Weekend Predictions Article Update:

With not much expected from this weekend's new wide releases, last weekend's top three films shouldn't have a problem occupying the top three spots at the box office again this weekend. Disney's Zootopia 2 is coming off of a strong second weekend performance in which the blockbuster computer animated sequel declined a reasonable 56.7 percent to take second place with $43.43 million. Zootopia 2 had a better second weekend percentage hold than last year's Moana 2 did (that film had a second weekend decline of 63.3 percent to gross $51.29 million) and it appears that Zootopia 2 will have also have a better third weekend hold than Moana 2 did, perhaps significantly so (Moana 2 declined 48.3 percent in its third weekend to gross $26.50 million). BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Zootopia 2 will decline 34.4 percent this weekend to return to first pace with $28.5 million. This weekend will also see Zootopia 2 zoom past the $1 billion global mark (the film has grossed an estimated $972.3 million globally through Wednesday).

Universal's Five Nights at Freddy's 2 exceeded all expectations last weekend with an impressive first place debut of $64.01 million. While that wasn't quite as strong as the $80.00 million start of 2023's Five Nights at Freddy's; Five Nights at Freddy's 2 hadn't been expected to open anywhere near its predecessor. In addition, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is showing signs of potentially having a better second weekend percentage hold than Five Nights at Freddy's had. Opening in December instead of October and Five Nights at Freddy's 2 not being released day-and-date like Five Nights at Freddy's was (theatrically and via streaming on Peacock) are two factors that could help the second weekend hold of Five Nights at Freddy's 2. With that said, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 should still experience a sharp decline of its own this weekend, due to the immense rush-out of the film's built-in fanbase. Five Nights at Freddy's 2 could decline 68.8 percent this weekend to place in second with $20.0 million.

Fellow Universal release Wicked: For Good passed the $300 million domestic mark earlier this week, but at the same time the blockbuster musical is also coming off of a concerning second weekend hold in which the film declined 71.9 percent to place in third with $17.36 million. Wicked: For Good will no doubt experience some stabilization this weekend, but it doesn't appear that the film will come anywhere close to matching the 37.9 percent fourth weekend decline of last year's Wicked (when that film grossed $22.65 million). Instead, look for Wicked: For Good to decline a sizable 53.9 percent to hold steady in third place with $8.0 million.

As mentioned, not much is expected of this weekend's new wide releases: Disney and 20th Century's Ella McCay, Universal's 25th Anniversary re-issue of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Cineverse and Iconic Events Releasing's Silent Night, Deadly Night. Location counts for the weekend are 2,500 locations for Ella McCay, 2,250 locations for How the Grinch Stole Christmas and 1,643 locations for Silent Night, Deadly Night. BoxOfficeReport is predicting respective weekend grosses of $3.1 million for Ella McCay, $2.6 million for the re-issue of How the Grinch Stole Christmas and $2.1 million for Silent Night, Deadly Night.
