Weekend Estimates Update:
|
Paramount's The Lost City took first place this weekend with an impressive estimated debut of $31.00 million. The Aaron Nee and Adam Nee directed adventure comedy starring Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum and
Daniel Radcliffe had been widely expected to open in first place this weekend, but was ultimately able to also slightly outpace the high end of consensus expectations. The Lost City was no doubt powered largely by the teaming up of
Bullock and Tatum, both of whom have been strong draws at the box office for years. The Lost City delivered one of the more impressive debuts for an original film since the re-opening of domestic theatres and opened almost
exactly in-between the respective $28.37 million and $35.02 million starts of last year's Free Guy and Jungle Cruise. In addition to being important as an original film, the opening weekend performance of
The Lost City this weekend was also noteworthy due in part to being driven by adult females (a demo that has been relatively more hesitant to return to theatres since re-opening). The audience breakdown for The Lost City
skewed 56 percent female, 44 percent male, 53 percent under 35 and 47 percent over 35.
|
The Lost City started out with $11.55 million on Friday (which included an estimated $2.50 million from Thursday preview shows that began at 4PM and another $0.75 million from select preview shows from the previous Saturday, Tuesday & Wednesday),
increased an encouraging 2 percent on Saturday to gross $11.80 million and is estimated to decrease 35 percent on Sunday to take in $7.65 million. On the average, critical reviews for The Lost City have been good, but not great
and the film looks to be going over similarly with audiences after receiving a solid B+ rating on CinemaScore. Going forward, in addition to benefiting from its good critical reviews and good word of mouth, The Lost City should
also benefit from serving as an alternative choice to upcoming high profile releases such as Sony's Morbius (April 1), Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (April 8) and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (April 15).
Sandra Bullock in particular also has a long history of films that have displayed strong holding power at the box office. Internationally, The Lost City grossed an estimated $3.7 million from 16 select international markets this weekend. That
places the film's current global total at $34.7 million.
|
After leading the box office each of the past three weekends, Warner's The Batman claimed second place this weekend with an estimated $20.50 million. That represented the second largest fourth weekend
gross since re-opening (behind only Spider-Man: No Way Home). The Batman declined 44 percent from last weekend, which was a respectable percentage hold, especially since the film lost a sizable amount of its average
showtimes per location this weekend as a result of The Lost City entering the marketplace. The 24-day total for The Batman stands at an impressive $331.95 million. The Batman grossed an estimated $2.2 million from
domestic IMAX screens this weekend, which brings the film's domestic IMAX total to $31.5 million.
|
Internationally, The Batman grossed an estimated $25.0 million this weekend from 76 international markets. That brings the film's international total to $340.9 million and current global haul to
$672.9 million. International totals through Sunday for The Batman include $47.4 million in the United Kingdom, $28.0 million in Mexico, $24.1 million in Australia, $22.2 million in France, $20.2 million in Brazil,
$17.9 million in China, $15.4 million in Germany, $10.5 million in Spain, $10.3 million in Italy, $9.3 million in Saudi Arabia, $8.4 million in Japan and $7.5 million in South Korea. With an additional $0.80 million from international
IMAX screens this weekend, respective current IMAX totals for The Batman stand at $21.2 million internationally and $52.7 million globally.

Sarigama Cinemas' release of the long-awaited RRR - Rise Roar Revolt was off to a terrific third place start this weekend with an estimated $9.50 million. RRR played in a semi-wide 1,200 locations
this weekend, which gave the film a healthy per-location average $7,917 for the frame (especially when considering that the 182-minute run-time of RRR limited the average amount of showings for the film at many locations this weekend).
