Disney and 20th Century's Avatar: Fire and Ash shouldn't have a problem leading the domestic box office for a fourth consecutive frame this weekend. Last weekend, Avatar: Fire and Ash declined a solid 34.3 percent to gross $41.42 million. With the holidays now behind us, Avatar: Fire and Ash will likely have a larger percentage decline this weekend than the film had last weekend, but should still be able to have a respectable hold, especially with Avatar: Fire and Ash holding onto IMAX screens this weekend. Look for Avatar: Fire and Ash to decline 40.8 percent from last weekend to take first place this weekend with $24.5 million. That would leave Avatar: Fire and Ash a few million away from reaching the $350 million domestic mark.
Moving beyond first place this weekend, four different films could potentially end up in second place for the frame. The best odds for second place this weekend may actually belong to Lionsgate's The Housemaid. The Housemaid is coming off of an exceptional hold last weekend, which saw the film decline a very slim 1.4 percent to take third place with $15.10 million. The Housemaid isn't the first film featuring Sydney Sweeney to display exceptional holding power at the box office, as two years ago at this time Anyone But You was having an impressive run of its own. With continued momentum, continued good word of mouth and the film holding onto a high percentage of its average showtimes per location from last weekend, The Housemaid could decrease just 22.5 percent to gross $11.7 million this weekend.
This weekend's widest new release is Paramount's Primate. The R-rated horror film about a chimpanzee gone mad was directed by Johannes Roberts, and stars Johnny Sequoyah, Jessica Alexander and Troy Kotsur. Primate is playing in 2,964 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 7PM. On the average, critical reviews for the film have been good, but not great. In February of last year, NEON's The Monkey debuted with $14.02 million. It feels like Primate likely won't match that figure, but the film's debut might not be all that much lower than that of The Monkey either, especially since early January is usually a good time to release horror films. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Primate will open with a solid $11.5 million this weekend.
Like The Housemaid, Disney's Zootopia 2 also had a terrific hold last weekend by declining only 2.5 percent to gross $19.38 million in its sixth frame. As well as Zootopia 2 held up during the holidays, the blockbuster animated sequel is likely to experience some slowing this weekend, as high-profile animated holdovers tend to experience significant slowing the weekend after New Year's weekend (before usually re-stabilizing over the Martin Luther King holiday frame the following week). Last year over this frame, Disney's Moana 2 declined 47.5 percent to gross $6.54 million. This time around, Zootopia 2 could slow by 44.8 percent to gross $10.7 million this weekend.
Also arriving in theatres this weekend is Lionsgate's Greenland 2: Migration. The follow-up to 2020's Greenland, sees the return of director Ric Roman Waugh, the return of stars Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin, and also stars Roman Griffin Davis. The original Greenland film had been scheduled to open theatrically domestically, but eventually arrived via streaming instead due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Greenland seems to have a fairly good reputation among audiences, but it probably isn't really a film that audiences truly wanted a sequel for either. Mixed critical reviews this time around also won't help maters. At the same time, star Gerard Butler has a long history of films that have over-performed at the box office, a trend which can't be discounted when it comes to Greenland 2: Migration. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a debut of $9.5 million for Greenland 2: Migration this weekend.
Meanwhile, in their respective third weekends of wide release, A24's Marty Supreme and Sony's Anaconda will likely claim sixth and seventh place this weekend. Last weekend Marty Supreme declined 29.1 percent to gross $12.57 million and Anaconda decreased by a similar 31.0 percent to take in $10.01 million. Both films will likely experience additional slowing this weekend, more so in the case of Anaconda, as that film will probably be hit a bit more by this weekend's new wide releases. Look for Marty Supreme to decrease 38.8 percent this weekend to gross $7.7 million and for Anaconda to decline by 45.0 percent to follow with $5.5 million.
