Warner Bros. has had tremendous success with horror films throughout 2025 (Sinners, Final Destination Bloodlines and most recently Weapons) and that streak is set to continue in a big way this weekend with the release of The Conjuring: Last Rites. The latest installment of The Conjuring universe was directed by Michael Chaves and sees the return of series stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson. It is believed that The Conjuring: Last Rites will bring some closure to The Conjuring series thus far, before The Conjuring universe potentially moves in a different direction going forward. That sense of closure has no doubt helped increase pre-release anticipation for The Conjuring: Last Rites. The Conjuring: Last Rites is playing in 3,802 locations this weekend, is playing on IMAX screens and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 3PM. Critical reviews for The Conjuring: Last Rites have been mixed, but it feels like the film will be critic-proof, at least on opening weekend (the film's mixed reviews may come more into play after this weekend). In addition, with next weekend's line-up of new films including Lionsgate's The Long Walk, Focus' Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale and especially Sony / Crunchyroll's highly anticipated Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, there should be increased demand to see The Conjuring: Last Rites on opening weekend to begin with. In general, Warner Bros. also has a terrific history of opening horror themed films the weekend after Labor Day weekend, including last year's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, 2023's The Nun II, 2019's IT Chapter Two and 2018's The Nun (which with a debut of $53.81 million currently has the largest opening weekend ever for a film in The Conjuring universe). The Conjuring: Last Rites could debut with a spooky $66.5 million, which would represent the largest opening weekend ever for The Conjuring universe and the largest opening for a Warner Bros. horror film thus far in 2025 (topping the $51.60 million launch of Final Destination Bloodlines back in May).
Also arriving in theatres this weekend is Disney's release of the filmed version of Hamilton. The live recording of the popular Lin-Manuel Miranda written stage musical had originally been intended to be a theatrical release, but was ultimately released on Disney+ back in July of 2020 instead (time flies). With the filmed version of Hamilton, which was directed by Thomas Kail, having been available for over five years, this weekend's release of Hamilton feels more like a re-issue (despite the lack of a prior theatrical release). Hamilton is playing in 1,825 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM. As with the stage musical itself, the filmed version of Hamilton has been beloved by critics. Last weekend the re-issue of Jaws had a three-day start of $8.24 million (from 3,200 locations) and despite not opening as wide, it feels like Hamilton could potentially have a similar opening weekend performance this weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Hamilton will take second place this weekend with $8.4 million.
As they both enter their respective fifth weeks of release, Warner Bros.'s Weapons and Disney's Freakier Friday are likely to take third and fourth place this weekend. Last weekend Weapons returned to first place with respective three-day and four-day grosses of $10.47 million and $13.09 million, while Freakier Friday took fourth place with respective three-day and four-day hauls of $6.75 million and $8.74 million. With the new direct competition from The Conjuring: Last Rites, Weapons will likely experience a larger percentage decline than Freakier Friday will this weekend. Look for Weapons to decline 52.3 percent from last weekend's three-day frame to gross $5.0 million and for Freakier Friday to decrease 40.7 percent to follow closely behind with $4.0 million.
