After horror films dominated the box office last weekend, horror comedy will look to lead the way this weekend with the release of Paramount's Scary Movie. The sixth installment of the Scary Movie franchise was directed by Michael Tiddes and sees the return of Marlon Wayans and Shawn Wayans to the Scary Movie series for the first time since 2001's Scary Movie 2. Scary Movie (2026) also stars Anna Faris and Regina Hall. Scary Movie is playing in 3,490 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM. With thirteen years having passed since the release of the last Scary Movie film (2013's Scary Movie 5), it seems like a great time to re-launch the Scary Movie franchise, especially given Paramount's re-launch of the Scream franchise (in 2022) and the current popularity of horror movies in general. Critical reviews for Scary Movie have been mostly negative, but the film should prove to be critic-proof at the box office, at least on opening weekend. The biggest question mark for Scary Movie this weekend is whether or not the break-out horror film combination of Backrooms and Obsession could cut into a potential break-out start for Scary Movie. The largest opening weekend ever for the Scary Movie franchise is the $48.11 million start of Scary Movie 3 (way back in October of 2003). It feels reasonable for Scary Movie to top that mark, especially with the advantage of 23 years of ticket price inflation (and the return of Marlon Wayans and Shawn Wayans). BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Scary Movie will have a very successful launch this weekend with $51.5 million.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is Amazon MGM Studios' Masters of the Universe. The second theatrical adaptation of the Masters of the Universe property was directed by Travis Knight and stars Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man. Masters of the Universe also stars Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, Jared Leto and Idris Elba. Masters of the Universe is opening in 3,677 locations this weekend, will be playing on IMAX screens (Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu will keep some IMAX showtimes this weekend) and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM (Masters of the Universe also had early access screenings on Wednesday). With Masters of the Universe being based on a property that saw its popularity peak back in the 1980s, the film will likely be off to a relatively modest start this weekend for an expensive, high-profile fantasy adaptation. But there is hope that Masters of the Universe could hold up better than usual, especially given the film's solid critical reviews. Look for Masters of the Universe to debut in second place this weekend with $31.5 million.

Meanwhile, the pair of break-out low-budget horror films that led the way last weekend; A24's Backrooms and Focus' Obsession, will both have a continued major presence at the box office this weekend. Last weekend saw Backrooms exceed all expectations with a debut of $81.40 million (which was easily the largest opening weekend ever for A24) and Obsession increase 14.3 percent to place in second with $27.40 million (marking the second consecutive weekend increase for the film). As massive as Backrooms was last weekend, the opening weekend rush-out of fans of the Backrooms YouTube series will likely lead to a very sharp second weekend percentage decline this weekend. This past December, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 declined 69.7 percent to gross $19.39 million in its second weekend and that could prove to be a good second weekend comparison for Backrooms this weekend (especially given how heavily Backrooms skewed towards teens and young adults). With Obsession already having proven that it can hold up extremely well against Backrooms, the film is likely to hold up extremely well against Scary Movie this weekend as well. With that said, it may prove difficult for Obsession to increase yet again this weekend (the film's $5.09 million Wednesday performance was down a slim 10.1 percent from the previous Wednesday), but obviously a small decrease from last weekend would represent another amazing hold for the film. With all factors considered, it could be an extremely close race for third place this weekend between Backrooms and Obsession. A 68.1 percent decrease would give Backrooms a second weekend take of $26.0 million; while a decline of 8.7 percent would transfer into a fourth weekend gross of $25.0 million for Obsession. That would likely bring total domestic grosses through Sunday to roughly $135 million for Backrooms and just past $151 million for Obsession.

Also of note this weekend is Fathom Entertainment's release of The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act. The theatrical release includes the final two episodes of The Amazing Digital Circus viral internet animated series. The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act is receiving a wide release this weekend and will essentially be playing all day at some locations on Thursday. As a result, it remains to be seen whether or not Thursday's performance is included in the film's weekend gross (as a preview gross) or is officially counted separately (as a daily gross). Due in part to the series' fanbase being young adult heavy, The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act is expected to be extremely front-loaded towards Thursday. The breakout performance of Backrooms with younger adults will also make it tougher for The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act to expand beyond its already pre-existing fanbase. As far as opening weekend goes, a good comparison for The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act could prove to be Fathom's re-issue of Coraline back in August of 2024 (that re-issue started on a Thursday and the film had respective three-day and four-day grosses of $9.83 million and $12.75 million), though again, The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act is expected to be far more front-loaded towards opening weekend. Including Thursday, The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act could start out with $14.0 million through Sunday.

Further down on this weekend's box office chart will be Disney's Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and Lionsgate's Michael. Last weekend The Mandalorian and Grogu declined a very sharp 70.1 percent to land in third place with $24.45 million, while Michael finally experienced a bit of relative slowing by decreasing a still respectable 42.5 percent to place in fourth with $11.87 million. Both films should hold up somewhat better this weekend, though The Mandalorian and Grogu likely won't experience significant stabilizing, due in part to having to share IMAX screens with Masters of the Universe this weekend. Look for Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu to fall a sharp 61.1 percent to gross $9.5 million and for Michael to ease a solid 36.8 percent to take in $7.5 million for the frame. That would bring total domestic grosses to roughly $354 million for Michael and $155 million for Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.
