Disney and Pixar's Hoppers will look to lead the domestic box office for a second consecutive frame this weekend. Last weekend, Hoppers got off to a strong start with $45.35 million. Hoppers should be headed for a strong second weekend hold this weekend, thanks in part to very strong critical reviews and strong audience reception (Hoppers received an A rating on CinemaScore). Other factors that will help out holding power for Hoppers going forward are the film being a non-sequel and the rest of March providing an opportunity for family audiences to catch the film before before Universal's highly anticipated The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrives in the marketplace on April 1. Last month, fellow original animated film GOAT declined 38.0 percent in its second weekend (to gross $16.86 million). Hoppers could very well experience a second weekend percentage hold similar to that of GOAT. Look for Hoppers to decline just 37.2 percent this weekend for a second weekend haul of $28.5 million.
Arriving in theatres this weekend is Universal's Reminders of Him. The theatrical adaptation of the popular Colleen Hoover novel of the same name was directed by Vanessa Caswill and stars Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers. Reminders of Him is playing in 3,402 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM. Critical reviews for Reminders of Him have been mixed, but more so positive than negative. This past October the theatrical adaptation of Hoover's Regretting You debuted with $13.69 million and displayed healthy holding power to go on to gross $48.85 million domestically. It appears that Reminders of Him will be a stronger performer at the box office than Regretting You was, at least over opening weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Reminders of Him will open in second place this weekend with a promising $17.5 million.
After setting a franchise opening weekend record the prior weekend, last weekend Paramount's Scream 7 fell a sharp 73.3 percent to place in second with $17.01 million. Built-in front-loading, largely negative critical reviews, mixed word of mouth and the loss of IMAX screens all took a toll on Scream 7 last weekend. With that said, Scream 7 should stabilize this weekend (perhaps significantly so), as the film recovers from losing its IMAX screens. In addition, Scream 7 should receive a boost on Friday from this Friday being Friday the 13th and an additional boost from this weekend providing audiences a chance to catch Scream 7 before Amazon MGM Studios' highly anticipated Project Hail Mary enters the marketplace next weekend. Scream 7 could decline a very respectable 44.7 percent this weekend to place in third with $9.4 million. That would bring the total domestic gross for Scream 7 within shouting distance of the $108.39 million final domestic gross of 2023's Scream VI.
Also opening in wide release this weekend is A24's Undertone. The low-budget R-rated horror film was directed by Ian Tuason and stars Nina Kiri. Undertone is playing in an estimated 2,500 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 4PM. On the average, critical reviews for the film have been good. There seems to be a decent amount of buzz surrounding Undertone, and like Scream 7, Undertone is also likely to receive a boost on Friday from Friday the 13th. A good opening weekend comparison for Undertone could prove to be A24's Bring Her Back, which opened with $7.19 million last May. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Undertone will start out in fourth place this weekend with $8.0 million.
