We're in store for another major September debut at the box office this weekend with the release of Sony and Crunchyroll's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle. The fourth Demon Slayer theatrical film to date (and the second non-compilation film of the series) was directed by Haruo Sotozaki. The anime film has had a record-breaking performance in Japan, which has no doubt helped increase anticipation for the film in North America. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle is playing in 3,315 locations this weekend, is playing on IMAX screens and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 4PM. Back in April of 2021, the previous non-compilation Demon Slayer film, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train debuted with $21.23 million (from just 1,614 locations) and went on to gross $49.51 million in North America. With much higher anticipation this time around, as well as a much wider launch, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle is set to skyrocket past the start of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle will open with an exceptional $65.0 million this weekend, which would easily represent the largest opening weekend ever for an anime film and also represent the sixth largest opening weekend ever for the month of September.
Last weekend saw Warner Bros.'s The Conjuring: Last Rites soar past all expectations with a massive $84.01 million. The Conjuring: Last Rites passed the $100 million domestic mark on Wednesday and the film looks to be going over fairly well with audiences after receiving a B rating on CinemaScore. The Conjuring: Last Rites will serve as the top alternative this weekend for the portion of moviegoers not interested in seeing Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, though at the same time The Conjuring: Last Rites will take a hit from losing its IMAX screens to Infinity Castle. With five wide releases entering the marketplace this weekend, there was also likely some extra built-in front-loading towards last weekend's performance for The Conjuring: Last Rites. Look for The Conjuring: Last Rites to decline a sharp (but reasonable) 60.7 percent this weekend to place in second with a strong $33.0 million.
Additional wide releases entering the marketplace this weekend include Focus' Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, Lionsgate's The Long Walk and Bleecker Street's Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale was directed by Simon Curtis and represents the third and final film of the Downton Abbey series. Lionsgate's The Long Walk is a thriller directed by Francis Lawrence, which is based on the 1979 Stephen King novel of the same name. And Spinal Tap II: The End Continues is a music mockumentary directed by Rob Reiner, which serves as the long-awaited follow-up to 1984's This Is Spinal Tap. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is playing in 3,694 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at early at 2PM, The Long Walk is playing in 2,845 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 6PM, and Spinal Tap II: The End Continues is playing in 1,920 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 4PM. Potential audience overlap between the three films and the crowded marketplace as a whole, will likely limit potential for all three films this weekend. Down Abbey: The Grand Finale could be the strongest of the three this weekend with a third place start of $19.0 million (that would represent an increase over the $16.00 million start of Downton Abbey: A New Era back in May of 2022), The Long Walk could launch in fourth with $11.5 million and Spinal Tap II: The End Continues could open in fifth place with $4.2 million.
After debuting on the very high end of consensus expectations last weekend with $10.11 million, Disney's release of Hamilton should continue to have a presence at the box office this weekend, despite likely displaying some initial front-loading. Look for Hamilton to decline 60.4 percent this weekend to land in sixth place with $4.0 million.
