The July box office will continue to roll this weekend with the release of Disney's The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The Fantastic Four: First Steps represents the first Fantastic Four film to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which has no doubt helped fuel the high level of anticipation for the film. The Fantastic Four: First Steps was directed by Matt Shakman and stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn and Julia Garner. The film is playing in 4,125 locations this weekend, is playing on IMAX screens and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM. In addition to being the first Fantastic Four film to be part of the MCU, The Fantastic Four: First Steps also represents the first Fantastic Four film to have gone over well with critics, as the strong critical reviews for the film are in stark contrast to the largely negative critical reviews for 2005's Fantastic Four, 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and especially 2015's Fantastic Four reboot. Even when adjusting for years of ticket price inflation, there appears to be much more opening weekend interest in The Fantastic Four: First Steps than there was for the previous three Fantastic Four films. Two weeks ago in a similar overall situation, Warner Bros.'s Superman debuted with $125.02 million. The Fantastic Four: First Steps could very well be headed for a similar debut this weekend, with potential for even more opening weekend upside. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that The Fantastic Four: First Steps will open with a fantastic $131.0 million this weekend.

While Warner Bros.'s Superman will no doubt take a hit from the arrival of The Fantastic Four: First Steps this weekend, that hit may be held in check thanks to the continued strong reception for Superman. Last weekend Superman declined 53.2 percent to hold steady in first place with $58.45 million. That represented a very good second weekend hold, especially by this summer's second weekend standards for high-profile releases. Superman has continued to stabilize during the midweek this week (on Wednesday the film was down 44 percent from the previous Wednesday), but some of that momentum will be lost by the film losing its IMAX screens to The Fantastic Four: First Steps this weekend (Superman has also been performing very well in the IMAX format). Superman could end up having a similar percentage hold as last weekend, as the film could decline 53.8 percent this weekend to gross $27.0 million, before likely stabilizing significantly next weekend.

Universal's Jurassic World Rebirth is coming off of a solid hold last weekend, in which the film declined 41.2 percent to hold steady in second place with $23.70 million. With the arrival of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, it will be difficult for Jurassic World Rebirth to hold up quite that well this weekend, but at the same time, unlike Superman, Jurassic World Rebirth won't be dealing with the loss of IMAX screens this weekend. Look for Jurassic World Rebirth to decline a respectable 46.0 percent this weekend to place in third with $12.8 million, which would move the film just past the $300 million domestic mark.

As for some of this weekend's other holdovers, Warner Bros. and Apple's F1 The Movie could decline a solid 37.2 percent to take fourth with $6.2 million, Paramount's Smurfs could decrease a respectable 47.6 percent to follow in fifth with $5.8 million and Sony's I Know What You Did Last Summer could fall by a sharp 57.7 percent to land in sixth place with $5.4 million.
