After last weekend's break-out first place start of $43.50 million, Warner Bros.'s Weapons will have no problem remaining in first place at the domestic box office this weekend. In addition to last weekend's break-out performance, Weapons has been displaying good initial holding power thus far. The R-rated Zach Cregger directed horror film will be helped out this weekend by its exceptional critical reviews, strong word of mouth (the film received a very healthy A- rating on CinemaScore), by not much being expected from this weekend's new releases, from the film holding onto IMAX screens and showtimes and from adding 248 locations this weekend (for a total of 3,450 locations for the frame). Given everything that the film has going for it, Weapons could decline by just 36.8 percent this weekend to register $27.5 million in its second weekend of release. That would move Weapons just past the $90 million domestic mark.
Last weekend saw Disney's Freakier Friday debut in second place with a solid $28.58 million. Although Freakier Friday seems to be going over very well with audiences after receiving a strong A rating on CinemaScore, the comedy sequel has displayed initial front-loading on the heels of Friday's strong opening day performance. Midweek grosses for Freakier Friday have been respectable, but also not as strong as expected for a high-profile film skewing largely towards female moviegoers during the summer. With that said, Freakier Friday will still be helped out by the lack of new direct competition this weekend and Friday grosses for the film could prove to be inflated in general throughout the film's run. Look for Freakier Friday to decline a sizable, but understandable 53.5 percent to hold steady in second place this weekend with $13.3 million.
This weekend's highest profile new release is Universal's Nobody 2. The Timo Tjahjanto directed R-rated action comedy starring Bob Odenkirk, Connie Nielsen, John Ortiz and RZA is a sequel to 2021's Nobody. Nobody 2 is playing in 3,260 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM. On the average, critical reviews for Nobody 2 have been good. Back in March of 2021 when the theatrical marketplace was still in the process of recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, Nobody opened with $6.82 million and went on to gross $27.57 million domestically thanks to strong holding power and the ongoing recovery of the marketplace at the time. While the original Nobody went over well with critics and audiences alike, the film appealed to more of a niche audience and also isn't a film that audiences really seem to have been craving a sequel for. The overall slowing of vigilante action films at the box office following the release of John Wick: Chapter 4 back in March of 2023 won't help matters for Nobody 2 either this weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Nobody 2 will debut in third place this weekend with a modest $9.3 million.
After experiencing sharp declines each of the past two weekends; Disney's The Fantastic Four: First Steps should finally start to stabilize somewhat this weekend. Despite being well received, The Fantastic Four: First Steps declined 59.2 percent last weekend to gross $15.78 million (due in part to the film having lost most of its IMAX showtimes). The Fantastic Four: First Steps will still have to deal with losing a sizable percentage of regular showtimes this weekend, which will likely limit just how much the film will be able to stabilize this weekend (along with continued built-in front-loading). The Fanstastic Four: First Steps could decline a so-so 46.2 percent this weekend to place in fourth with $8.5 million.
With no new blockbusters arriving in the marketplace this weekend, holdovers in general should hold up nicely. Universal and DreamWorks Animation's The Bad Guys 2 could decline 33.9 percent to gross $7.0 million, Paramount's The Naked Gun could decrease 35.0 percent to take in $5.4 million and Warner Bros.'s Superman could decrease 33.3 percent to gross $5.3 million.
