend's highest grossing new release. It should also be noted that the modestly budgeted The Pope's Exorcist was a significantly less expensive production than Renfield was. Critical reviews for The Pope's Exorcist have been mixed, but the film looks to be going over significantly better with audiences, as The Pope's Exorcist currently has an 83 percent Verified Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Pope's Exorcist has been a stronger performer internationally than domestically, as the film grossed an estimated $10.4 million this weekend from 51 international markets (including a debut of $1.1 million in Italy). Respective totals for The Pope's Exorcist stand at $27.4 million internationally and at $36.6 million globally (which is quite solid given the film's price-tag).

Meanwhile, places third through sixth are fairly bunched together this weekend with Lionsgate's John Wick: Chapter 4, Universal's Renfield, Amazon Studios' Air and Paramount's Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves all estimated in the range of $7.35 million to $7.93 million for the weekend.

Lionsgate's John Wick: Chapter 4 currently has the edge for third place with an estimated $7.93 million for the frame. John Wick: Chapter 4 was down a respectable 45.2 percent from last weekend. Between the strong second weekend hold of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and six new major releases entering the marketplace this weekend, in general it was difficult for holdovers (other than The Super Mario Bros. Movie) to hold up well this weekend. John Wick: Chapter 4 has grossed $160.11 million through 24 days of domestic release. That is 15.5 percent ahead of the $138.68 million 24-day gross of 2019's John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (which declined just 33.1 percent in its fourth weekend to gross $7.42 million). Before much longer, John Wick: Chapter 4 will surpass the $171.02 million final domestic gross of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum to become the highest grossing John Wick film domestically. Internationally, John Wick: Chapter 4 grossed an estimated $18.6 million this weekend from 76 international markets. Respective totals stand at $189.6 million internationally and at $349.7 million globally.

Universal's Renfield is currently in fourth place with an estimated $7.77 million. The R-rated Chris McKay directed horror comedy featuring Nicolas Cage, Nicholas Hoult and Awkwafina opened below already scaled back pre-release expectations. Instead, Renfield opened in the same neighborhood as the $7.13 million start of last year's The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (which also starred Cage). And as mentioned, unlike The Pope's Exorcist (and to a lesser extent The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent), Renfield wasn't an inexpensive production. Mixed critical reviews, the continued breakout performance of fellow Universal release The Super Mario Bros. Movie, opening the film the same weekend as The Pope's Exorcist and opening the film just one week before Warner's Evil Dead Rise are all factors that contributed to this weekend's softer than expected start for Renfield. The audience reception for Renfield appears to be slightly better than the film's reception with critics, as Renfield received a B- rating on CinemaScore and currently has an 80 percent Verified Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. Internationally, Renfield took in just an estimated $2.3 million this weekend from 46 markets, though other than the United Kingdom and Spain, the film opened in mostly smaller international markets this weekend and will still open in a number of larger international markets through the rest of April and May. This weekend's global start for Renfield was $10.0 million.

Amazon Studios' Air is currently very close behind Renfield in this weekend's rankings with an estimated fifth place take of $7.72 million. Air declined 46.6 percent from last weekend's three-day weekend performance, which while still respectable, represented a larger second weekend percentage decline than most had been expecting, given the film's strong critical reviews and strong word of mouth. As mentioned, this weekend proved to be a difficult frame for holdovers in general to have strong holds and fans of the Nike Air brand and Michael Jordan may have inflated the film's five-day start a bit last week as well. With that said, Air will have a very good chance of stabilizing next weekend. The twelve-day domestic total for Air stands at $33.28 million. Internationally, where the film is being handled by Warner Bros., Air grossed an estimated $6.2 million this weekend from 66 international markets. That brings the film's international total to $20.8 million and current global total to $54.1 million.

Paramount's Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves placed in sixth with an estimated $7.35 million. That represented a 47.0 percent decline from last weekend, as Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was able to stabilize somewhat this weekend. The 17-day domestic total for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves stands at $74.07 million. Internationally, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves grossed an estimated $13.8 million this weekend from 64 international markets. Respective totals for the film stand at $83.0 million internationally and at $157.1 million globally.

Sony and Crunchyroll's Suzume debuted in seventh place with an estimated $5.00 million. The critically acclaimed Makoto Shinkai directed anime film opened in line with expectations. The three-day start of Suzume just outpaced the $4.85 million five-day start of Shinkai's previous film, Weathering with You, which was released domestically by GKIDS (on a Wednesday) back in January of 2020. It should be noted that in opening in 2,170 locations, Suzume received a significantly wider launch than Weathering with You did (1,020 locations for that film's first two days, followed by 486 opening weekend locations). Also of note is that with Suzume, Sony is now involved with distributing Crunchyroll releases domestically. Suzume split domestic IMAX screens with The Super Mario Bros. Movie this weekend and grossed an estimated $1.0 million from domestic IMAX screens. Suzume, which has been a very strong performer in Japan and China, has grossed an estimated $15.2 million from global IMAX screens to date.

Other new releases this weekend included Bleecker Street's Mafia Mamma, which debuted with an estimated $2.04 million from 2,002 locations for eighth place and Soli Deo Gloria Releasing's Nefarious, which started out with an estimated $1.33 million from 933 locations for tenth place. For what it's worth, Nefarious arguably had the more impressive start of the two films, given the lower location count and that Nefarious represented the first release for new distributor Soli Deo Gloria Releasing.

On the platform front, A24's much buzzed about Beau Is Afraid had a noteworthy platform launch with an estimated $320,396 from 4 locations in NY/LA. That gave the Ari Aster directed film starring Joaquin Phoenix an impressive per-location average of $80,099 for the frame. Beau Is Afraid had the second best platform launch since the re-opening of domestic theatres, behind only the $345,157 4 location launch of Licorice Pizza back in November of 2021. Beau Is Afraid also delivered the best platform launch for A24 since the $537,242 5 location launch of Uncut Gems back in December of 2019. Beau Is Afraid is receiving a nationwide expansion this coming Friday (April 21), though the exact scope of that expansion is currently unknown.
