As we continue to approach the Halloween holiday, Universal and Blumhouse's Black Phone 2 will look to lead the way at the box office this weekend. The R-rated horror sequel is the first follow-up to the 2022 break-out film The Black Phone and sees the return of director Scott Derrickson, as well as the return of stars Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw and Jeremy Davies (and the addition of Demián Bichir to the cast). Black Phone 2 is playing in 3,411 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM. On the average, critical reviews for Black Phone 2 have been good, however, they also haven't been quite as strong as the critical reviews of The Black Phone. The Black Phone debuted with $23.63 million back in June of 2022 and displayed very strong holding power to eventually finish its domestic run with $90.12 million. Black Phone 2 could be in store for a similar debut as The Black Phone, though as a sequel, the film is likely to be more front-loaded towards opening weekend than The Black Phone was. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Black Phone 2 will debut with $25.0 million this weekend.
After debuting in first place last weekend with a so-so $33.24 million, Disney's Tron: Ares will look to take second place this weekend. Although Tron: Ares has received a mixed reception from critics, the film does look to be going over better with audiences after receiving a good B+ rating on CinemaScore. At the same time, there is sure to be built-in front-loading for a fan-driven film like Tron: Ares and in general most high-profile films have been experiencing sharp second weekend percentage declines as of late, as well. Tron: Ares will receive a bit of a boost this weekend from holding onto its IMAX screens. Tron: Ares could decline a sharp, but reasonable 63.9 percent to take in $12.0 million this weekend.
Also opening in wide release this weekend is Lionsgate's Good Fortune. The R-rated comedy is directed by Aziz Ansari and stars Ansari, Seth Rogen, Keanu Reeves, Keke Palmer and Sandra Oh. Good Fortune is playing in 2,990 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 2PM. On the average, critical reviews for Good Fortune have been good. The film's ensemble cast, especially Reeves, should help Good Fortune have a presence at the box office this weekend. Good Fortune could get off to a similar start as fellow R-rated comedy Roofman, which debuted with $8.11 million last weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Good Fortune will open a tad higher, with a third place start of $8.5 million this weekend.
Speaking of Paramount and Miramax's Roofman, that film is likely to find itself in a very close battle for fourth place this weekend with Warner Bros.'s One Battle After Another. Last weekend, Roofman was able to debut towards the higher end of consensus expectations to place ahead of One Battle After Another in last weekend's rankings. Given that One Battle After Another declined a solid 38.2 percent last weekend while losing its IMAX screens (to gross $6.80 million for the frame), the critically acclaimed film should be able to hold up at least a bit better this weekend. That would likely give One Battle After Another the slight edge over Roofman, which should experience a larger percentage decline as a film in its second weekend of release. One Battle After Another could decline a solid 35.3 percent this weekend to gross $4.4 million, while Roofman could decrease a respectable 47.0 percent to gross a very similar $4.3 million.
This weekend also sees the release of Angel Studios' Truth & Treason. The historical drama set in Germany during World War II was directed by Matt Whitaker and stars Ewan Horrocks and Ferdinand McKay. Truth & Treason is playing in 2,088 locations this weekend. Last November, the Angel Studios released World War II era film Bonhoeffer debuted with $5.05 million. Truth & Treason likely won't open quite that high this weekend, but the film could open just ahead of the $2.63 million start of Angel Studios' most recent film, The Senior, last month. Look for Truth & Treason to debut with $3.0 million this weekend.
