After last weekend's much needed strong debut from Universal's Wicked: For Good, the box office will look to keep up the momentum this weekend with the release of Disney's highly anticipated Zootopia 2. The computer animated sequel to 2016's Zootopia was directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, and features a vocal cast that includes Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman and Ke Huy Quan. Back in March of 2016, the original Zootopia opened with $75.06 million and went on to gross $341.27 million domestically (without adjusting for nine years of ticket price inflation). Zootopia 2 is playing in 4,000 locations beginning on Wednesday and will be splitting IMAX screens with Wicked: For Good over the Thanksgiving holiday frame. On Tuesday, Zootopia 2 grossed a very encouraging $10.2 million from preview shows that began early at 2PM. That was just 26.1 percent behind the $13.8 million Tuesday preview gross of last year's Moana 2, which ended up with respective three-day weekend and five-day Thanksgiving holiday grosses of $139.79 million and $225.44 million. Zootopia 2 should be able to hold up similarly to Moana 2 over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday frame last year, and could prove to be slightly more weekend heavy, especially with Zootopia 2 going over far better with critics than Moana 2 did. Zootopia 2 could be headed for respective three-day weekend and five-day Thanksgiving holiday grosses of $101.0 million and $161.0 million. That would represent the second largest Thanksgiving weekend opening ever (behind only Moana 2 and well ahead of 2013's Frozen).
Last weekend saw Wicked: For Good arrive in theatres with a domestic start of $147.00 million. While that was 30.7 percent higher than the $112.51 million opening weekend performance of Wicked last year, Wicked: For Good is proving to be far more front-loaded than Wicked was, as daily grosses for Wicked: For Good on Monday and Tuesday have already fallen slightly behind the respective first Monday and first Tuesday grosses for Wicked. With that in mind, Wicked: For Good is likely to have a second weekend performance below that of Wicked, which had respective three-day weekend and five-day Thanksgiving holiday grosses of $81.17 million and $118.27 million. At the same time, Wicked: For Good is still likely to go over the $100 million mark for the five-day Thanksgiving frame. Look for Wicked: For Good to gross $71.0 million over the three-day frame (which would represent a sizable 51.7 percent decrease from last weekend) and for the film to gross $104.0 million over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday frame.
With no new non-animated major wide releases entering the marketplace this weekend, Lionsgate's Now You See Me: Now You Don't, Disney / 20th Century's Predator: Badlands and Paramount's The Running Man should all have good holds over Thanksgiving weekend. For the three-day frame, Now You See Me: Now You Don't could decline by just 16.2 percent to gross $7.5 million, Predator: Badlands could decrease by 25.2 percent to gross $4.9 million and The Running Man could slow by 28.3 percent to gross $4.1 million. Respective five-day holiday grosses could come in at $10.8 million for Now You See Me: Now You Don't, at $7.0 million for Predator: Badlands and at $6.0 million for The Running Man.
After Disney's Zootopia 2, this weekend's next widest new release is A24's Eternity, which is opening in a semi-wide 1,384 locations. The David Freyne directed romantic comedy stars Miles Teller, Elizabeth Olsen and Callum Turner. On the average, critical reviews for the film have been good, but not great. Interest in the film appears to be rather modest. Eternity could open with respective three-day weekend and five-day holiday grosses of $2.2 million and $3.3 million.
