The box office looks to be in store for a break-out performance this weekend with the release of Warner Bros.'s Weapons. The R-rated horror film was directed by Zach Cregger and stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams and Cary Christopher. Weapons represents Cregger's follow-up to 2022's Barbarian, as a director. Like Barbarian before it, Weapons has been acclaimed by critics, which has no doubt helped build up further pre-release buzz for the film. Weapons is playing in 3,202 locations this weekend, is playing on IMAX screens (the film is spiting IMAX screens with The Fantastic Four: First Steps and F1 The Movie) and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 2:17 PM. Warner Bros. has had a terrific 2025 domestically, with the studio already having experienced break-out success with fellow horror films Sinners and Final Destination Bloodlines earlier this year. Weapons looks to join the club this weekend and the film will have a strong chance of holding up well beyond this weekend, especially if Weapons goes over as well with audiences as it has with critics. As for this weekend, Weapons could debut in first place with an impressive $40.0 million (which would already nearly match the $40.84 million total domestic gross of Barbarian).
Also opening in theatres this weekend is Disney's Freakier Friday. The Nisha Ganatra directed comedy sequel to 2003's Freaky Friday reunites Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, and also stars Julia Butters and Sophia Hammons. Freakier Friday is opening in a wide 3,975 locations this weekend, has Thursday preview shows beginning at 2PM and also had select early access shows on Wednesday. On the average, critical reviews for Freakier Friday have been good, but not great. 2003's Freaky Friday (which was a remake of the 1976 version of Freaky Friday), had respective three-day weekend and five-day openings of $22.20 million and $33.10 million (that film opened on a Wednesday), before going on to gross $110.23 million domestically. While Freakier Friday likely will experience a significant drop-off in admissions from 2003's Freaky Friday, the film could potentially have a similar box office performance without taking into account 22 years of ticket price inflation. With Freakier Friday likely to skew heavily towards female moviegoers, the film will also probably be a bit more of a midweek film and could hold up well throughout August as a result. This weekend, look for Freakier Friday to debut in second place with a promising $29.0 million.
Disney's The Fantastic Four: First Steps grossed $38.70 million last weekend to remain in first place at the box office, but at the same time the comic book based film declined a very concerning 67.1 percent. Although The Fantastic Four: First Steps has gone over well with critics and audiences alike, the film's second weekend performance nonetheless continued the current trend of films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) typically experiencing sharp second weekend declines, regardless of overall reception. The Fantastic Four: First Steps has shown some signs of stabilizing during the midweek this week, but that stabilization will be halted this weekend by The Fantastic Four: First Steps losing most (but not all) of its IMAX showtimes to Weapons. The Fantastic Four: First Steps could decline a sharp 56.6 percent this weekend to place in third with $16.8 million, before potentially holding up significantly better next weekend.
Last weekend saw Universal and DreamWorks Animation's The Bad Guys 2 debut in second place with $21.996 million and Paramount's The Naked Gun follow behind in third with a start of $16.806 million. Both films have gone over well with critics and both films looks to be going over well with audiences as well, as The Bad Guys 2 received an A rating on CinemaScore, while The Naked Gun received an A- CinemaScore rating. While The Bad Guys 2 and The Naked Gun will likely both hold up well throughout August, both films should experience some initial front-loading this weekend, especially with Weapons and Freakier Friday both entering the marketplace. Look for The Bad Guys 2 to decline 50.4 percent to place in fourth with $10.9 million and for The Naked Gun to decrease 47.0 percent to follow in fifth place with $8.9 million.
As for some of this weekend's other holdovers, Warner Bros.'s Superman and Universal's Jurassic World Rebirth will both continue to have a presence at the box office. Superman could decline 40.9 percent from last weekend to place in sixth with $8.1 million and Jurassic World Rebirth could decrease by 36.1 percent to claim seventh place with $5.6 million.
On Wednesday, Angel Studios' Sketch started out with $1.96 million, which included an unspecified amount from Tuesday preview shows. Sketch, a family comedy directed by Seth Worley, stars Tony Hale, D'Arcy Carden, Bianca Belle and Kue Lawrence. Sketch, which will be playing in 2,155 locations this weekend, has gone over very well with critics. While Sketch will likely experience initial front-loading towards its midweek grosses on Wednesday and Thursday, the film's strong critical reviews could help overcome some of that initial front-loading over the weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting respective three-day opening weekend and five-day debuts of $3.8 million and $6.8 million for Sketch.
