Weekend Estimates Update:
|
Warner Bros. and New Line's Shazam! Fury of the Gods debuted in first place this weekend with an estimated $30.50 million. However, that was towards the lower end of already scaled back consensus
expectations, which had tended to range from the high-twenty millions to $40 million heading into the weekend. Shazam! Fury of the Gods opened well below the $53.51 million start of 2019's Shazam!
(with the opening weekend take for that film increasing to $56.83 million when including early previews). While the original Shazam! went over well with audiences (as well with critics), it also seemed to be a film that
audiences didn't really want a sequel for all that badly (especially if that sequel didn't involve Black Adam). The decision to open Shazam! Fury of the Gods during a very crowded March and mixed critical reviews this time
around didn't help matters either. And of course, Shazam! Fury of the Gods and this year's other scheduled DCEU films (The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom) are having to deal with the
upcoming shift of the DC Extended Universe into the announced DC Universe led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Like its predecessor, Shazam! Fury of the Gods was directed by David F. Sandberg and stars Zachary Levi.
|
Shazam! Fury of the Gods started out with $11.70 million on Friday (which included an estimated $3.4 million from Thursday preview shows that began at 3PM), decreased only 5.6 percent on Saturday to take in $11.05 million
(which points towards there being a significant family component within the audience for the film), and is estimated to decline 29.9 percent on Sunday to gross $7.75 million. The audience breakdown for Shazam! Fury of the Gods skewed 58 percent
male, 42 percent female, 60 percent over 25 and 40 percent under 25; with 22 percent of the film's audience being under 18, which also points towards there being a significant family audience for Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods received a solid B+ rating on CinemaScore, so while the film looks to be going over better with audiences than it has with critics, it also appears that Shazam! Fury of the Gods isn't going over as well with
audiences as Shazam! did (which received a stronger A rating on CinemaScore). Shazam! Fury of the Gods grossed an estimated $2.6 million from domestic IMAX screens this weekend, which represented 8.5 percent of this weekend's overall
take. Next weekend Shazam! Fury of the Gods will have to deal with major new competition from Lionsgate's highly anticipated John Wick: Chapter 4, which will also be taking IMAX screens from Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
|
Internationally, Shazam! Fury of the Gods debuted with an estimated $35.0 million from 77 international markets. That places the film's global launch at $65.5 million. International debuts by market for
Shazam! Fury of the Gods this weekend included $4.4 million in China, $4.0 million in Mexico, $3.0 million, $1.6 million in Indonesia, $1.6 million in Brazil, $1.6 million in Australia, $1.2 million in India, $1.1 million in Italy,
$0.95 million in Germany and $0.95 million in the U.A.E. Shazam! Fury of the Gods grossed an estimated $2.5 million from international IMAX screens, which places the film's global IMAX take at $5.1 million.

Paramount's Scream VI remained strong this weekend with an estimated second place take of $17.50 million. Scream VI declined a sharp 60.6 percent from last weekend. While that was a slightly larger percentage drop
than the 59.3 percent last year's Scream declined in its second weekend, the second weekend take of Scream VI was still 43.3 percent higher than the $12.21 million second weekend gross of Scream (2022)
(in its second weekend, Scream also didn't have to deal with a new release the size of Shazam! Fury of the Gods). With a ten-day start of $76.03 million, Scream VI is running 48.6 percent ahead of the
$51.16 million ten-day gross of Scream (2022) and is already within shouting distance of the $81.64 million final domestic gross of Scream (2022). Internationally, Scream VI took in an estimated $11.3 million this
weekend from 53 international markets. That places the film's international take at $40.0 million and current global haul at $116.0 million.
|
MGM's Creed III placed in third with an estimated $15.37 million. That was down 43.6 percent from last weekend, which was a respectable hold, especially since Creed III lost its IMAX screens to
Shazam! Fury of the Gods this weekend. With a stronger than expected 17-day take of $127.70 million, Creed III has already zoomed past the $115.72 million final domestic gross of 2019's Creed II to easily become the highest
grossing of the three Creed films domestically. This weekend also saw Creed III zoom past the $200 million global mark. Creed III grossed an estimated $12.0 million internationally this weekend, which brings the
film's international take to $96.6 million and global total to $224.3 million. Warner Bros. is handling the international release for Creed III.
|
Sony's 65 took fourth place with an estimated $5.80 million. That represented a sizable, but reasonable, 53.0 percent decline from last weekend's debut. While 65 hasn't gone over well with critics and looks to have
received a mixed reception from audiences, in not having played on premium screens last weekend, the film obviously didn't have to deal with a loss of premium screens this weekend. The ten-day take for 65 stands at a modest
$22.43 million, though that is a bit higher than had widely been expected for the film. Internationally, 65 grossed an estimated $5.1 million this weekend from 54 international markets. Current totals for the film stand at $16.4 million
internationally and at $38.8 million globally.

Places fifth through eighth were fairly bunched together this weekend, with just over $1 million currently separating fifth place from eighth place based on estimates. Disney's Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania declined a
respectable 42.9 percent to round out this weekend's top five with an estimated $4.07 million, Universal's Cocaine Bear was down a solid 38.1 percent to follow closely behind in sixth with an estimated $3.87 million, Lionsgate's
Jesus Revolution decreased just 31.8 percent to place in seventh with an estimated $3.50 million and Focus' Champions declined a respectable 41.2 percent for an eighth place estimated second weekend take of $3.03 million. Respective total domestic grosses stand at $205.83 million for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania through 31 days, at $58.49 million for Cocaine Bear through 24 days, at $45.54 million for Jesus Revolution over the same 24-day span and at $10.59 million for Champions through 10 days.
|
Meanwhile, Disney and 20th Century's Avatar: The Way of Water was down only 27.4 percent to place in ninth with $1.93 million. That brings the film's 94-day domestic total to $678.11 million, which means
Avatar: The Way of Water will soon surpass the $678.83 million final domestic gross of 2018's Avengers: Infinity War to move into seventh place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list. This weekend saw
Avatar: The Way of Water surpass the $2.3 billion global mark. Avatar: The Way of Water has grossed $1.625 billion internationally, for a massive global haul of $2.303 billion. Avatar: The Way of Water is the third highest
grossing film of all-time globally, behind only 2009's Avatar and 2019's Avengers: Endgame.
