This year's holiday moviegoing season kicks off this weekend with the release of Disney and 20th Century's Predator: Badlands. The latest film in the Predator franchise sees the return of director Dan Trachtenberg, who previously directed 2022's Prey and this year's animated Predator: Killer of Killers, the two most recent Predator films (which were both released via streaming on Hulu). Predator: Badlands stars Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. Predator: Badlands is playing in 3,725 locations this weekend, is playing on IMAX screens, is also playing in 3D and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM (the film also had early access screenings on Wednesday). As was the case with both Prey and Predator: Killer of Killers, Predator: Badlands has also gone over well with critics. The most recent Predator film to open in theatres, 2018's The Predator, opened with $24.63 million (in September of 2018) and finished its domestic run with $51.02 million after being quite front-loaded towards opening weekend. There is hope that Predator: Badlands will perform stronger than The Predator did, due in part to goodwill from the especially strong oveall reception to Prey. Opening in an empty marketplace, a PG-13 rating and higher priced 3D and IMAX tickets are other factors that should all help out Predator: Badlands this weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Predator: Badlands will open with a respectable $30.0 million this weekend.
Beyond Predator: Badlands, not much is expected from the rest of the theatrical marketplace this weekend, at least when it comes to overall grosses. Last weekend's top two films; Universal's Black Phone 2 (with $8.32 million) and Paramount's Regretting You (with $7.82 million) are likely to take second and third place this weekend. This time around, Regretting You is likely to finish ahead of Black Phone 2 in the rankings, thanks in part to continued strong holding power for Regretting You and in part to last weekend's Halloween frame having been friendlier to Black Phone 2 than it was to Regretting You. Regretting You could decline just 23.3 percent this weekend to gross $6.0 million, while Black Phone 2 could decrease a solid 36.3 percent to take in $5.3 million.
Sony and Crunchyroll's Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc and Focus' Bugonia could be headed for similar weekend takes to one another this weekend. Last weekend Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc declined 65.5 percent to place in third with $6.21 million (which represented a stronger than usual second weekend percentage hold for an anime film), while Bugonia performed a bit stronger than had been expected by taking fifth place with $5.03 million, upon expanding to wide release. Bugonia has been holding up nicely during the midweek this week and should have the better percentage hold between the two films this weekend. Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc could decline a respectable 48.5 percent from last weekend to gross $3.2 million and Bugonia could have a strong second weekend hold by slowing 38.3 percent to gross a similar $3.1 million.
Four new smaller films opening in wide release will likely occupy most of the bottom half of this weekend's top ten chart. The four films in question are Amazon MGM Studios and Kingdom Story Company's Sarah's Oil (directed by Cyrus Nowrasteh and starring Zachary Levi and Naya Desir-Johnson), MUBI's Die My Love (directed by Lynne Ramsay and starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson), Sony Pictures Classics' Nuremberg (directed by James Vanderbilt and starring Russell Crowe and Rami Malek) and Black Bear Pictures' Christy (directed by David Michôd and starring Sydney Sweeney and Ben Foster). Sarah's Oil, Die My Love and Nuremberg could find themselves closely bunched together at the box office this weekend, while Christy might end up a bit behind the other three films. Sarah's Oil may end up with the highest debut of the four films, thanks in part to opening in 2,410 locations, which is expected to be the largest location count among the four films. BoxOfficeReport is predicting respective opening weekend grosses of $3.0 million for Sarah's Oil, $2.8 million for Die My Love, $2.7 million for Nuremberg and $1.7 million for Christy.
