Weekend Predictions Article Update:
What was looking to be a modest late summer weekend at the box office will be getting a much welcome boost from the theatrical release of Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters A Sing-Along Event. The very recent addition to the theatrical release schedule will allow fans of this year's computer animated streaming break-out hit to catch the film in theatres. KPop Demon Hunters was released on Netflix back on June 20 and since then the film has become a streaming phenomenon, staying consistently strong on Netflix throughout the summer (after being the #2 film on Netflix for six consecutive weeks, KPop Demon Hunters has now been the #1 weekly film on Netflix each of the past two weeks). The Sony Pictures Animation produced computer animated musical was directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, and features the vocal talent of Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong and Ji-young Yoo.
Although KPop Demon Hunters A Sing-Along Event will only playing for a total of two days (this Saturday and Sunday) and in roughly just under half the locations the film would be in if it were getting a traditional release, the very strong demand among fans to see the film theatrically should lead to a very strong per-location performance for KPop Demon Hunters A Sing-Along Event. KPop Demon Hunters A Sing-Along Event also looks to be playing on multiple screens at many larger theatres this weekend, which will also help the film generate a strong per-location performance. It should be noted that KPop Demon Hunters A Sing-Along Event won't be playing in theatres within the AMC Theatres chain (the largest movie theater chain in North America). That decision, along with the film not playing on Friday (or Thursday) will obviously help place limits on just how high KPop Demon Hunters A Sing-Along Event can break-out this weekend. Also of note is that it is widely expected that Netflix won't provide official box office grosses for KPop Demon Hunters A Sing-Along Event, though it is expected that there will be unofficial industry estimates for the film's performance this weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that KPop Demon Hunters A Sing-Along Event will gross an impressive $22.0 million over the film's two-day release on Saturday and Sunday.
Last weekend, Warner Bros.'s Weapons had a very solid second weekend performance by declining 43.8 percent to hold steady in first place with $24.46 million. The well-received Zach Cregger directed horror film should continue to stabilize this weekend. Weapons will be adding 181 locations this weekend (for a total of 3,631 locations) and will also be holding onto some of its IMAX showtimes. KPop Demon Hunters Sing-Along not opening until Saturday should also help allow for stronger Friday holds for Weapons and holdovers in general. Weapons, which likely passed the $100 million domestic mark today (Thursday), could decline a solid 35.8 percent this weekend for a third weekend take of $15.7 million.
The next two spots on this weekend's box office chart should be occupied by Disney's Freakier Friday and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Last weekend Freakier Friday declined 50.0 percent to place in second, while The Fantastic Four: First Steps decreased 42.8 percent to take fourth place with $9.03 million. Both films are likely to stabilize further this weekend, especially The Fantastic Four: First Steps, as the comic book based film will be holding onto a high percentage of its average showtimes per location from last weekend and should take less of a direct hit on Saturday and Sunday from KPop Demon Hunters Sing-Along than Freakier Friday likely will. Look for Freakier Friday to decrease a very respectable 39.8 percent to gross $8.6 million and for The Fantastic Four: First Steps to decline a very solid 30.2 percent to take in $6.3 million.
