Warner Bros.'s Weapons will look to move back into first place at the box office this weekend, after the breakout horror film finished behind Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters A Sing-Along Event last weekend (though technically, official grosses for KPop Demon Hunters were never reported by Netflix). Weapons held up well last weekend, as the film declined a solid 37.0 percent to take in $15.40 million. Late summer releases that have performed well at the box office typically hold up well over Labor Day weekend, as the four-day holiday frame serves as a "last chance" for some moviegoers to catch up on popular summer releases before the end of the summer moviegoing season. Weapons could be headed for a three-day take of $12.0 million this weekend (which would represent a 22.1 percent decline from last weekend) and a four-day holiday gross of $14.8 million (which would a be a slim decrease of 3.9 percent from last weekend's three-day frame).
Disney's Freakier Friday also had a solid hold last weekend, especially since KPop Demon Hunters A Sing-Along Event served as more direct completion to Freakier Friday. Freakier Friday is coming off of a third place take of $8.90 million, which was down 37.7 percent from the previous frame. Freakier Friday should rebound a bit from last weekend with KPop Demon Hunters A Sing-Along Event no longer in the marketplace, and in general, films that appeal towards family audiences tend to hold up especially well over Labor Day weekend. Look for Freakier Friday to decline 14.6 percent from last weekend to gross $7.6 million over the three-day frame and for the film to gross $9.8 million over the four-day frame, which would represent a 10.2 percent increase over last weekend's three-day performance.
The weekend's top new release could potentially be Universal's 50th Anniversary re-issue of Jaws. The 1975 Steven Spielberg directed blockbuster is playing in 3,200 locations this weekend, is getting IMAX showtimes and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 4PM. Three years ago over Labor Day weekend in 2022, Jaws was re-issued in a much more modest 1,246 locations and went on to have respective three-day and four-day holiday grosses of $2.64 million and $3.35 million. With the significantly wider release this time around (which also includes more average showtimes per location) and this re-issue also celebrating the film's 50th Anniversary, this re-issue of Jaws is likely to perform much stronger than the 2022 re-issue did. BoxOfficeReport is predicting respective three-day and four-day grosses of $7.4 million and $9.3 million for Jaws this weekend.
Other new wide releases this weekend include Sony's Caught Stealing and Disney / Searchlight's The Roses. Caught Stealing is a crime thriller directed by Darren Aronofsky, which stars Austin Butler, Regina King and Zoë Kravitz. The Roses, a remake of 1989's The War of the Roses, is a dark comedy directed by Jay Roach, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon. Caught Stealing is playing in a wide 3,578 locations this weekend, has Thursday preview shows beginning at 4PM and has gone over well with critics. The Roses is playing in 2,700 locations this weekend, has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM and has received mixed critical reviews from critics (though they have been more so positive than negative). There appears to be a bit more interest in Caught Stealing than The Roses this weekend, and the larger location count and stronger critical reviews should also help out Caught Stealing this weekend in the comparison between the two films. BoxOfficeReport is predicting respective three-day and four-day grosses of $7.3 million and $9.0 million for Caught Stealing and respective three-day and four-day grosses of $6.3 million and $7.8 million for The Roses this weekend.
As for some of this weekend's other holdovers, Disney's The Fantastic Four: First Steps could be headed for respective three-day and four-day grosses of $5.0 million and $6.4 million (which would respectively be down 16.8 percent from last weekend and up 6.5 percent from last weekend) and Universal / DreamWorks Animation's The Bad Guys 2 could be in store for respective three-day and four-day grosses of $4.5 million and $6.0 million (which would be down 11.9 percent and up 17.5 percent from last weekend).
