It could prove to be a fairly close race for first place at the box office this weekend between Universal's Him (in its first weekend of release) and Sony / Crunchyroll's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle (in its second weekend of release). Him, an R-rated football themed horror film directed by Justin Tipping, stars Marlon Wayans, Tyriq Withers and Julia Fox. Him was produced by Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw Productions, with Peele being one of the film's producers. Him is opening in 3,168 locations this weekend, is splitting IMAX screens with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 2PM. Critical reviews have been largely negative for Him, which could prove to limit break-out potential for the film. Him arriving so soon in the marketplace after the dual break-out performances of The Conjuring: Last Rites and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle the past two weeks will also limit potential demand for Him. With that said, there does still appear to be enough opening weekend demand for Him to get off to a respectable start this weekend, especially with the film's modest price-tag and original concept in mind. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Him will debut with $19.5 million this weekend.

Sony and Crunchyroll's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle is coming off of a historic opening weekend performance of $70.61 million, which easily represented the largest debut ever for an anime film in North America. In addition to the record-breaking start, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle also looks to be going over extremely well with audiences after receiving a strong A rating on CinemaScore. Anime films typically experience very sharp second weekend percentage declines at the box office and that is sure to be the case for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle this weekend. Back in April of 2021, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train declined 69.5 percent in its second weekend of release (to gross $6.48 million) and that was with the film adding an additional 318 locations that weekend. With the much larger opening weekend performance of the two, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle is likely to experience a larger second weekend percentage decline than Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train did. But at the same time, the decline may not be all that much larger, thanks in part to the additional buzz generated by the film's record-breaking opening and in part to the potential for some repeat business this weekend (especially given the film's very positive reception). Holding onto some IMAX showtimes will also help as well. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle could decline a sharp 74.5 percent to gross $18.0 million this weekend.

Holdovers will likely occupy third and fourth place this weekend. Last weekend Warner Bros.'s The Conjuring: Last Rites fell a sharp 69.5 percent to land in second place with $25.63 million, while Focus' Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale debuted in third place with a solid $18.11 million. With the film's second weekend decline now out of the way, The Conjuring: Last Rites should stabilize quite a bit from last weekend, though at the same time the film will also have to deal with new direct competition for horror fans from Him. Meanwhile, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is likely to experience a sharp second weekend decline, though the well-received film may be able to hold up a bit better in its second weekend than Downton Abbey: A New Era did back in May of 2022 (when that film declined 63.8 percent to gross $5.79 million). Look for The Conjuring: Last Rites to decline 51.2 percent this weekend to gross $12.5 million and for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale to decrease 58.6 percent to take in $7.5 million.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is Sony's A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. The romance film directed by Kogonada, stars Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell, and also features Kevin Kline and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is opening in 3,342 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 4PM. Despite A Big Bold Beautiful Journey representing Robbie's first film since the historic box office performance of 2023's Barbie, there simply doesn't appear to be much excitement at all for A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. Mixed critical reviews (which have been more negative than positive) won't help matters either for A Big Bold Beautiful Journey this weekend. A Big Bold Beautiful Journey could round out this weekend's top five with a modest debut of $6.5 million.

Lionsgate's The Long Walk is coming off of a respectable $11.70 million fourth place debut last weekend. The R-rated thriller looks to be going over good, but not great, with audiences after receiving a B rating on CinemaScore. The Long Walk looks to be holding onto a high percentage of its average showtimes per locations from last weekend and could also get a bit of a boost this weekend from moviegoers looking to catch the film who have already seen The Conjuring: Last Rites and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train. The Long Walk could decline a respectable 46.2 percent this weekend to place in sixth with $6.3 million.
