After a very slow frame last weekend, the domestic box office will look to pick back up somewhat this weekend, thanks in part to the arrival of four new wide releases. Disney / 20th Century's Send Help should be the strongest of the four new films in question. The Sam Raimi directed thriller stars Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien. Send Help is opening in 3,475 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM (the film also had early access screenings this past Saturday). Critical reviews for Send Help have been very strong, which could help the film out this weekend and could be an early sign of Send Help potentially having a lengthy run after this weekend. As for this weekend, BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Send Help will debut in first place with $17.5 million.
Another significant box office story this weekend is shaping up to be the wide release of Iron Lung. The sci-fi horror film based on the video game of the same name was directed, written, produced by and starts popluar YouTube personality Mark Edward Fischbach (Markiplier). Markiplier is releasing the film independently, with aid from Centurion Film Service. Thanks to Markiplier's online popularity, there are reports of strong pre-sales for the film, though just how well Iron Lung is able to perform this weekend, beyond its pre-sales remains to be seen. Thursday preview shows for Iron Lung begin at 5PM. As of publishing, critical reviews for Iron Lung have yet to start appearing. While the film could prove to be a bit of a wild card this weekend, BoxOfficeReport is predicting a $12.0 million second place start for Iron Lung.
Beyond Send Help and Iron Lung, places third through seventh could be extremely close to one another this weekend. New releases Melania and Shelter and holdovers Zootopia 2, Mercy and Avatar: Fire and Ash could finish within $1 million of one another this weekend, if not closer.
Disney's Zootopia 2 in particular could hold up extremely well this weekend. With last weekend's Saturday and Sunday grosses in general having been negatively affected by both the winter storm that hit the eastern half of the United Sates and Sunday's NFL Conference Championship games, Zootopia 2 holding onto the vast majority of its locations and showtimes from last weekend and no new family films entering the marketplace this weekend, there is a perfect storm for Zootopia 2 to have a great hold this weekend. Zootopia 2 could potentially even see an increase over last weekend's performance. An increase of 13.2 percent from last weekend would transfer into $6.0 million for Zootopia 2 this weekend.
Amazon MGM Studios will look to have two films within the five film mix in question: Mercy (in its second weekend of release) and Melania (in its first weekend of release). Mercy is coming off of a so-so $10.81 million start last weekend and normally would experience a sharp second weekend decline in a more typical situation. But with last weekend's debut having been deflated, Mercy looking to hold onto its IMAX showtimes this weekend and the film also looking to be going at least somewhat better with audiences than it has with critics, Mercy could be headed for a very sold second weekend hold. Melania, a Brett Ratner directed documentary on First Lady Melania Trump is opening in 1,778 locations this weekend (there are no Thursday preview shows for the film). While Melania isn't expected to perform well with its relatively high overall cost for a documentary in mind, it appears that the film will be off to a solid start by political documentary standards (without taking into account cost). Mercy could decrease 45.4 percent from last weekend to gross $5.9 million and Melania could take in a similar $5.8 million this weekend.
Black Bear's Shelter and Disney / 20th Century's Avatar: Fire and Ash should also be in the five-film mix for places third through seventh this weekend. Shelter, a Jason Statham led action thriller, directed by Ric Roman Waugh, likely won't perform as strong as usual for a Statham led action film, due in part to Black Bear being a fairly new distributor. Shelter, which has gone over fairly well with critics, could debut with $5.5 million this weekend. As for Avatar: Fire and Ash, the blockbuster sequel should rebound this weekend on the heels of last weekend's sharp, but understandable 55.8 percent decline (to gross $6.41 million). Avatar: Fire and Ash could decrease a slim 15.7 percent to take in $5.4 million this weekend.
