After exceeding all expectations last weekend with respective three-day and four-day second place starts of $27.20 million and $35.12 million, Sony's GOAT is likely to move into first place at the domestic box office this weekend. In addition to last weekend's stronger than expected performance, the computer animated GOAT held up well as the holiday weekend went on. On Tuesday and Wednesday, GOAT has continued to be a solid midweek performer for a family film at this time of year and the film looks to be holding onto a very high percentage of its average showtimes per location from last weekend. GOAT also looks to be going over very well with audiences after receiving a strong A rating on CinemaScore. Being a non-sequel and this weekend providing family audiences another chance to catch GOAT before Disney and Pixar's Hoppers arrives in the marketplace on March 6 are additional factors that should help GOAT have a very strong hold this weekend, even with last weekend's performance having been inflated a bit by Valentine's Day. GOAT could decline just 32.0 percent from last weekend's three-day performance to take first place this weekend with $18.5 million. That would move the film's total domestic gross very close to the $60 million domestic mark.
This weekend's strongest new opener is widely expected to be Lionsgate & Kingdom Story Company's I Can Only Imagine 2. The follow-up to 2018 break-out hit I Can Only Imagine was directed by Andrew Erwin and Brent McCorkle and sees the return of I Can Only Imagine star John Michael Finley. I Can Only Imagine 2 is playing is 3,105 locations this weekend, has Thursday preview shows beginning at 2PM and also had early access screenings on Valentine's Day. Back in March of 2018, I Can Only Imagine opened with $17.11 million (from only 1,629 locations) and went on to gross $83.48 million domestically. Even with the much wider opening weekend launch this time around, it will likely be difficult for I Can Only Imagine 2 to catch lightning in a bottle like I Can Only Imagine did at the box office. With that said, I Can Only Imagine 2 is a bit of a wild card at the box office and despite being a sequel, could still prove to have a lengthy run at the box office beyond opening weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a promising debut of $13.3 million for I Can Only Imagine 2 this weekend.
Last weekend's debut for Warner Bros.'s Wuthering Heights was a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, Wuthering Heights opened below consensus expectations, but on the other hand the film still had a solid first place start (when disregarding expectations), with respective three-day and four-day grosses of $32.80 million and $37.50 million. A big factor in Wuthering Heights opening below expectations last weekend was that the film didn't perform as strongly as expected on Valentine's Day Saturday. Instead of playing more like a date night film, Wuthering Heights appears to be playing more like a girls night out film. That factor could help this weekend's second weekend hold for Wuthering Heights a bit, though it will also likely lead to Wuthering Heights being relatively midweek heavy going forward. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Wuthering Heights will decline 60.4 percent this weekend to gross $13.0 million. That would likely place Wuthering Heights in a close race for second place this weekend with I Can Only Imagine 2 and place the domestic total for Wuthering Heights just shy of $59 million.
Last weekend saw Amazon MGM Studios' Crime 101 debut on the very high end of consensus expectations with respective third place three-day and four-day starts of $14.25 million and $16.02 million. However, Crime 101 proved to be the most Valentine's Day heavy of last weekend's four new wide releases and the film's B rating on CinemaScore points towards word of mouth being mixed to good as opposed to being great. With that in mind, Crime 101 could be headed for a respectable, but significant second weekend decline of 53.0 percent to place in fourth this weekend with $6.7 million. Meanwhile, Disney and 20th Century's Send Help, which passed the $50 million domestic mark on Wednesday, could decline a very respectable 43.7 percent from last weekend's Valentine's Day inflated performance to round out this weekend's top five with $5.0 million.