RRR, a period action drama from India, was directed by S. S. Rajamouli, director of the popular Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017). As Rajamouli's follow-up to Baahubali 2,
anticipation for RRR had been relatively high to begin with and that anticipation seems to have only been heightened after the film's release had been delayed multiple times.
|
While RRR - Rise Roar Revolt couldn't quite match the $10.43 million break-out start of Baahubali 2 domestically, it hadn't been expected to heading into the weekend and exceeded expectations in its
own right, on its way to delivering the second largest opening weekend ever domestically for a film from India. It should be noted that RRR received a significant boost this weekend from tickets being sold at a premium price and
in the opening weekend comparison with Baahubali 2 that RRR opened significantly wider than Baahubali 2 did (425 locations). RRR also benefited this weekend from Thursday essentially serving as a full extra
day for the film at many locations (though that was also the case for Baahubali 2: The Conclusion back in 2017). RRR - Rise Roar Revolt grossed an estimated $0.75 million from 90 domestic IMAX screens this weekend, which
represented 7.9 percent of this weekend's overall domestic gross.

Sony's Uncharted was down one spot from last weekend to place in fourth with an estimated $5.00 million. While Uncharted didn't hold up as well this weekend as it did each of the past two weekends
(due in part to the new competition from The Lost City), the film still experienced a solid hold this weekend by declining 36 percent. With a 38-day domestic total of $133.55 million, the current total gross to opening weekend
ratio for Uncharted stands at a healthy 3.04 to 1. Internationally, Uncharted grossed an estimated $7.7 million this weekend from 55 international markets. Respective totals for Uncharted stand at $223.9 million
internationally and at $357.5 million globally.
|
Crunchyroll and Funimation's Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was down three spots from last weekend's break-out second place start to round out this weekend's top five with an estimated $4.58 million. While
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 declined a very sharp 75 percent from last weekend, it is commonplace for high-profile anime films to experience similarly sharp second weekend percentage declines; regardless of the film's reception
(Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has gone over very well with critics and audiences alike). In the bigger picture, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has grossed a stronger than expected $27.72 million through ten days of release. That already ranks
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 as the fifth highest grossing anime film ever domestically and the film will soon surpass the $30.71 million total gross of 2019's Dragon Ball Super: Broly to move into fourth place on the list. After
experiencing a sharp 69.5 percent second weekend decline of its own, last year's Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train was able to stabilize after its second weekend of release. Going forward, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will hope to
do the same.
|
As for some of this weekend's other holdovers, A24's X declined 48 percent (which is very respectable for a horror film in its second weekend) to claim sixth place with an estimated $2.23 million, while
United Artists Releasing and MGM's Dog decreased a similar 47 percent (as a result of the new direct competition from The Lost City) to follow closely behind in seventh place with an estimated $2.11 million. Respective total
grosses stand at $57.87 million for Dog through 38 days and at $8.30 million for X through 10 days.
|
Meanwhile, Sony's Spider-Man: No Way Home was down a solid 36 percent to take eighth place this weekend with an estimated $2.00 million and in the process became only the third film to surpass the
$800 million unadjusted domestic milestone; joining 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens and 2019's Avengers: Endgame. The 101-day domestic gross for Spider-Man: No Way Home stands at $800.59 million. With a current
international total of $1.088 billion, Spider-Man: No Way Home has grossed $1.888 billion to date globally.
|
Also of note this weekend is A24's Everything Everywhere All At Once, which was off to an exceptional start in platform release with an estimated $509,659 from just 10 locations in New York, Los Angeles and
San Francisco. That gave Everything Everywhere All At Once an impressive per-location average of $50,966 for the frame. Everything Everywhere All At Once was directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert
(collectively known as Daniels) and stars Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu and James Hong. Buzz around Everything Everywhere All At Once has grown rapidly thanks in part to the film's extremely strong critical reception.
Everything Everywhere All At Once will expand to select additional cities this coming Friday (April 1), before expanding into nationwide release the following week on April 8.
|
In international box office news, this weekend saw Universal's Ambulance gross an estimated $6.7 million from 58 international markets and fellow Universal release The Bad Guys gross an estimated
$6.5 million from 37 international markets. After two frames of international release for each film, respective current international totals stand at $16.8 million for The Bad Guys and at $12.8 million for Ambulance.
Domestically, Ambulance is scheduled to open on April 8 and The Bad Guys is scheduled to open two weeks later on April 22.
