In recent years, it has been difficult for non-sequel animated films to truly break out at the box office, but Disney and Pixar's Hoppers will look to change that trend upon arriving in theatres this weekend. The computer animated Hoppers was directed by Daniel Chong and has gone over extremely well with critics. Hoppers will be playing in 4,000 locations this weekend, is splitting IMAX screens with Warner Bros.'s The Bride! and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 2PM (Hoppers also had early access screenings this past Saturday). Back in March of 2020, just before the temporary closing of theatres due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Disney and Pixar's Onward debuted with $39.12 million. It feels like Hoppers should be able to surpass that figure, especially with the marketing for Hoppers coming across as very family friendly. And given the film's terrific critical reception and that Hoppers is likely to go over very well with audiences as well, Hoppers will have a strong chance of holding up well throughout the month of March, before Universal's highly anticipated The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrives in the marketplace on April 1. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Hoppers will debut with a very promising $46.0 million this weekend.
Last weekend Paramount's Scream 7 exceeded all expectations with a franchise best debut of $63.62 million. However, after the film's exceptional debut, midweek grosses for Scream 7 have been relatively underwhelming this week. The film's midweek performance points to word of mouth for Scream 7 not being out of this world and horror sequels in general are typically quite front-loaded to begin with. Scream 7 also losing its IMAX screens this weekend won't help matters either. With that said, last weekend's starting point for Scream 7 was so high that the film should have a continued significant presence at the box office this weekend, and it's also still possible that Scream 7 could prove to be especially weekend heavy. Back in March of 2023, Scream VI declined 61.0 percent in its second weekend to gross $17.33 million. Scream 7 should experience a larger second weekend percentage decline than Scream VI did, but Scream 7 might still be able to register a slightly larger second weekend gross than Scream VI did. Scream 7 could decline a sharp 72.5 percent this weekend to take second place with $17.5 million.
Also opening in theatres this weekend is Warner Bros.'s The Bride! The Maggie Gyllenhaal directed film is a reimagining of Bride of Frankenstein and stars Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale. The Bride! is playing in 3,304 locations this weekend, is splitting IMAX screens with Hoppers and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 3PM. Unfortunately, there just doesn't appear to be much anticipation for The Bride! Opening only one week after Scream 7 isn't helping matters for The Bride! and neither are the film's somewhat surprisingly mixed critical reviews. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that The Bride! will debut in third place this weekend with a fairly modest $11.5 million.
As they enter their respective fourth weekends of release, Sony's GOAT and Warner Bros.'s Wuthering Heights should take fourth and fifth place this weekend. Last weekend GOAT declined just 28.8 percent to place in second with $12.00 million and the film's midweek holds have been terrific this week. But with that said, GOAT will obviously still take a hit this weekend from the new direct competition from Hoppers, though perhaps not a massive hit. Wuthering Heights is coming off of a third place performance in which the film declined 52.1 percent to gross $6.70 million. With last weekend's hold having been affected by both the film losing its IMAX screens and the break-out debut of Scream 7, Wuthering Heights should be able to stabilize at least slightly this weekend. Look for GOAT to decrease 41.7 percent to gross $7.0 million this weekend and for Wuthering Heights to decline a similar 43.3 percent to take in $3.8 million for the frame.
